Download or read book Corbett Mack written by Michael Hittman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the compelling yet disturbing story of Corbett Mack (1892-1974), an opiate addict who was a member of the Nuumuu (Numa), or Northern Paiute. The Northern Paiute are best known as the people who produced Wovoka, the Ghost Dance prophet whose revitalistic teachings swept the Indian world in the 1890s. Mack is from the generation following the collapse of the Ghost Dance religion, a generation of Nomogweta or "half-breeds" (also called "stolen children")-Paiute of mixed ancestry who were raised in an increasingly bicultural world and who fell into virtual peonage to white (often Italian) potato farmers. Around the turn of the century, the use of opium became widespread among the Paiute, adopted from equally victimized Chinese laborers with whom they worked closely in the fields. The story of Corbett Mack is an uncompromising account of a harsh and sometimes traumatic life that was typical of an entire generation of Paiute. It was a life born out of the turmoil and humiliation of an Indian boarding school, troubled by opiate addiction, bound to constant labor in the fields, yet nonetheless made meaningful through the perseverance of Paiute cultural traditions. Michael Hittman is chairman of the Anthropology and Sociology Department and a professor at Long Island University, Brooklyn. He is the author of Wovoka and the Ghost Dance: A Sourcebook and A Numa History: The Yerington Paiute Tribe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyler Lacey was riding down the cattle trail, looking for strays along the upper mountain ranges of the Flying T2 Rough Stock and Cattle Ranch. It was his job this month to be the line rider and move the cattle and strays to the lower meadows before winter set in. He was just about to ride deeper into the woods to look for more strays, when he heard the sound of a wagon coming up the narrow trail. He knew it had no business being up here on the upper range land of his familys ranch. Deciding to check it out to see what was going on, he walked his horse Biscuit down the trail to see the approaching wagon. At first glance, he was startled to see a young woman at the reins of an old small canvass-covered wagon. Calico Gunderson had made two wrong turns with her mule team on the way to her uncles Broken Arrow Ranch outside Smithville, Arizona. She found herself going up a mountain trail in the wrong direction. The trail was getting very narrow the farther along she drove, and she found she could not turn the mule team and wagon around. She halted the wagon and picked up her shotgun in self-defense when she noticed a rider coming down the cattle trail toward her.

Download or read book Corn Flower A Girl of the Great Plains written by James D. Lester and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corn Flower, an eleven-year-old Native American girl, is a member of the Kansa tribe living along the Cottonwood River in the 1820s. She is a loyal daughter to her parents White Plume and Kicking Swan. Corn Flower and her best friend Night Sparrow are in charge of each family's herd of goats. Together they sing the “Song of the Kansa,” find excitement in their simple life, and delight in the folk tales spoken by an elderly tribal storyteller. Corn Flower enjoys the thrill of adventure as she travels with her father to a nearby trading post. Once she returns home, her happiness is short-lived as a tornado sweeps toward their village with a great wind. Corn Flower saves a baby goat and barely escapes the storm. The late summer brings horrible heat and a swarm of grasshoppers. Relief finally comes when a huge thunderstorm sweeps the grasshoppers away, yet the lightening from the storm sparks a fire on the prairie. Fortunately, their village is spared, and Corn Flower returns to her hillside in the remaining days of summer to tend her goats and again sing the “Song of the Kansa” with her special friend Night Sparrow. Much like children in modern culture, Corn Flower cherishes the closeness of her family, fun with her best friend, and the endless quest for adventure.
