Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee, Sweet Tea or Lemonade & Me? By: Bobbie Hazelton It is New Year’s Eve in Natchez, Mississippi. Mattie and her two cousins, Anne and Abby, are trying to decide on their New Year’s resolutions. Their final decision: attend Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana. However, while attending one of the zany Mardi Gras parades, Mattie and her cousins become separated. As prearranged Mattie goes to one of the more popular pubs to wait for the cousins to show up. There, she meets Marc LaBlanc, a handsome rancher from Lafayette. A short time lapses and the “I do’s” between Marc and Mattie are said. Thus begins this love story: one with happiness, caring, and sharing. Then along comes trouble. Big trouble! After seeing Mattie’s husband at a Fourth of July barbecue, Mattie’s ex-sister-in-law—who was a well-known stripper at Billy Rocket’s Club for Southern Gentlemen—decides she wants Marc for her own. Trouble in paradise? Most assuredly. However, Mattie isn’t ready to give Marc up just yet. Bring it on, Lilly Sue. Or should we call you… Pepper?
Download or read book Happy Birthday Cupcake written by Terry Border and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of Peanut Butter & Cupcake comes a birthday book starring everyone's favorite dessert! What's a cupcake to do when she needs to plan her birthday party? In this hilarious, kid-friendly homage to food and birthdays, Cupcake runs through tons of ideas while her best friend, Blueberry Muffin, finds reasons why they won't work: Soup gets seasick; Donut melts in the sun; someome might get squashed during musical chairs; and Cupcake is not very good at limbo (her icing might get sliced off!). Just as Cupcake is ready to crumble, Blueberry Muffin has one last idea that just might save the day. With laugh-out-loud visual gags (like a band made up of beans--the musical fruit, of course), this book is sure to put a birthday smile on any kid's face (and on adult faces as well). Praise for Happy Birthday, Cupcake!: "As in his earlier picture book, Border's characters are skillfully crafted food items with basic wire limbs arranged in simple landscapes....Preschoolers will be delighted with the visual mayhem."--Kirkus Reviews Praise for Peanut Butter & Cupcake: "Border’s witty food comedy will lure children who are hungry for clever visual entertainment."--Publishers Weekly "[Z]any creative photographs. [A] read-aloud hit."--School Library Journal
Download or read book Let s Celebrate written by Alice A. Mendelsohn and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’ve been writing poetry for most of my life. However, way back in the day, who would ever think of recording those creations for posterity? It was about forty years ago that I began to make copies of my work, and before I knew it, I had boxes of poems in chronological order. When I retired in 2000, I thought I could keep better track of my poems if they were in alphabetical order. That was when I emptied all those old boxes and replaced the yellowed pieces of paper with my poems retyped onto nice white paper and placed neatly into a file cabinet. But I thought you might be bored meeting my friends alphabetically from A to Z, even meeting them from 1950 to present. That is a long, long time.

Download or read book Crossing Traditions written by Babacar M'Baye and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Crossing Traditions: American Popular Music in Local and Global Contexts, a wide range of scholarly contributions on the local and global significance of American popular music examines the connections between selected American blues, rock and roll, and hip-hop music and their equivalents from Senegal, Nigeria, England, India, and Mexico. Contributors show how American popular music promotes local and global awareness of such key issues as economic inequality and social marginalization while inspiring cross-cultural and interethnic influences among regional and transnational communities. Specifically, Crossing Traditions highlights the impact of American popular music on the spread of sounds, rhythms, styles, and ideas about freedom, justice, love, and sexuality among local and global communities, all of which share the same desires, hopes, and concerns despite geographic differences. Contributors look at the local contexts of Chicago blues, early rock and roll, white Christian rap, and Frank Zappa alongside the global influence of Mahalia Jackson on Senegalese blues, the transatlantic character of the British Invasion’s relationship to African American rock, and the impact of Latin house music, global hip-hop, and Bhangra in cross-cultural settings. Essays also draw on a broad range of disciplines in their analyses: American studies, popular culture studies, transnational studies, history, musicology, ethnic studies, literature and media studies, and critical theory. Crossing Traditions will appeal to a wide range of readers, including college and university professors, undergraduate and graduate students, and music scholars in general.
Download or read book Forward in the Fog written by Lori D. Fischer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lori’s musician son Joe first mentioned numbness in two of his fingers, she didn’t think much of it. But as days passed and he was hit with a crippling migraine and relentless nausea, her concern deepened. Then came a doctor’s devastating diagnosis: “Brain cancer . . . aggressive . . . inoperable . . . twelve-to-fifteen months.” Join Lori on an emotional journey through love, hope, despair, and finally open-handed surrender to the wisdom and goodness of God. Joe was strong, healthy, and athletic—a black belt in the mixed martial art Kajukenbo. He was a talented singer-songwriter with an album and several singles. He quietly loved and served those living on the streets, often stopping to chat with them and buy them lunch or a pair of shoes, sometimes literally giving the jacket off his back. Honest and vulnerable regarding her own dark emotions during a season of suffering and uncertainty, her sense of God’s absence, and her desperation to withdraw from society, Lori finds that even for a solitude-loving introvert, nurturing our most important relationships is infinitely rewarding, and that God is steadfast in his love and mercy regardless of our feelings about him.

Download or read book Hyperbole and a Half written by Allie Brosh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Download or read book If You Were Mine written by Cynthia Scott Hutchinson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Cyril of Jerusalem wrote: The dragon sits by the side of the road, watching those who pass. Beware lest he devour you. The late author Flannery OConnor suggested that no matterthe particular manifestation of the dragon, it is of this mysterious passage past him, or into his jaws, that stories of any depth will always be concerned to tell. If You Were Mine deals gently and compassionately with a very painful consequence of falling into sexual temptation from the perspective of a young womans experience. It is a love story turned tragic, as the protagonist fails to listen to her heart in her own defining moment before the dragona story told simply and sweetly, offering eventual hope, healing and release from the dragons jaws.
