Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James K. Polk - Young Hickory is the biography of James K. Polk, the eleventh President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1845 to March 4, 1849. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, but mostly lived in and represented the State of Tennessee. A Democrat, Polk served as Speaker of the House (1835-1839) and Governor of Tennessee (1839-1841) prior to becoming President. When he took office on March 4, 1845, Polk, at 49, became the youngest man at the time to assume the presidency. A firm supporter of Andrew Jackson, Polk was the last "strong" pre-American Civil War President. Polk is noted for his numerous foreign policy successes. James K. Polk - Young Hickory is highly recommended for those interested in learning more about the eleventh President of the United States.

Book James K Polk

Download or read book James K Polk written by John Seigenthaler and published by Times Books. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a pivotal president who watched over our westward expansion and solidified the dream of Jacksonian democracy James K. Polk was a shrewd and decisive commander in chief, the youngest president elected to guide the still-young nation, who served as Speaker of the House and governor of Tennessee before taking office in 1845. Considered a natural successor to Andrew Jackson, "Young Hickory" miraculously revived his floundering political career by riding a wave of public sentiment in favor of annexing the Republic of Texas to the Union. Shortly after his inauguration, he settled the disputed Oregon boundary and by 1846 had declared war on Mexico in hopes of annexing California. The considerably smaller American army never lost a battle. At home, however, Polk suffered a political firestorm of antiwar attacks from many fronts. Despite his tremendous accomplishments, he left office an extremely unpopular man, on whom stress had taken such a physical toll that he died within three months of departing Washington. Fellow Tennessean John Seigenthaler traces the life of this president who, as Truman noted, "said what he intended to do and did it."

He's holed up in a hospital with both arms broken while many of his fellow soldiers are decimated in the bloody battle that takes place on D-Day at Omaha Beach. After recuperating, Jim is sent to the 30th Division-called Old Hickory-which has suffered its own losses in a devastating friendly fire incident. The athletic and fast-as-lightning nineteen-year-old tries to prove his worth on the battlefield and become accepted by his new regiment. Because of his skills and youth, the Old Hickory veterans decide he has earned the nickname of "Young Hickory." And in the midst of all the insanity, Jim finds love in the person of Lille-a delicate, beautiful Belgian girl working at a bakery in the town of Liege. But can love survive in the deepening conflict? Or will it be challenged by the harsh realities of war? This is Jim Farrell's story-his accomplishments and his failures.
