Book Young L2 learners narrative discourse

Download or read book Young L2 learners narrative discourse written by Christine Möller and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Anaphora Resolution in Children and Adults

Download or read book Anaphora Resolution in Children and Adults written by Maialen Iraola Azpiroz and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on the comprehension of null and overt subject pronouns in intrasentential anaphora contexts in Basque, a language which employs overt referential devices that fall out of the scope of what traditionally counts as third person pronouns, namely the demonstrative hura 'that' and the quasipronoun bera '(s)he (him/herself)'. Data from native adults obtained from two experimental offline tasks on the referential properties and the discourse features of null and overt pronouns set a baseline for comparison with a) the i nsights reported in descriptive grammars and with b) developmental data from 6-8-year-old child L1 and child L2.

Book The Magic of Language

Download or read book The Magic of Language written by Thomas Tinnefeld and published by htw saar. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language is magic. This magic happens when new ideas come to our minds or when we come across notions which are new to us, i.e. when we use language productively and construct our own world. The magic (in the productivity) of language works in various linguistic areas, e.g. phonetics, lexicology, phraseology, pragmatics, languages for specific purposes and multilingualism. In language teaching and learning, this magic comes into effect when language meets content, when we try to adapt our teaching to our learners’ needs or when we need to leave our comfort zone to take risks. With contributions by Lizeta Demetriou, Bessie Dendrinos, Olga Dobrunoff, Rashit Emini, Douglas Fleming, Thomas H. Goetz, Ourania Katsara, Bernd Klewitz, Katrin Menzel, Torten Piske, Lea Pöschik, Ronald Kresta, Nikolay Slavkov, Anja Steinlen, and Brikena & Gëzim Xhaferi, this edited volume features articles that cover a diversity of research findings which deal with the magic of language in various contexts and linguistic settings in Europe, America and Asia. Download or read book La Espa ola Isla de Encuentros Hispaniola Island of Encounters written by Jessica Barzen and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Research Methods for Understanding Child Second Language Development

Download or read book Research Methods for Understanding Child Second Language Development written by Yuko Goto Butler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Butler and Huang’s book is one of the first to focus on second language (L2) development research methods and techniques specifically targeted at children of primary and pre-primary years. The last decade has seen a growing number of L2 studies of children aged 4–12, a demographic with special developmental characteristics that confound research methods designed for studying adults. Written by experts from a variety of disciplines, this book covers major research methods and techniques in existing L2 development research, including observations, surveys, interviews, introspective methods, speech production methods, receptive methods, eye tracking, and brain imaging, as well as research methods specifically designed for L2 children with special educational needs. The book also discusses various age-related considerations and challenges if they are employed to young L2 learners. This will be essential reading for SLA, child development, and TESOL researchers, and students in these courses will benefit particularly from pedagogical material such as further readings and discussion questions.

Book Cantonese as a Second Language

Download or read book Cantonese as a Second Language written by John C. Wakefield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cantonese is a language from southern China that is spoken by roughly 70 million people worldwide. It is the language of Hong Kong cinema and has traditionally been the most prominent language spoken in Chinatowns around the world. People choose to learn Cantonese for a variety of social and economic reasons: because it is a heritage language that one’s relatives speak; because it is the language of one’s partner and monolingual in-laws; because it is necessary for living and working in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou, or other Cantonese-speaking communities; because it is the bridge to fully appreciating and understanding Cantonese culture; or simply because it is an irresistible challenge. Whatever the motivation, more and more people are choosing to learn Cantonese as an additional language. This book discusses many issues related to both acquiring and teaching Cantonese. If you are a learner of Cantonese, this long overdue volume is essential to understanding both the grammatical and the social issues involved with learning this notoriously difficult language. If you are a teacher, this book will be invaluable to gaining insight into your students’ motivations and needs. And finally, if you are an applied linguist, the unique aspects related to the acquisition of Cantonese offer a fascinating contribution to the literature.

Book Second Language Acquisition and the Younger Learner

Download or read book Second Language Acquisition and the Younger Learner written by Jenefer Philp and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume of work highlights the distinctiveness of child SLA through a collection of different types of empirical research specific to younger learners. Characteristics of children's cognitive, emotional, and social development distinguish their experiences from those of adult L2 learners, creating intriguing issues for SLA research, and also raising important practical questions regarding effective pedagogical techniques for learners of different ages. While child SLA is often typically thought of as simple (and often enjoyable and universally effortless), in other words, as “child's play”, the complex portraits of young second language learners which emerge in the 16 papers collected in this book invite the reader to reconsider the reality for many younger learners. Chapters by internationally renowned authors together with reports by emerging researchers describe second and foreign language learning by children ranging from pre-schoolers to young adolescents, in home and school contexts, with caregivers, peers, and teachers as interlocutors.

Book Young English Language Learners

Download or read book Young English Language Learners written by Eugene E. Garcia and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2019-07-05 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that the number of non-English speakers is on the rise in the United States. What is less well known is that the largest proportion of this population is children under the age of 5. These young English language learners (ELLs) often demonstrate achievement gaps in basic math and reading skills when they start school. How best to educate this important and growing preschool population is a pressing concern for policymakers and practitioners. The chapters in this important book provide up-to-date syntheses of the research base for young ELLs on critical topics such as demographics, development of bilingualism, cognitive and neurological benefits of bilingualism, and family relationships, as well as classroom, assessment, and teacher-preparation practices. Contributors: Linda M. Espinosa, Margaret Freedson, Claudia Galindo, Fred Genesee, Donald J. Hernandez, José E. Náñez Sr., and Flora V. Rodríguez-Brown “This is a must-have for those who are working directly or indirectly with young English language learners.” —Olivia Saracho, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland

Book Narrative Development in a Multilingual Context

Download or read book Narrative Development in a Multilingual Context written by Ludo Verhoeven and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the results of a number of empirical studies of the development of narrative construction within a multilingual context are presented and discussed. It is explored what operating principles underlie the process of narrative production in L1 and L2. Developmental relations between form and function will be studied across a broad range of functional categories, such as temporality, perspective, connectivity, and narrative coherence. Moreover, a variety of language contact situations is considered with broad variation in the typological distances between the languages in order to enable cross-linguistic comparison. The analysis of learner data in various cross-linguistic settings may thus offer new information on the role of the structural properties of unrelated languages on the process of narrative acquisition. In the present volume, an attempt is also made to find out how transfer from one language to the other is facilitated. Finally, the effects of input on narrative construction in children’s first and second language are examined in several studies.
