What happens next is an inventive romp, as the resourceful monkey attempts to grab a snack, with some hilarious consequences. Full of energy, surprise, and strong visual storytelling, this practically wordless picture book will entice even the most reluctant reader. The Monkey Goes Bananas is fast-paced, delicious fun that’s sure to leave young readers hungry for another read. Praise for The Monkey Goes Bananas "This predominantly wordless picture book delivers a substantial helping of slapstick." --Kirkus Reviews "There is a slapstick element to the humor (the monkey is flung around with some regularity), which will resonate with readers as they turn each page to see what the monkey will try next. Throw in an opportunistic shark with an empty belly, and the pieces are in place for a laugh-out-loud story that should earn plenty of repeat readings." --Booklist "Kids will jump right into this rip-roaring flip book–paced tale." --School Library Journal

Download or read book Monday with Maka written by Michael J. Naumann and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monday with Maka started as a pick-me-up weekly office email. The goal was to bring a little monkey knowledge, encouragement, and maybe a smile or two to what is normally a dreaded day (Monday...ugh). The author wanted others to experience the joy of having Maka in their lives like they've experienced themselves. After a round of layoffs occurred at work, the weekly posts continued but more in a blog format online. Maka's adoption day was in February 2008, and at the time, he weighed only one pound. The author drove four states away in a blizzard to pick him up, but in the end, it was worth it. Bonding with his new troop took a little time, but it wasn't long before Michael and his family realized that he was theirs, and they were his. So let's introduce Maka'ala (Maka), a fifteen-plus-year-old black-and-white capuchin who found his way into the Naumann's home fifteen years ago...and has yet to leave. It is said to never let a bad situation (like Mondays) bring out the worst in you--choose to be the positive person that God created you to be. This book is a summary of encouraging excerpts from the "Monday with Maka" posts--an attempt to start off each week with a smile, like a monkey with a new banana. 2

Download or read book Changing Curriculum through Stories written by Marc Levitt and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing Curriculum Through Stories: Character Education for Ages 10-12 is a book about transforming school culture from one that supports a culture of competition to one where an understanding of how we are 'All In it Together’ permeates what is studied and how. Whether the issue is ‘going along to get along’, ‘shunning an outsider’, 'bullying', ‘learning to share', 'anger management' or 'forgiveness', Changing Curriculum Through Stories: Character Education for Ages 10-12 makes clear how an individual's behavioral choices, seemingly without consequences, ultimately effect everyone, including themselves. Using original and folkloric stories as jumping off points for discussions, Marc Levitt’s new book provides a holistic antidote to 'shallow selfishness', substituting instead, a curriculum and a pedagogy that provides the intellectual and visceral tools to help students understand and to act based on an awareness of their connections to one another, the value of community and the joy of living amidst diversity of all kinds.
Download or read book Wide Open World written by John Marshall and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2015-02-10 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers of Three Cups of Tea; Eat, Pray, Love; and Wild comes the inspiring story of an ordinary American family that embarks on an extraordinary journey. Wide-Open World follows the Marshall family as they volunteer their way around the globe, living in a monkey sanctuary in Costa Rica, teaching English in rural Thailand, and caring for orphans in India. There’s a name for this kind of endeavor—voluntourism—and it might just be the future of travel. Oppressive heat, grueling bus rides, backbreaking work, and one vicious spider monkey . . . Best family vacation ever! John Marshall needed a change. His twenty-year marriage was falling apart, his seventeen-year-old son was about to leave home, and his fourteen-year-old daughter was lost in cyberspace. Desperate to get out of a rut and reconnect with his family, John dreamed of a trip around the world, a chance to leave behind, if only just for a while, routines and responsibilities. He didn’t have the money for resorts or luxury tours, but he did have an idea that would make traveling the globe more affordable and more meaningful than he’d ever imagined: The family would volunteer their time and energy to others in far-flung locales. Wide-Open World is the inspiring true story of the six months that changed the Marshall family forever. Once they’d made the pivotal decision to go, John and his wife, Traca, quit their jobs, pulled their kids out of school, and embarked on a journey that would take them far off the beaten path, and far out of their comfort zones. Here is the totally engaging, bluntly honest chronicle of the Marshalls’ life-altering adventure from Central America to East Asia. It was no fairy tale. The trip offered little rest, even less relaxation, and virtually no certainty of what was to come. But it did give the Marshalls something far more valuable: a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conquer personal fears, strengthen family bonds, and find their true selves by helping those in need. In the end, as John discovered, he and his family did not change the world. It was the world that changed them. Praise for Wide-Open World “Marshall’s use of rich details locates readers firmly in each time and place, enabling them to sense the adventure, wonder and joy he experienced in his surroundings and in watching his children grow into hardworking, more responsible teens, as well as the frustrations and disappointments he and his family inevitably encountered along the way. A great armchair adventure that should inspire others to consider voluntourism as a way to help others and see the world.”—Kirkus Reviews “Each new location combines beautiful scenery with a dose of sentiment, a good deal of humor, and some heartfelt consideration of the human condition. . . . His philosophy may not fit everyone and the ending is bittersweet, but this is an enticing call to service.”—Publishers Weekly “Wide-Open World is an adventure made up of countless small moments of human connection. It’s an armchair travelogue that may well inspire you to do good off the beaten path.”—BookPage “For anyone who has ever imagined what it would be like to pack up, unplug, pull the kids out of school, and travel around the world, this volunteer adventure is your ticket. Wide-Open World will move, engage, and inspire you, even if you never leave the couch.”—Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train

Download or read book Jamaica Kincaid written by J. Brooks Bouson and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haunted by the memories of her powerfully destructive mother, Jamaica Kincaid is a writer out of necessity. Born Elaine Potter Richardson, Kincaid grew up in the West Indies in the shadow of her deeply contemptuous and abusive mother, Annie Drew. Drawing heavily on Kincaid's many remarks on the autobiographical sources of her writings, J. Brooks Bouson investigates the ongoing construction of Kincaid's autobiographical and political identities. She focuses attention on what many critics find so enigmatic and what lies at the heart of Kincaid's fiction and nonfiction work: the "mother mystery." Bouson demonstrates, through careful readings, how Kincaid uses her writing to transform her feelings of shame into pride as she wins the praise of an admiring critical establishment and an ever-growing reading public.

This engaging tale stays with you long after the final line is read." "I couldn’t put it down! Honestly! At one point I was standing in the dining room, knew I should go to bed, but stood there reading just one more chapter ... standing up." "A one-night read for me. Started the book early and finished as the sun was coming up, so one might say my attention was captured quickly and I couldn’t put it down. Thought provoking even after I finished the book. Not your standard romance or mystery. Surprises emerge!" "Those who enjoy Alex Cross’s wonderful family and close friends in James Patterson’s series will recognize similar dynamics here. The family and friends portrayed in Ithaca’s Soldier are the best. Their emotions are genuine, their affection and loyalty absolute. Already I care about them, admire the trust they have for one another, and can’t wait to see how they support each other in the books to follow." "From the first page I was totally drawn in to this powerful story of family love and adoration of four generations. Then the incident of sheer terror scared me to death! By the end, I was streaming tears! So many emotions in a realistic setting." "Fascinating book, engaging characters, realistic dialogue, true suspense. I’m so glad this is the first in a series, because I want there to be more." "Wonderful read. I loved it. It is different from anything else I’ve read. So many twists and turns, it keeps your interest." "Really enjoyed this book. This isn’t my normal go-to for a book to read, but I could not put it down.
