Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "We" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. "We" is a dystopian novel which is set in a dystopian future police state. D-503 lives in the One State, an urban nation constructed almost entirely of glass, which allows the secret police/spies to inform on and supervise the public more easily. The structure of the state is analogous to the prison design concept developed by Jeremy Bentham commonly referred to as the Panopticon. Furthermore, life is organized to promote maximum productive efficiency along the lines of the system advocated by the hugely influential F. W. Taylor. People march in step with each other and wear identical clothing. There is no way of referring to people save by their given numbers. Males have odd numbers prefixed by consonants; females have even numbers prefixed by vowels. Along with Jack London's The Iron Heel, We is generally considered to be the grandfather of the satirical futuristic dystopia genre. Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884-1937) was a Russian author of science fiction and political satire. Due to his use of literature to criticize Soviet society, Zamyatin has been referred to as one of the first Soviet dissidents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic reissue of a Finnish fairy tale first published in 1964 tells the story of twin pixie brothers who find their family a new home. Button and Popper tells the story of a family of pixies—mother, father, and twelve children—who live in an apple tree. They enjoy its warmth and shelter, eating apple pie all spring and summer long. But when fall comes, the leaves begin to drop and the apple tree becomes a cold and wet place to live. Twin brothers Button and Popper decide to find their family a new home, but when they trek into the city and start inquiring about an apartment with room for twelve children and their parents, people laugh in their faces or politely excuse themselves. Luck strikes when, through a most fortunate mix-up at the market, the pixies find themselves in the home of Professor Pilli. When he hears their story, he invites them to look after his house while he’s away at the South Pole. When the rest of their pixie family finds out the good news, everyone is relieved and happy again. First published in 1964, Button and Popper was written and illustrated by Oili Tanninen, one of Finland’s most celebrated illustrators and authors. Bold, on-trend, midcentury illustrations support this new translation of a classic Finnish story that’s quirky and charming in equal measure.

Book Classic Radiologic Signs

Download or read book Classic Radiologic Signs written by M.E. Mulligan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates 100 classic radiologic signs with radiograms alongside illustrative photographs for memory aids and clarification. Accompanying text explains the history and meaning of the descriptive name. The entry for "dromedary hump," for example, shows a typical x-ray of this condition with a photograph of a dromedary camel that clearly shows how the name fits the sign. Dr. Mulligan says, "In honor of the 100th anniversary of Roentgen's discovery, this book illustrates and elaborates on the history of 100 of the more classic radiologic signs. If we are to use these terms with full understanding, we must have the ability to visualize the object depicted by the term, imagine its radiographic appearance, and transfer that picture to the radiographic image before us. This book is intended to help practitioners and students of our art accomplish that task."
