Book excerpt: East Texas Nan’s Favorite 1,000 Quotes on Inspiration, Wisdom, Humor, Texas & More By: Susan G. Davis In 1995 Susan G. Davis (Nan is what Susan’s 5 year old grandson called her) 5 year old grandson Clint gave her a journal for Christmas. He suggested “why don’t you put all of those quotes you’re collecting in that old notebook in this journal” So for 20 years Davis filled her journal. When Clint came home on leave from the Air Force and asked her about the journal, he was surprised that she had accumulated enough information to fill the entire journal! It was he who suggested she put together her collection and create this book for everyone to enjoy. Within the pages of East Texas Nan’s Favorite 1,000 Quotes on Inspiration, Wisdom, Humor, Texas & More, Davis hopes that anyone can walk away with something that will enrich their daily lives. Whether it be a ray of optimism, an answered question, inspiration when they need to be uplifted or when they need their funny bone tickled or and animal anecdote to tug at their heart strings or some Texas tidbit. This little book has something for everyone and can be read over and over.

Four Sensual Stories. Four Page Turners. Charmed By You by J. Kenner Former vigilante-for-hire Simon Barré has one steadfast rule: stay far away from celebrities. Too bad Simon’s first assignment at Stark Security is to protect A-list actress Francesca Muratti. He can’t even turn down the assignment, as that would be violating his second rule—never fail a woman. Now he finds himself up-close-and-personal with a high-maintenance diva whose flash and sass drives him crazy—but whose touch he undeniably craves. The world might believe that Francesca Muratti leads a fairy tale life, but the truth is far darker. For years, she’s kept a horrible secret about her best friend’s death. Now someone is threatening to kill Francesca if she doesn’t reveal all. The Close-Up by Kennedy Ryan I met Nazareth Armstrong when I was eighteen years old. From the beginning, my brother warned me to stay away from him. Told Naz to stay away from me. Our hearts didn’t listen. I shared one magical night under the stars with my brother's rival, thinking it was the start of a once-in-a-lifetime something. But one awful moment ended it all. Years later when we meet again, we’ve both pursued our dreams, lived a little, found success…but never found love. What began as a tiny flame when we were young now threatens to consume us. I’m more drawn to Naz than ever, but his complicated history with my brother makes whatever this could be…nearly impossible. Download or read book Making Medicines Affordable written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to remarkable advances in modern health care attributable to science, engineering, and medicine, it is now possible to cure or manage illnesses that were long deemed untreatable. At the same time, however, the United States is facing the vexing challenge of a seemingly uncontrolled rise in the cost of health care. Total medical expenditures are rapidly approaching 20 percent of the gross domestic product and are crowding out other priorities of national importance. The use of increasingly expensive prescription drugs is a significant part of this problem, making the cost of biopharmaceuticals a serious national concern with broad political implications. Especially with the highly visible and very large price increases for prescription drugs that have occurred in recent years, finding a way to make prescription medicinesâ€"and health care at largeâ€"more affordable for everyone has become a socioeconomic imperative. Affordability is a complex function of factors, including not just the prices of the drugs themselves, but also the details of an individual's insurance coverage and the number of medical conditions that an individual or family confronts. Therefore, any solution to the affordability issue will require considering all of these factors together. The current high and increasing costs of prescription drugsâ€"coupled with the broader trends in overall health care costsâ€"is unsustainable to society as a whole. Making Medicines Affordable examines patient access to affordable and effective therapies, with emphasis on drug pricing, inflation in the cost of drugs, and insurance design. This report explores structural and policy factors influencing drug pricing, drug access programs, the emerging role of comparative effectiveness assessments in payment policies, changing finances of medical practice with regard to drug costs and reimbursement, and measures to prevent drug shortages and foster continued innovation in drug development. It makes recommendations for policy actions that could address drug price trends, improve patient access to affordable and effective treatments, and encourage innovations that address significant needs in health care.

Book excerpt: Have you ever sought professional help for an emotional problem and were shocked to find yourself diagnosed as mentally ill? Are you being pressured to take psychiatric medications by a doctor who barely listens to you? If you are one of the millions of consumers of professional mental healthcare in America today, the answer to both questions is most likely yesand its just as likely the treatment isnt working. In Psychiatryland, Dr. Phillip Sinaikin teaches you why mental healthcare in America has come to be totally dominated by the so-called medical model of mental illness and how this can be dangerous to both your mental and physical health. Geared toward consumers, Sinaikin shows that psychiatry as it is practiced today is not a progressive medical science, but rather a multibillion-dollar business, run for profit by pharmaceutical companies, the insurance industry, and mainstream psychiatry. Dr. Sinaikin provides the tools to empower you and to help you learn how to take personal control of your mental healthcare and begin to make well-informed and rational decisions about the emotional well-being of yourself and the people you love.
