Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AEC, Bristol, Crossley, Daimler, Dennis, Leyland and others were all manufacturers of passenger vehicle chassis which could be seen throughout the country in the years following the end of World War Two. They produced a wide range of double deck and single deck buses and coaches, bodied by a considerable number of body builders. With the exception of Dennis, all those chassis makers have now disappeared, along with nearly all the body builders. In addition, most operators of this variety of vehicles are no longer in existence, being primarily absorbed into larger operations. This book can only give a small indication of the major role Steve and his Quantock Heritage fleet have played in preserving not only part of the engineering history of this country, but its effect also on social history. In practical terms he has displayed this by enabling the general public to see, enjoy, and also use vehicles of a bygone era.

Book Yesterday s Railways

Download or read book Yesterday s Railways written by Peter Herring and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many still recall when the train was their principal means of travel, whether to school or work, to visit friends and relatives, or to go on a trip away from home. Trains were not only used to transport people; they were also an essential means for daily survival, delivering the coal that heated their homes and food that sat on the dinner table. It was a time when a train journey remained an adventure, and the steam locomotive that made such a journey possible provided a source of both awe and fascination. These times are recalled in Yesterday's Railways, a fascinating book that chronicles England's complete railway history from the ground-breaking years of the 1900's to August 1968 when the engine fires were put out for the last time. Readers will learn not only about the varied cargo, routes and destinations of these historic trains, but also how they were used during times of war as necessary tools of victory for England and its allies.

Book South Yorkshire Mining Disasters

Download or read book South Yorkshire Mining Disasters written by Brian Elliot and published by Wharncliffe. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period that we now call the Industrial Revolution mining disasters wrecked the lives of thousands of South Yorkshire families and devastated entire communities. The Husker pit flooding of 1838 in which 26 young girls and boys were killed shocked Victorian society and and was a significant factor in the 1842 Report on Employment of Women and Children in Mines; but earlier, long forgotten disasters are also explored. The Barnsley area was particularly hard-hit during the middle decades of the century with major mining accidents, usually great explosions of firedamp occurring, for example, at Lundhill Colliery (189 men and boys killed); Oaks (361 fatalities, Britain’s worst pit disaster) and Swaithe Main (143 dead). Scenes of grief, mourning and remarkable heroism provided spectacular copy for Victorian newspapers and magazines such as The Illustrated London News, focusing on the very uncertain and dangerous life of the miner. Despite the importance and widespread occurrence of South Yorkshire mining disasters, which also included dreadful winding accidents and gas emissions, their story has never been told in a single volume.
