Towards the end of the school-year, he enlists in the United States Air Force to serve in Security Forces. In spite of his mother's protest, Anthony leaves to basic training a month after graduation in hope of deploying to fight in the war-torn country of Iraq. This is the true story of a courageous and determined young man who serves his country while the United States is involved in a bloody and controversial war in Iraq. Anthony proudly volunteers to deploy to Iraq a few months after joining the Air Force. This first deployment does not satisfy Anthony's desire to be involved in challenging experiences. Once again, this brave, adventurous airman volunteers for a year-long deployment to the bloody city of Baghdad. This time, he proudly serves as the lead driver for his squad, which consists of four Humvees, as they patrol the dangerous streets of Baghdad. They are faced with incredible experiences during an entire year in Baghdad. Anthony and the other troops struggle to survive from the first day of their arrival. They witness hundreds of dead bodies, some missing body parts and others badly tortured or burned. The troops encounter deadly bombings, Humvees blown apart, and witness their own companions lose their lives. Anthony's fellow airmen face many sleepless nights and listen to the sounds of bombs exploding close to them on a nightly basis. After much turmoil, Anthony and many of the troops suffer from insomnia and nightmares. The need for sleeping pills begins. The troops struggle to get enough sleep and to have the energy and courage to survive another day in Baghdad. After twelve long months of working with corrupt Iraqi police and enduring the ugly conditions left from the war, this deadly mission comes to an end. Anthony returns back to his base in the United States. Unable to comprehend Anthony's unusual behavior after returning from Iraq, Anthony's mother is determined to find out what has caused her son to have such a drastic change in personality. Months later, Anthony reveals to his parents that he has post-traumatic stress disorder. This ambitious, energetic young man who loved serving his country is now faced with the devastating symptoms associated with PTSD. Worst of all, Anthony begins a long journey of using a variety of prescribed pills. He also suffers from a severe back injury, which the doctors are unable to diagnose. The Air Force places him on job restrictions, takes away his weapons, and places him in an office job. Anthony's dream is shattered. As his list of medications grows, he experiences strange hallucinations, memory loss, and other side effects. Anthony's mother does everything within her power to help her son cope with the symptoms of PTSD, his back injury, and many side effects from the pills. This is not only an intense story about Anthony, but about what our troops suffer upon returning from war.

Book excerpt: In the spectacular and corrupt city of Polit, sixteen year-old Alana Bendrece and her family live in squalor, in a walled-in ghetto aptly named Black. After having killed an attacker from outside her caste neighborhood, she is arrested, quickly tried, and then condemned. Hours later, Alana is flown in a Helicere II aircraft to a land far, far away. An island only a chosen few even know exists. A place reserved for "special cases". Blindfolded, and with her hands lashed behind her back, she is pitched out the cargo door as the aircraft approaches the island. Terrified, she falls, and falls, and falls... But death doesn’t capture young Alana, rather the cords of a vast net stretched along the shoreline of a frightening beach. What awaits her in this strange new land is at times confusing, wonderful, and yet more horrific than anything she has experienced in her life. There are people inhabiting the amazing island called "Folly"; those who live high in the massive branches of five hundred foot-tall trees, and those who dwell in a Medieval-like walled city many miles away from the mighty giants of the lush forest. Alana soon discovers that despite her rescue by a young tree dweller, someone living in one or the other—or both—of these vastly different groups on Folly wants her dead, and they will destroy the island and every person on it in order to get it done. Yet, Alana has a power. One that even she is unaware of. Her challenge will be to evade capture and torture, and in the process discover the true depths of this gift, and rescue those she has come to love.

Book excerpt: An orphaned teenager moves in with his cocktail-waitress aunt in 1950s Palm Springs, in a novel with “its full share of hilarious, and touching, moments” (Booklist). “Swinging from poignant drama to edgy satire to farce, Albert’s moving and funny first novel pairs an awkward orphaned adolescent immersed in 1950s rock ’n’ roll and an unconventional ‘kept’ woman. In 1957, confused, taciturn and fat 15-year-old Harold Abelstein, survivor of a car crash that killed his parents, goes to live with his Aunt Enid, a Palm Springs, Calif., cocktail waitress whose flowery perfumes, loud talk and constant pinching and touching make him uncomfortable. Enid’s rent and car are provided gratis by her part-time lover, incredibly self-absorbed Archie Blatt, a St. Louis garment manufacturer who pops in a few times a year to escape his invalid wife and teenage daughters. Though resenting her dependence, Enid faces a bigger problem when her manipulative, self-pitying father, Abe, who walked out on the family 25 years ago, suddenly reappears, shabby, reeking of whiskey and terminally ill. Tensions snap as Abe grows ever sicker and then Archie shows up, forcing four disparate souls to fitfully coexist under one roof. With a fine ear for dialogue, Albert perfectly captures a time and place—and the emotional chafing between family members who can't help but care for one another, despite themselves.” —Publishers Weekly
