Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was while Neal Clark was in the gunsmith's shop that the Shelly gang attempted to hold up the bank. Neal rushed out of the shop with his rifle, took aim, and fired, repeatedly, killing Buck Shelly and his son Luke Shelly. He may also have wounded Ed Shelly, a teenage boy, who was holding the horses. Ed Shelly made good his escape, but was believed to be mortally wounded. That's what Neal thought until he received a letter from Ed Shelly, declaring that he would be back someday to settle the score. Eight years later, Neal is married with a young daughter and has taken over the town bank. Cascade City is in the midst of a crisis brought about by Ben Darley and Tuck Shelton, promoters of an irrigation project that is an obvious scam, though it isn’t obvious to most people in town or the surrounding ranching community. There is even talk of lynching Neal for his adamant rejection of investment in the project. It is at this point that the letters from Ed Shelly start coming again, this time vowing revenge not on Neal himself, but on his wife and daughter. There seems to be nothing Sheriff Joe Rolfe can do about it because there are no strangers in town except for the two promoters, both too old to be Ed Shelly… The Man from Yesterday is a gripping tale and a modern Western classic written by a Spur Award winning author. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns—books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians—are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: The essential Oregon guide for time travelers of all ages. Oregon became the 33rd state in the Union on February 14, 1859. Portland had wooden sidewalks and tamped dirt streets unlit by gaslight until a year later. To the south, gold glittered in streams; towns with names like Echo, Lookingglass, and Quartzville were springing up all over. It is a time to remember— and revisit—today, 150 years later, with this detailed and lively guide. Janice Marschner provides all you need to travel through each of Oregon's 19 original counties at the moment of statehood: a map showing each county's 1859 place names and current reference points; the history of native peoples and settlers; early roads and bridges; the first homes, schools, stores, hotels, and churches; biographical sketches of notable individuals throughout the state. Historical photographs show the determined faces of natives and settlers; their oxen and wagons on wide, rough roads; their rafts and ferries on the rivers; and their towns under development. An inspiring, close-up portrait at the moment of statehood, Oregon 1859 will light the way back for anyone who wants to see Oregon today as it was then.

Book Skookum

Download or read book Skookum written by Shannon Applegate and published by Beech Tree Paperback Book. This book was released on 1988 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Skookum' is the startlingly original narrative rendering of the experiences of a prominent westering family from 1843 to the present. The remarkable story of the Applegate family encompasses many of the predominant themes of the early American West: the overland crossing via the old Oregon Tail in 1843, the quirky restlessness of Applegate men who, after reaching the 'promised land,' permitted their travel- worn families to rest only for a while, the effects of the intermit- tent gold rushes that continued to upset family lifre long after 1849, the troubled relations between the settler and the Indian ... Shannon Applegate is interested not only in what happemned to her family, but in what it meant to them. How did it feel to be a mother witnessing the death of her child on the way to Oregon, or to be a settler's son watching his Indian friends and old playmates rounded up in the dead of winter and marched off to the reserves? What did it do to the course of a young woman's life when she learned that her father has scratched her name from the family Bible? What sort of world was it where an old blue sugar bowl filled with gold dust could be unconcernedly set out in plain sight?"--From paper dustcover.

Book excerpt: Ice on the Grapevine is a traditional mystery featuring Hunter Rayne, a retired homicide detective turned long haul truck driver. The story opens on a July morning with the discovery of a frozen corpse at a brake check just south of the Grapevine Pass in L.A. County. Hunter, who is in southern California making a delivery, is persuaded by his irascible dispatcher, Elspeth Watson, to help clear two fellow truck drivers who are arrested for the murder. His job is made more difficult by the fact that the suspects, a newlywed couple, won't speak up in their own defence. The circumstantial evidence is strong, and a rookie detective from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department is eager to score a win. The investigation crosses the Canada-U.S. border when the victim is identified as a second rate musician from Vancouver, and it turns out there were more than a few desperate people happy to see him dead, including the accused couple. Hunter has to use all his investigative skills to uncover the truth.Hunter’s ex-wife maintains that by taking to the highway Hunter is running away from his past, but he believes that the solitude of days on the road is helping him to heal from guilt over the failure of his marriage and the suicide of his best friend. His life gets more complicated when he feels an unwelcome attraction for a lawyer representing one of the accused.Tangled relationships and multiple suspects emerge throughout the novel, as Hunter butts heads with more than one officer of the law to solve the crime.

Book excerpt: This book describes the first Prindles to arrive in Clinton and Franklin Counties, NY and follows their descendants through about five generations. Ephraim Prindle, born circa 1755 arrived in Clinton County, NY by the time the 1800 Federal census was taken; and he with his six sons and one daughter farmed and raised families in that area. As the new West frontier opened up, the families migrated by rail, mostly to Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kansas, Texas and then some on to California, Oregon and Washington. Newspaper accounts of everyday life events and obituaries of their deaths are included. Hundreds of photographs of these Prindle/Prindel descendants, their homes, and headstones, along with some rare historical documents and maps have also been introduced into this book. These Prindles married into many other families during the past 250 years. Two surnames in particular stand out; the Goodwins and the Daddows. These surnames are given extra attention and are followed for a couple of generations. Personal accounts of living experiences and remembrances of some Prindle/Prindel family members are shared. Also mentioned in the book is a brief explanation of the surname Prindle; where it originated, what its meaning is and how it has changed over the years.
