Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you have when you blend a pinch of litrpg, a touch of farming simulator, a sprinkle of epic fantasy, a whole cup of Isekai, and a dash of Home Alone? You have Arnold's life. Accidentally murdered by a cleric in another universe during a botched resurrection, Arnold, a semi-pro gamer, wakes upon an altar to find himself incarnated into the overweight body of a farmer who could have been his fatter twin. He's not the hero. He's not the villain. He's certainly not the chosen one who is there to save the world. He's a clerical error. It could be a bad joke, but apparently, it happens so often that they have a standard procedure for returning you. That standard procedure doesn't apply to Arnold. Now stuck on a new earth, in a new universe, with no way home, Arnold must use his gaming skills to figure out how to level his farmer class to 100 and gain a second class which doesn't make him want to beat his head against the wall. There is just one small problem: farmers don't gain experience from killing monsters. Like at all. Follow Arnold on his hilarious journey as he stubbornly comes to grips with his new reality and tries to change his destiny from that of your typical farmer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With humor and pathos, Forrest Pritchard recounts his ambitious and often hilarious endeavors to save his family’s seventh-generation farm in the Shenandoah Valley. Through many a trial and error, he not only saves Smith Meadows from insolvency but turns it into a leading light in the sustainable, grass-fed, organic farm-to-market community. There is nothing young Farmer Pritchard won’t try. Whether he’s selling firewood and straw, raising free-range chickens and hogs, or acquiring a flock of Barbados Blackbelly sheep, his learning curve is steep and always entertaining. Pritchard’s world crackles with colorful local characters—farm hands, butchers, market managers, customers, fellow vendors, pet goats, policemen—bringing the story to warm, communal life. His most important ally, however, is his renegade father, who initially questions his son's career choice and eschews organic foods for the generic kinds that wreak havoc on his health. Soon after his father’s death, the farm becomes a recognized success and Pritchard must make a vital decision: to continue serving the local community or answer the exploding demand for his wares with lucrative Internet sales and shipping deals. More than a charming story of honest food cultivation and farmers’ markets, Gaining Ground tugs on the heartstrings, reconnecting us to the land and the many lives that feed us.

Book Sir Long Chain Charles

  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Sir Long Chain Charles written by Clay Walker and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true no-holds barred story of one man's endurance on a Virginia chain gang and in the Virginia state penitentiary of the 1950's. The story follows the author from the crime of an eighteen year old - taking money that was owed to him - through his incarceration on a chain gang, his escape, return to prison, another chain gang and finally parole. Take a birds-eye view of the harsh realities of a chain gang camp where vicious, ignorant gun-wielding guards held the power of life or death over prisoners; and how the prisoners dealt with life there, sometimes cruelly, permanently disabling themselves by cutting their heel tendons to escape the severe non-stop work, and sometimes humorously. Follow along on a heart pounding escape, and then journey into a maximum-security prison where the rules are entirely different, and life was cheap. See what it took to survive and endure in order to return to the 'free' world. Long Chain Charlie was an integral part of the Virginia Department of Corrections and as such became known as Sir Long Chain Charles by my choosing - something to be respected for it's service. I knew the first time I stepped on board Long Chain that I was being taken to a rolling hell - the guard's terse introduction as he handcuffed me to the seat told me that. "You can try to escape if you want to. If you do try, I'll kill you. It's simple as that." I was an extremely youthful looking eighteen year old who could pass for fourteen, fresh from the mountainous backwoods with a brand-new ten year sentence, but I believed him, and couldn't help but think that this was just the tip of the iceberg, my introduction to the Virginia penal system: a cold, dark gray bus encased in bars and heavy wire mesh, taking me to a cold, dark gray penitentiary. It was going to be a long ten years. The Commonwealth of the state of Virginia was the only penal system to my knowledge that was fully self-sustaining. There were thirty-two chain gang camps, part of them black only, part of them white only, a huge state farm, each county had it's own farm, even most of the chain gang camps had them. The two I was in certainly did. Then there was the block plant, the lime plant, and the nearly twenty-four hundred convicts at 500 Spring Street, the penitentiary, were kept busy in the shops. There was the knitting mill for socks, underwear and t-shirts; the tailor shops for the uniforms and going-out clothes; the furniture shop, the tag shop, the machine shop. All the inmates were fed, clothed and maintained by their own hand. This same system would work in every penal institution today, or on the other hand, maybe it wouldn't work because today the jail birds would start screaming "We got rights ' and some facet of society would come along and say "Their rights were violated. Release them " thus releasing and creating more two-legged slugs onto the streets that society has to condone. I am proud to say that after everything I have endured in the Commonwealth of Virginia's penal system, I still emerged human.

  • Release : 2008-02-05
  • ISBN : 1429927844

Download or read book Firefly Lane written by Kristin Hannah and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2008-02-05 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . . now a #1 Netflix series! In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable. So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives. From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness. Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn't know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she'll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she'll envy her famous best friend. . . . For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test. Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it's the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It's about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you'll never forget . . . one you'll want to pass on to your best friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully unconventional love story. It’s the summer of 2008, and thirty-five-year-old Ursula Tunder, reeling from the breakup of a bad marriage, has abandoned her career as a botanist and moved home to the family farm to start a wholesale garden-plant greenhouse, and, perhaps more importantly, to care for her ailing father, Joe. Her younger brother, Bodie, now that a shoulder injury has ended his NFL career, comes home as well, to try his hand at organic farming. Their land at the edge of a prosperous college town is coveted by developers. Ursula wants to sell the farm to Camas Valley State University, which has promised to create a research facility on the land, but Bodie and his idealistic wife, Fleece, are committed to farming. Enter Nu, Ursula and Bodie’s Vietnamese-American cousin by adoption, and an up-and-coming visual artist. When Nu gets arrested after a fight with a pair of dirt bikers, Joe persuades him to take refuge at the Tunder farm. Nu gets pressed into service helping Bodie with farm chores and taking care of Joe, so Ursula seizes the opportunity to get away from the farm, accepting a temporary job surveying native plants in the Cascades. But when Joe’s health plummets and Bodie’s finances crash, Ursula abandons her summer job to return home once again. Facing bankruptcy, Ursula, Bodie, and Nu enlist a ragtag troupe of land-defenders in a festival of resistance in a last-ditch effort to save a way of life that may disappear forever.

Book The Story of Shit

  • Author : Midas Dekkers
  • Publisher : Text Publishing
  • Release : 2018-01-29
  • ISBN : 1922253766
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book The Story of Shit written by Midas Dekkers and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterful writing style that is not only unique in biology but without equal in the whole of Dutch literature. The Story of Shit shows Dekkers once again to be in possession of a golden pen.’ New Scientist We are very discreet. We disappear into a small room, perform the task, flush, wash and reappear as if nothing happened. Of course, hygiene is necessary—some faecal bacteria, if re-ingested, can cause very serious problems—and unpleasant aromas are best kept at bay. But in all this hygienic discretion have we lost touch with an integral part of ourselves—something as much a part of living as breathing, eating and sleeping? Something enriching, creative and even enjoyable. In The Story of Shit, Dutch biologist Midas Dekkers presents a personal, cultural, scientific, historical and environmental account of shit, from the digestive process and the fascinating workings of the gut, to the act of defecation and toilet etiquette. With irreverent humour and a compelling narrative style, Dekkers brings a refreshing, entertaining and illuminating perspective to a once-taboo subject. Midas Dekkers is a bestselling Dutch writer and biologist. His books include Physical Exercise, The Way of All Flesh, Dearest Pet and The Larva. Nancy Forest-Flier is a Dutch-to-English translator. She was educated in the USA and now lives in the Netherlands. ‘Dekkers is a reservoir of knowledge (and shit). Fans of his humorous, distinctly European and meandering style of prose will enjoy The Story of Shit, which includes a collection of delightful black-and-white illustrations.’ Australian ‘For those who aren’t aware: we are not our brain, we are our gut. There is always that unmistakable Midas touch: his brilliant, sharp style makes it hard to suppress a laugh or a smile.’ Medisch Contact ‘Dekkers doesn’t hold back in his brimming history...You learn a lot...So, do I recommend a book that tells how the CIA tried using transmitters disguised as tiger turds to eavesdrop on the Viet Cong? Oh...faeces, yes.’ New Zealand Listener ‘It is such a wondrous thing when a scientist can explain facts in a humorous, straightforward and thrilling fashion.’ Toowoomba Chronicle ‘[A] remarkable foray into every aspect of diet, digestion and defecation...This is a fascinating, milestone work that should run out of bookshops like shit off a hot shovel.’ GPSpeak ‘A funny but earnest investigation—part social history, biology lesson and cultural study—that takes Chaucerian delight in the subject.’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘The Story of Shit is entertaining, amusing, educational and revealing...Sitting on the toilet will never be the same’ ArtsHub ‘A fascinating, very funny look at something common to us all.’ Daily Telegraph ‘[An] utterly unique, bizarre and interesting take on this universal-yet-taboo topic...Dekkers is an enthusiastic proponent of crap.’ AU Review ‘Intestinal fortitude required. Prudes beware.’ North & South ‘Packed with humour..The Story of Shit is an enjoyable romp through culture, science, and history.’ Australian Book Review
