Book Trust Me I m a Junior Doctor

Download or read book Trust Me I m a Junior Doctor written by Max Pemberton and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Very funny and frank' Independent 'Reads like Scrubs: The Blog ... funny and awful in equal measure' Observer * * * * * * * The bestselling real life story of a hapless junior doctor, based on his columns written anonymously for the Telegraph. IF YOU'RE GOING to be ill, it's best to avoid the first Wednesday in August. This is the day when junior doctors graduate to their first placements and begin to face having to put into practice what they have spent the last six years learning. Starting on the evening before he begins work as a doctor, this book charts Max Pemberton's touching and funny journey through his first year in the NHS. Progressing from youthful idealism to frank bewilderment, Max realises how little his job is about 'saving people' and how much of his time is taken up by signing forms and trying to figure out all the important things no one has explained yet -- for example, the crucial question of how to tell whether someone is dead or not. Along the way, Max and his fellow fledgling doctors grapple with the complicated questions of life, love, mental health and how on earth to make time to do your laundry. All Creatures Great and Small meets Bridget Jones's Diary, this is a humorous and accessible peek into a world which you'd normally need a medical degree to witness. If you enjoy Trust Me, I'm a (Junior) Doctor, don't miss the follow-up titles Where Does It Hurt? and The Doctor Will See You Now.

Book Trust Me I m Dr Ozzy

Download or read book Trust Me I m Dr Ozzy written by Ozzy Osbourne and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wondering if science could explain how he survived his 40-year avalanche of drugs and alcohol, Ozzy Osbourne became one of a handful of people in the world to have his entire DNA mapped in 2010. It was a highly complex, $65,000 process, but the results were conclusive: Ozzy is a genetic anomaly. The "Full Ozzy Genome" contained variants that scientists had never before encountered and the findings were presented at the prestigious TEDMED Conference in San Diego-making headlines around the world. The procedure was in part sponsored by The Sunday Times of London, which had already caused an international fururoe by appointing Ozzy Osbourne its star health advice columnist. The newpaper argued that Ozzy's mutliple near-death experiences, 40-year history of drug abuse, and extreme hypocondria qualified him more than any other for the job. The column was an overnight hit, being quickly picked up by Rolling Stone to give it a global audience of millions. In Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy, Ozzy answers reader's questions with his outrageous wit and surprising wisdom, digging deep into his past to tell the memoir-style survival stories never published before-and offer guidance that no sane human being should follow. Part humor, part memoir, and part bad advice, Trust Me, I'm Dr. Ozzy will include some of the best material from his published columns, answers to celebrities' medical questions, charts, sidebars, and more.

Book Codeswitching on the Web

  • Pages : 317 pages

Download or read book Codeswitching on the Web written by Lars Hinrichs and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a corpus of private email from Jamaican university students, this study explores the discourse functions of Jamaican Creole in computer-mediated communication. From this participant-centered perspective, it contributes to the longstanding theoretical debates in Creole studies about the 'Creole continuum'. This book will likewise be useful to researchers of computer-mediated communication, the use and development of non-standardized languages, language ecology, and code switching. The central methodological issue in this study is code switching in a written medium, a neglected area of study at the moment since most literature in code switching research is based on spoken data. The three analytical chapters present the data in a critical discussion of established and more recent theoretical approaches to code switching research. The fields of research that will benefit from this book include pragmatics and discourse analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, Creole studies, English as a world language, the study of language in computer-mediated communication, and linguistic anthropology.

Book From Subjects to Subjectivities

Download or read book From Subjects to Subjectivities written by Deborah L. Tolman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Subject to Subjectivities profiles the recent debates about the role of qualitative and participatory methods in psychology, a discipline which has traditionally seen itself as a form of positivistic science. Contributors explain how fundamentally different views of the nature of reality and of scientific theory have shaped these debates, and how psychology is being transformed through the use of these methods. At the heart of the book are 10 exemplars of interpretive and participatory action research which describe the rationale for and process of using these methods in actual cases. They also articulate some of the challenges psychologists may face in adopting them, offering insights into how these complications can be successfully negotiated. Relevant beyond psychology, the models provided can be used within the context of a wide array of social science disciplines, from sociology and anthropology to women's studies and public health. The contributors represent a veritable "who's who" of qualitative scholars, including Lyn Mikel Brown, Larry Davidson, Michelle Fine, Louise Kidder, M. Brinton Lykes, Jeanne Marecek, Abigail Stewart, and Niobe Way. No previous book has examined qualitative and participatory methods specifically within the context of psychology. From Subjects to Subjectivities provides a unique and badly needed resource for those interested in learning about the practice of these methods in the field.

Book excerpt: For Glasgow-based Gordon O'Brien, attending the Irish Galway Festival was a chance to showcase his vast musical repertoire and revisit Tuam, the old village that had nurtured a long line of past O'Briens before him. The last thing on his mind, however, was that his visit would trigger the events that would see him finally uncover the answer to the eternal problem of human existence. With old band partner, Pete, and newfound friends, Mavis and Sadie, in tow, Gordon played his way through the old and new charms of Galway. Amid all these, the Irish Republicans cast an eye on the potential of a new recruit, while the ancient enemy, the Brits, wheel about biding their time to ensnare new foes. Who will get the upper hand? The Road to Tuam, by Brian Fleming, presents a lively take on deeply held spiritual tenets, blues and folk music, and the general effects of enduring bitter political conflict in the region.

Book Donkey Baby

Download or read book Donkey Baby written by Sonia J. Song and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carried by a donkey during the People’s Liberation Army’s triumphant march to Beijing in 1948-49, a newborn at the birth of New China. Spent her formative years in an idyllic showcase boarding kindergarten, sometimes sitting on the lap of frequent visitor Ho Chi Minh. Daughter of a cabinet minister and member of the communist elite, she saw up-close the power struggles as the turbulent years unfolded: purges, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and reform attempts. Marched with Che Guevara through Tiananmen Square while in middle school. Faced a crowd of thousands calling her names during the Cultural Revolution. She was forced to watch her mother being tortured by Red Guards. Treated ailing villagers as a barefoot doctor in a commune. Swam across the Yangtze with a rifle on her back when she was a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army. Defied the commissars by folk-dancing in England when she was a government exchange student and under tight control. Trekked the roof of the world in Tibet and Nepal as a tour guide, and savored a high-altitude romance with her mountaineering French lover. Interpreted for Chinese delegations in UN and private meetings with George H. W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Ferdinand Marcos, and Pope John Paul II. Entered UC Berkeley and earned a master’s and a Ph.D. in comparative legal studies. Saw her dreams for China dashed as students in Tiananmen Square fell under gunfire in June 1989. She refused to back down when the Chinese consulate confiscated her passport for her pro-democracy activities, and stood up to a false accusation that she was a double agent. Survived a vicious frame-up and million-dollar lawsuit. She seized opportunity from adversity and founded Human Harmony ADR, the Bay Area’s first Chinese-English bilingual mediation service. Endured abortion, miscarriage, and acquaintance rape. She raised two good sons as a single mother. Her memoir intertwines intimate personal experience with major events in modern China. Unflagging in her idealism, she never stopped searching for something new to believe in after Mao. Politically active, spiritually grounded, and enjoying soul-satisfying relationships, Sonia Song now lives in Marin County, California and continues to pursue her dream of being a bridge between East and West, China and America. She offers this memoir to her hometown at the time of the Olympics in Beijing. Donkey Baby is her story.

Book Sales I M Possible

Download or read book Sales I M Possible written by Harsh Pandey and published by Apna Publish. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my 20 Plus years of sales experience, I have come across a lot of books which present a few aspect of sales and others which present some more. However since sales is a combination of hard (Funnel Management, Negotiation skills, Key Account management etc.) and soft skills (Confidence, Attitude, Behavior, Active Listening Etc.). A complete account of such skills at one place seems missing, which triggered the thought to write my experiences and understandings of Sales process from both Psychological and technical perspective. Mom! I want to become a sales person when I grow up !!, has never been any child’s dream. Even most of B schools only teach Sales as one of the subject not as a career. Lot of us actually learned tricks of trade from our experiences, colleagues, clients, peers etc. by rising and falling, “The Hard way.” This vacuum led the thought process which culminated in form of this book which presents a Comprehensive account of Hard and Soft Skills. A Lot of self-assessment tests are built in to assess where we are and where we want to be. Also it's a book not to be read but to work with. There are notes and pointers which stop us to think, assess and work on skills and aspects needed for being a successful Super Achiever. This is not a story book, it's a book which has the potential to transform a sales career provided we work along the ideas propagated to evolve us to next level.
