Book excerpt: The volume examines the effect racial stratification had on the economic and social lives of Mexican Americans and Anglo residents in a community that was majority Mexican American. The impact was felt economically as the community was a one-crop economy, and also in creating social disharmony between Mexican Americans and the politically and economically dominant Anglo community. This is an historical study since it is based on a survey conducted in 1969. It is one of only a few complete Mexican American community studies ever conducted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journalist searches for the truth behind the traditional folk song, and a free black woman’s role in the Texas Revolution. The legend of the Yellow Rose of Texas holds an indisputable place in Lone Star culture, tethered to a familiar song that has served as a Civil War marching tune, a pop chart staple, and a halftime anthem. Almost two centuries of Texas mythmaking successfully muddled fact with fable in song, and the true story of Emily D. West remains mired in dispute and unrecognizable beneath the tales that grew up around it. The complete truth may never be recovered, but in this book Lora-Marie Bernard seeks an honest account honoring the grit and determination that brought a free black woman from the abolitionist riots of Connecticut to the thick of a bloody Texas revolution. A Lone Star native who grew up immersed in the Yellow Rose legend, Bernard also traces other stories that legend has obscured, including the connection between Emily D. West and plans for a free black colony in Texas. Includes illustrations

Book Emily D West and the Yellow Rose of Texas Myth

Download or read book Emily D West and the Yellow Rose of Texas Myth written by Phillip Thomas Tucker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, the true story of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is told in full, revealing a host of new insights and perspectives on one of America's most popular stories. For generations, the Yellow Rose of Texas has been one of America's most popular western myths, growing larger over time and little resembling the truth of what happened on April 21, 1836, at the battle of San Jacinto, where a new Texas Republic won its independence. The woman who has been popularly connected to the story was an ordinary but also quite remarkable free black woman from the North, Emily D. West. This work reconstructs her experience, places it in full context and explores the evolution of a most fanciful myth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildfire is a wide-ranging, inter-disciplinary study of the "other side" of Israeli public life. Because the governmental service systems work poorly, and political protest has proved to be largely ineffective, the Israeli public has begun to take matters into their own hands, in effect creating numerous "alternative" service systems in almost all spheres of life. Lehman-Wilzig describes this phenomenon and analyzes the impact of the most important alternative systems: illegal settlement activity, a huge underground economy, pirate cable TV stations, "gray" education, Black medicine, anti-religious as well as anti-secular activity, and a growing demand for electoral reform and constitutionalization of the Israeli polity.

Book Beyond Here and Now

Download or read book Beyond Here and Now written by Barbara Davis Slotnick and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HAUNTED HOUSES ARE REAL I grew up in a wonderful, historic small town in South Carolina. Even today, I still love the history of this old town and the many friends I have come to know. In the 1980s, years later when I was grown and had children of my own, I rented an apartment in one of the historical houses that had been renovated into apartments in 1963. We were excited and felt fortunate to have found such an amazing place to live and be back in my hometown again. However, this unusual house had some interesting things happen in it while we lived there; much to my surprise. As if it were planned by some unseen being, my children and I began noticing some very unusual occurrences. My daughter was twelve years old at the time and was a cheerleader in the school she attended. Each night, she placed her cheerleading pom-poms on the corners of the bed posts of the bed, which she and I both shared. I always watched the news at night before bedtime. One winter night in 1983 around 11:15 p.m., the pom-poms began twisting like little pieces of paper as if they had an energy source from something I didnt understand. One pom-pom flew off of the bedpost and landed in the corner across the room. The next night around the same time, the other pom-pom flew off its post into the same corner. I was so shocked! I left them both lying there until my daughter had to use them again, which was the next day. The old house was huge and cold. On another winter night, my daughter and I were sleeping in the same room and the same bed as before. All of a sudden, my feet began feeling hot, so I took off my socks. I left them under the covers in case I needed them later. About thirty minutes later, the socks began moving up toward me under the cover, to the edge, and over the end of the bed. I was so scared I couldnt move! My daughter was still sleeping. Then a pair of pillows began to move across the wooden part of the foot of the bed at the end, and landed beside the socks. When this happened, I quickly awoke my daughter and we got out of that bed and that room. When I went to check the room the next morning, the socks were placed side by side and the pillows were arranged as if they were for show. At this point, I felt that I needed an outside opinion of my experiences. I then called one of the universities I was acquainted with about my experiences. They wanted to send a scientist to visit me and the house. However, my daughter was against it. They sent an engineer instead. The engineer, after much observation, informed me that I and my daughter were clairvoyant and that some form of an entity was in the house. He said that a lot of things that was going on could possibly be explained based on the history of the house, but not all of them. From time-to-time, several other unexplained incidences happened before I decided to move away from all of this. Sometimes, the telephone receiver would jump off its cradle, Christmas bulbs would swing back and forth on the tree, and water kept coming on in the bathroom when no one was present. My daughter and I had no choice but to leave this unpredictable place. Soon after, we moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. We thought we had left the past behind, however, in our new house, locks and doors would open, as well as other things that occurred. Over the years since then, things seemed to have calmed down. Even though I have been told that my daughter and I could both have psycokinesis; she denies her powers.

Book Beyond Digital

Download or read book Beyond Digital written by Paul Leinwand and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two world-renowned strategists detail the seven leadership imperatives for transforming companies in the new digital era. Digital transformation is critical. But winning in today's world requires more than digitization. It requires understanding that the nature of competitive advantage has shifted—and that being digital is not enough. In Beyond Digital, Paul Leinwand and Matt Mani from Strategy&, PwC's global strategy consulting business, take readers inside twelve companies and how they have navigated through this monumental shift: from Philips's reinvention from a broad conglomerate to a focused health technology player, to Cleveland Clinic's engagement with its broader ecosystem to improve and expand its leading patient care to more locations around the world, to Microsoft's overhaul of its global commercial business to drive customer outcomes. Other case studies include Adobe, Citigroup, Eli Lilly, Hitachi, Honeywell, Inditex, Komatsu, STC Pay, and Titan. Building on a major new body of research, the authors identify the seven imperatives that leaders must follow as the digital age continues to evolve: Reimagine your company's place in the world Embrace and create value via ecosystems Build a system of privileged insights with your customers Make your organization outcome-oriented Invert the focus of your leadership team Reinvent the social contract with your people Disrupt your own leadership approach Together, these seven imperatives comprise a playbook for how leaders can define a bolder purpose and transform their organizations.
