Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of poems is an intriguing reflection of the sometimes torturous evolution of inner self which so many South Africans face as they struggle to find who they are in a multicultural society that espouses the values of traditional culture while reaching for the promise of a global community. Thus the blend of Xhosa and English as Ntsiki strives to merge her modern views with cultural roots. She feels strongly the need to reclaim her culture and language and blend them within the context of a cosmopolitan society. She captures the vibe and energy of young South Africa and its blossoming as well as its quandaries. Ntsiki does not hesitate to deal with controversial and painful issues, such as rape, and her work challenges the reader to stop and think, really think. The quest for self expression and self-understanding echoes throughout the book and through it, she exhorts the reader to have the courage to explore and understand himself. Underlying many poems is the unspoken but burning desire that, by telling the truth, she will create possibilities for others to do the same. In many ways, Wena is a celebration of life. The poems brim over with Ntsikis own desire to drink to the full and then go out there and pour love and life out into the world. The manner in which she distills meaning and value from the negative is perhaps best expressed in her own words, from the poem, I choose life:

Book Comprehensive Casebook of Cognitive Therapy

Download or read book Comprehensive Casebook of Cognitive Therapy written by Frank M. Dattilio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the golden age of cognitive therapy. Its popularity among society and the professional community is growing by leaps and bounds. What is it and what are its limits? What is the fundamental nature of cognitive therapy? It is, to my way of thinking, simple but profound. To understand it, it is useful to think back to the history of behavior therapy, to the basic development made by Joseph Wolpe. In the 1950s, Wolpe astounded the therapeutic world and infuriated his colleagues by finding a simple cure for phobias. The psychoanalytic establishment held that phobias-irrational and intense fear of certain objects, such as cats-were just surface manifesta tions of deeper, underlying disorders. The psychoanalysts said their source was the buried fear in male children of castration by the father in retaliation for the son's lust for his mother. For females, this fear is directed toward the opposite sex parent. The biomedical theorists, on the other hand, claimed that some as yet undiscovered disorder in brain chemistry must be the underlying problem. Both groups insisted that to treat only the patient's fear of cats would do no more good than it would to put rouge over measles. Wolpe, however, reasoned that irrational fear of something isn't just a symptom of a phobia; it is the whole phobia.

Book excerpt: The Game of Life: To Inspire, Give Hope and Strength (published by AuthorHouse), by Yana Dee, is a poetry collection that offers hope and encouragement to those in the midst of their own daily struggles. After surviving a traumatic brain injury and waking up after a coma Dee had subsequent surgeries due to shunt malfunctions, severe pain and neurological problems resulting from the high pressure hydrocephalus, Dee began writing again and found a strength in her poetry that she could never have imagined. She entered the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, where she shared her poetry with others. She soon realized, after putting tears in the eyes of her readers, that her poetry touched the soul. Throughout her hardships, Dee has chosen to not just survive, but to thrive. As she notes in the poem My Bubble: I still have the choice, To put my hands up, And surrender my soul. But I won’t let it go! As September is National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month, Dee’s heartfelt story of survival is all the more pertinent. Knowing first-hand the extreme pain associated with hydrocephalus, Dee has channeled her agony into art. Encompassing joy, fear, desperation and, ultimately, hope, Dee’s The Game of Life speaks to survivors in all walks of life.
