The dramatic movement of the poems can be analogously compared to a day in the country that opens with playful lyrics about nature and the passing seasons, then moves on, at noon, to an evocation of divine presence in time and space. Afternoon advances, and ominous rumbles are heard as dark clouds gather over a violent humanity. A prophetic warning is heard, accompanied by a sense of imminent danger. Then clouds explode and there follows, recounted in a long narrative poem, the terrifying storm of the Armenian genocide in the first quarter of the twentieth century. In the aftermath of this horror, as evening approaches, one senses the poet groping to recover meaning and hope. The day closes with an exhortation to receive grace, followed by a vivid picture-poem of the day's end, entitled "Cloud-Drama at a Stormy Evening's Close."

Book excerpt: This story begins with a short, slanderous political attack by one writer, and continues with a lengthy rebuttal by another—a self-appointed target who took it upon himself to respond in kind: in verse. Written in 1944 in response to Soviet Armenian writer Gevorg Abov's «Մենք չենք մոռացել» ("Menk chenk moratsel," "We Have Not Forgotten"), and published the following year, «Թուղթ առ Երեւան» (Tught ar Yerevan, Letter to Yerevan) made Tzarukian a prominent voice in the Armenian Diaspora almost overnight—from the Middle East to Europe and the Americas.The poem was republished more than a dozen times in various Armenian communities—including in Syria, the United States, Lebanon, and Cyprus—up until the early 1990s, and as a result became a source of inspiration for tens of thousands. Published by the 120-year-old Hairenik Press, this is the first English translation of Tzarukian's Letter to Yerevan. The translation was a collaborative effort between the former director of the ARF and First Republic of Armenia Archives and former editor of the Armenian Review Tatul Sonentz-Papazian and former editor of the Armenian Weekly Rupen Janbazian. Book excerpt: This book seeks, for the first time, to examine the demography and the social and economic conditions in the Yerevan Province during the first decade of the twentieth century, before the great changes that occurred during World War I and the seven decades of Soviet rule. Unlike in Tiflis and Baku, the Armenian inhabitants of the Yerevan Province were overwhelmingly peasants. They did not play a major role in the political, intellectual or economic life of the South Caucasus. The aim of the book is to prove conclusively that the Armenians of the Yerevan Province not only benefited from living under the umbrella of imperial security, but, as junior and senior officials, they also acquired important administrative and professional skills. The social and economic changes of the last decade of Russian rule enabled the local Armenians to advance and, following the collapse of the Russian Empire, to occupy posts previously held by Russians. Thus, despite the absence of their most talented individuals and the lack of experienced political leaders, as well as the loss of half their territory to Turkish attacks in 1918, the local Armenian administration, in the face of terrible conditions and great odds, provided the foundation which allowed the Armenian Republic to maintain its independence until December of 1920. In fact, some of the survivors would assist in the modernization and nation building of Soviet Armenia. Providing a detailed overview of the history of the Yerevan Province in the late imperial age, this book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars interested in the History of Armenia, the Russian Empire and the Caucasus.
