Book That Mean Old Yesterday

Download or read book That Mean Old Yesterday written by Stacey Patton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'So there I was - a twenty-one year old black female university student walking down a suburban street with a gun, no shoes and murder on my mind. I was going to kill the past. I didn't know what else to do with it' Stacey Patton today is a vibrant and impressive young woman with a promising career in journalism. Yet her childhood was a battleground of bullying, abuse and mental torture. Abandoned by her birth mother, Stacey was placed in the New Jersey foster care system and was apparently lucky to be adopted by a hardworking, God-fearing African American couple. Yet something else was going on in this immaculately kept home - punishment in terrible ways, physical, emotional and sexual. Her mother was tyrannical and her father, either so in love with or in fear of his wife, turned a blind eye to the abuse she heaped on their love-starved little girl. Stacey survived by channelling her energy into her school work and her education raised her from the shackles of her unhappy home. Drawing parallels between her own childhood and the treatment of black slaves brought to America, Stacey Patton weaves the moving story of her own painful upbringing with the shameful slave history of America.

Book Dictionary of the Ponca People

Download or read book Dictionary of the Ponca People written by Louis V. Headman and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Dictionary of the Ponca People presents approximately five thousand words and definitions used by Ponca speakers from the late nineteenth century to the present. Until relatively recently, the Ponca language had been passed down solely as part of an oral tradition in which children learned the language at home by listening to their elders. Almost every family on the southern Ponca reservation in Oklahoma spoke the language fluently until the 1940s, when English began to replace the Ponca language as children entered government boarding schools and were forced to learn English. In response to demand, Ponca language classes are now being offered to children and adults as people seek to gain knowledge of this important link to tradition and culture. The approximately five thousand words in this volume encompass the main artery of the language heard and spoken by the parents and grandparents of the Ponca Council of Elders. Additional words are included, such as those related to modern devices and technology. This dictionary has been compiled at a time when the southern Poncas are initiating a new syntactic structure to the language, as few can speak a full sentence. This dictionary is not intended to recover a cultural period or practice but rather as a reference to the spoken language of the people.

Book The Snows of Yesteryear

Download or read book The Snows of Yesteryear written by Gregor Von Rezzori and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregor von Rezzori was born in Czernowitz, a onetime provincial capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that was later to be absorbed successively into Romania, the USSR, and the Ukraine—a town that was everywhere and nowhere, with a population of astonishing diversity. Growing up after World War I and the collapse of the empire, Rezzori lived in a twilit world suspended between the formalities of the old nineteenth-century order which had shaped his aristocratic parents and the innovations, uncertainties, and raw terror of the new century. The haunted atmosphere of this dying world is beautifully rendered in the pages of The Snows of Yesteryear. The book is a series of portraits—amused, fond, sometimes appalling—of Rezzori’s family: his hysterical and histrionic mother, disappointed by marriage, destructively obsessed with her children’s health and breeding; his father, a flinty reactionary, whose only real love was hunting; his haughty older sister, fated to die before thirty; his earthy nursemaid, who introduced Rezzori to the power of storytelling and the inevitability of death; and a beloved governess, Bunchy. Telling their stories, Rezzori tells his own, holding his early life to the light like a crystal until it shines for us with a prismatic brilliance.

Sea Dreamer is about relationships, especially that of Cassie and Rana - who have been friends since they were tiny girls. When this once strong friendship begins to disintegrate Cassie tries to hold onto Rana, tries to hang on to the way things were. But in life nothing ever remains the same. Then when Cassie discovers through a school project the possibility that an ancestor who lived in the 16th century may have been a pirate, she uses it as an anchor in the now turbulent friendship. Cassie, who lives within the smell of the sea, is a sea dreamer. So strongly linked are her thoughts and moods to the sea, it's as if she was born on the ever-ebbing tide. She relates much of her inner and outer world to the spirit of the sea. With a wonderful sense of place - the wild, striking coastline of Otago, New Zealand - this novel is the perfect read for young teenage girls.

When contemplating the storyline of Pride and Prejudice, have you ever wondered how Mr. Darcy progressed from contemptuous indifference to irrepressible passion toward Eliza Bennet? Whether Mr. Wickham was truly so wicked as he was depicted to be? Why old Mr. Darcy was so fond of his steward’s son? Much is left untold in Pride and Prejudice. What cosmic influences brought Eliza Bennet and Mr. Darcy to their “final good understanding”? In The Pemberley Papers, the lives of Georgiana and Fitzwilliam Darcy and the swirling underworld of servants are brought to light. We learn in this fanciful interpretation of Pride and Prejudice how military spies, émigré French priests, midwives, music instructors, and Darcy’s dog contribute to the well-known happy ending for Austen’s most charming couple.

Book excerpt: Cooee - you are being signalled from afar and being called! The world is in crises today. Mankind is desperate - whom to turn to, who to trust? It is transparently clear that the world leaders are at loggerheads and seem more interested in disagreeing than in agreeing with each other! Local, county and national agreements are also rare sights. The flock is shepherdless and groping in the dark and are in danger of falling into a deep, smooth-walled well. We have looked to man for guidance and leadership. We thought that if our organizations became bigger, the pool of wisdom would be enlarged and that fair, sane and healthy solutions would ensue. They didnt. Bigger organizations resulted in stalemate games where vetos were used to obstruct and to protect interests. These blocs seem to creep forward at a glacial pace whilst the worlds problems are sprinting ahead and out of control. Its about time we gave God a chance! He is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. I am not talking about a regional or national god/s based on divisive religion - but the One God that is encounted within by the individual! He is the Answer. He is cooeeing us to tune-in and listen to what He has to say - our survival and our planet depends on it! 2 CHRONICLES 7:14 (Old Testament - the Holy Bible) IF my people, who are called by my name, will HUMBLE themselves and PRAY and SEEK my face and TURN FROM from their wicked ways, THEN will I HEAR from heaven and will FORGIVE their sin and HEAL their land.
