Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Patanjali This book was hurriedly written as the Griffith Prize essay as early as 1914, and it is published in a great hurry on the eve of my departure for England. Had it not been for the encouragement of the Hon'ble Chief Justice Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, Kt., C.S.I., the great patron of learning, this essay would never have been published. I have tried to give here an account of the Yoga System of thought as contained in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali as interpreted by Vyasa, Vachaspati and Vijnana Bhikshu with occasional references to the views of other systems. My work "Yoga Philosophy in relation to other Indian Systems of Thought" which I hope will be published shortly by the University of Calcutta is a more advanced and comprehensive work than the present attempt. But since it may yet take some time before that book is published I do not much hesitate to publish this essay. This is my earliest attempt on Indian Philosophy and no one probably is more conscious of its defects as myself. As I had to stay far away from Calcutta at Chittagong and as I had no time in my hands owing to my departure to England, I do very much regret that I could not properly supervise the work of its printing. Many errors of printing have consequently escaped. It is however hoped that the errors may not be such that they will inconvenience the reader much. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoga has come to be an icon of Indian culture and civilization, and it is widely regarded as being timeless and unchanging. Based on extensive ethnographic research and an analysis of both ancient and modern texts, Yoga in Modern India challenges this popular view by examining the history of yoga, focusing on its emergence in modern India and its dramatically changing form and significance in the twentieth century. Joseph Alter argues that yoga's transformation into a popular activity idolized for its health value is based on modern ideas about science and medicine. Alter centers his analysis on an interpretation of the seminal work of Swami Kuvalayananda, one of the chief architects of the Yoga Renaissance in the early twentieth century. From this point of orientation he explores current interpretations of yoga and considers how practitioners of yogic medicine and fitness combine the ideas of biology, physiology, and anatomy with those of metaphysics, transcendence, and magical power. The first serious ethnographic history of modern yoga in India, this fluently written book is must reading not only for students and scholars but also practitioners who seek a deeper understanding of how yoga developed over time into the exceedingly popular phenomenon it is today.

But from at least the time of the Upanisads till Aurobindo Yoga has been an important source of inspiration to philosophy in Indian and philosophy in turn has often provided in turn has often provided an initial impetus and motivation for the practice of yoga and has produced various interpretations of Yogic experiences. It is therefore most appropriate that Yoga and Indian philosophy be given equal attention both in the context of academic research and in the framework of popularising Yoga.

Book Indian Philosophy and Yoga in Germany

Download or read book Indian Philosophy and Yoga in Germany written by Owen Ware and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the fascinating – at times dark and at times hopeful – reception of classical Yoga philosophies in Germany during the nineteenth century. When debates over God, religion, and morality were at a boiling point in Europe, Sanskrit translations of classical Indian thought became available for the first time. Almost overnight India became the centre of a major controversy concerning the origins of western religious and intellectual culture. Working forward from this controversy, this book examines how early translations of works such as the Bhagavad Gītā and the Yoga Sūtras were caught in the crossfire of another debate concerning the rise of pantheism, as a doctrine that identifies God and nature. It shows how these theological concerns shaped the image of Indian thought in the work of Schlegel, Gunderrode, Humboldt, Hegel, Schelling, and others, lasting into the nineteenth century and beyond. Furthermore, this book explores how worries about the perceived nihilism of Yoga were addressed by key voices in the early twentieth century Indian Renaissance – notably Dasgupta, Radhakrishnan, and Bhattacharyya – who defended sophisticated counterreadings of their intellectual heritage during the colonial era. Written for non-specialists, Indian Philosophy and Yoga in Germany will be of interest to students and scholars working on nineteenth-century philosophy, Indian philosophy, comparative philosophy, Hindu studies, intellectual history, and religious history.

Book Hindu Philosophy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Theos Bernard
  • Publisher : Motilal Banarsidass Publ.
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9788120813731

Download or read book Hindu Philosophy written by Theos Bernard and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of Hindu Philosophy is the exinction of sorrow and suffering by the method of knowledge that alone can free man from the bondage of ignorance. It points to a clear way of thinking which enables one to understand Reality by direct experience. In this perspective, Hindu Philosophy is an art of life and not a theory. In this book the author presents a precise and illuminating study of six systems of Indian Philosophy classified into three divisions (1) Nyaya-Vaisesika, (2) Samkhya-Yoga, (3) Mimamsa-Vedanta. The first division lays down the methodology of science and elaborates the concepts of Physics and Chemistry to show how manifestations of phenomena come into being. The second division sets forth and account of cosmic evolution on purely logical principles. The third division critically analyses the basic principles, developing them in greater detail and furnishing arguments to substantiate, as well as making incidental contribution on points of special interest. Beside presenting an account of philosophical systems of India, the author adds a study of Kashmir Saivism--a system of Ideal Monism founded by Vasugupta and based on Siva Sutras. In this context the author throws sufficient light on the traditional Tantric literature that has sufered wide criticism both from Western and Eastern scholars. The book is documented with Preface, Introduction and Glossarial Index.

This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Followers of the early "New Age" movement known as New Thought, which was wildly popular at the turn of the 20th century, were intensely interested in gleaning the fruit of all of humanity's spiritual wisdom. In this 1908 work, one of the most influential New Thought writers and editors shares with Western readers the "root-ideas" of Indian language, symbology, and philosophy that have given birth to much of the knowledge of all of humanity, casting the mysteries of the East in an easily comprehensive light. He discusses: . the Sankhya system . the Vedanta system . Patanjali's yoga system . Buddhism . Sufiism . the Vedas . and more. American writer WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862-1932) was editor of the popular magazine New Thought from 1901 to 1905, and editor of the journal Advanced Thought from 1916 to 1919. He authored dozens of New Thought books under numerous pseudonyms, some of which are likely still unknown today, including "Yogi Ramacharaka" and "Theron Q. Dumont."
