Book excerpt: True Story of A Human Cell A few years back, I was working long hours setting up new businesses. Although I tried to exercise regularly and ate well for the most part, my health was not where it should have been. Despite my best efforts, I still felt out of shape, drained, and run-down most of the time. To put it simply, I felt old. I wanted my youth, body, energy and vitality back- and was willing to try anything to do it. I consulted with many friends who were doctors, nutritionists, and fitness experts, but was told time and again that "age can not be reversed." Being the stubborn optimist I am, in my mind it was: challenge accepted. And so came my inspiration to prove them all wrong, which led me on an incredible journey around the world mining Eastern and Western medicine, cultures, traditions, and ancient healing practices for the secrets to a youthful life.

Book Fiction Ruined My Family

Download or read book Fiction Ruined My Family written by Jeanne Darst and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beautifully paced . . . heartbreaking and hilarious."—USA Today Augusten Burroughs meets Mary Karr: a deeply funny and wickedly entertaining family memoir. The youngest of four daughters in an old, celebrated St. Louis family-- of prominent journalists and politicians on one side, debutantes and equestrians on the other-- Jeanne Darst grew up hearing stories of past grandeur. And the message she internalized as a young girl was clear: While things might be a bit tight for us right now, it’s only temporary. Soon her father would sell the Great American Novel and reclaim the family’s former glory. The Darsts move from St. Louis to New York, and Jeanne’s father writes one novel, then another, which don’t find publishers. This, combined with her mother’s burgeoning alcoholism, lead to financial disaster and divorce. And as Jeanne becomes an adult, she is horrified to discover that she is not only a drinker like her mother, but a writer like her father. At first, and for years, she embraces both activities— and until she can stop putting drinking and writing ahead of everything else, it’s a questionable choice. Ultimately, Darst sets out to discover whether a person can have the writing without the ruin, whether it’s possible to be both sober and creative, ambitious and happy, a professional author and a parent. Filled with brilliantly flawed, idiosyncratic characters and punctuated by Darst’s irreverent eye for absurdity, Fiction Ruined My Family is a lovingly told, wickedly funny portrait of an unconventional life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis aims to explore the nature of 'power' in ICT-related CPD activities that focus on introducing and developing use of learning platform technologies in primary classrooms. I am interested to identify what makes such training activities go well, so that this knowledge can be used to ensure that the process is successful more often. In this context, success is regular use of the LP and VLE to enhance teaching and learning. Through this thesis I will present the background for my research in the context of government papers as well as published research papers. I will then discuss my research choices; namely, a poststructural paradigm, case study methodology within an action research approach, data collection by participant observation, and thematic analysis of the data analysis, supported by deconstruction. I will then present and analyse the data generated by the research. Finally, I will offer conclusions regarding the nature of power in ICT -related CPD, suggesting that knowledge is not power, and that subject leaders with expert knowledge do not have a position of power in training discourses: power rests with the head teacher and the trainees; the trainer only gains power when it is given to them by the head teacher and trainees. Please note: the names of the authority, school and participants in this study have all been changed.

Book excerpt: When eighth grader Abby Lovitt looks out at those pure-gold rolling hills, she knows there’s no place she’d rather be than her family’s ranch—even with all the hard work of tending to nine horses. But some chores are no work at all, like grooming young Jack. At eight months, his rough foal coat has shed out, leaving a smooth, rich silk, like chocolate. As for Black George, such a good horse, it turns out he’s a natural jumper. When he and Abby clear four feet easy as pie, heads start to turn at the ring—buyers’ heads—and Abby knows Daddy won’t turn down a good offer. Then a letter arrives from a private investigator, and suddenly Abby stands to lose not one horse but two. The letter states that Jack’s mare may have been sold to the Lovitts as stolen goods. A mystery unfolds, more surprising than Abby could ever expect. Will she lose her beloved Jack to his rightful owners? Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley raises horses of her own, and her affection and expertise shine through in this inviting horse novel for young readers, set in 1960s California horse country and featuring characters from The Georges and the Jewels.
