Download or read book Prevention of Yellow Fever in Florida and the South written by Washington Chew Van Bibber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prevention of Yellow Fever in Florida and the South: A Paper Read Before the Baltimore Academy of Medicine, December 4, 1888 Corollary. An unsanitary condition gives a chance and a half for yellow fever. A sanitary condition gives none. I know that it Is held by many physicians that a rigid quaran tine is the best preventive against yellow fever. That the disease is spread by germs is true but that it is impossible to prevent the introduction of germs from abroad by the present modes of quarantine, is fully proved by the past. In the first place it is necessary to know what places are to be quarantined against. But the germs may be brought from a place where the yellow fever Is not known to exist. To prevent panic, and the loss of trade, the first appearance of the disease is invariably kept secret, in the hope that it may be stamped out before it becomes epi demic, and thus the germs may be scattered far and wide before any warning is given.' Then the system of quarantine now in use is so onerous, that all means are tried to evade it; and if but one person passes having the germs of disease, all the labor and annoyance has been in vain. Book Report of the Board of Health of the State of Florida

Download or read book Report of the Board of Health of the State of Florida written by Florida State Board Of Health and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Board of Health of the State of Florida: For the Years 1895 and 1896 It is to be regretted that, in order to give prominence to the revenue cutter patrol system, that it should have been stated that an outbreak of yellow fever in the South was of yearly occurrence, to prevent which the patrol system was inaugurated by revenue cutters cruising at short distances and launches manned by a medical officer with ample outfit of field medical service. To seize upon yellow fever suspects ere they land on an uninhabited part of the coast, and in tent hospitals stamp out the disease. The correspondent, to have completely reached his imaginative t, Should have added, and the patients also, for yellow fever patients so treated in summer, on the coast, would most likely die. These state ments may be characterized as sensational when broadly dis seminated over the wires of the Associated Press, and have done great injury to the cause of rational sanitation, and to the interests of the State of Florida. It has frightened the public where there was no cause for fear, and although the authority for such meaningless information has, we are glad tostate, been denied at the Government Bureau, yet the impress has been felt in the State, and a sudden death or severe illness anywhere tends to an alarm, which is unreasonable, and which has not been witnessed since 1888. On account of these several alarming notices, many citizens of Florida began to think that this year was a fated one for the State, and, on account of the insurgent movement in Cuba, Florida would, of necessity, be visited by the dreaded scourge of the Antil les. The fact is that there has been less yellow fever in Havana, up to a month ago, than for several years past, and it is predicted that there will be no serious outbreaks among the Spanish troops, unless the army is recalled from the coun try to the garrisons of the sea coast. Another fact worthy of consideration, which lessens to a great degree the danger of importation of yellow fever to this country from Cuba this year, is that the insurrection has already caused a great de pression in business there, which has shown itself in a decided lessening of commercial intercourse with the United States. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF YELLOW FEVER. Description of Yellow Fever.--Man or Animals subject to Yellow Fever the only Reagents for the presence and activity of its exciting cause.--The appearance of cases in a defined locality evidence only of the cause being in operation there, but not of its nature.--Gases of Yelloiv Fever imported into a healthy locality do not communicate the Disease.--When the Disease does spread after importation, the influence of a local cause requires to be excluded before it can be shown that the Disease was communicated bythe Sick introduced.--Instances of" Isis"and "Bristol" at Sierra Leone, of "Brilliant" at Grenada, and of " Anne Marie" at St. Nazaire, examined.--Importations of YellowFever cases, alternating with outbreaks from local causes, at Military Hospital, Barbadoes.--Sesult of excluding the night air there.--Ships, and localities on land, acquire the power of exciting Yellow Fever without having received any one sick of that Disease, and even where it is not knownto bepresent.--Instances of the " Susquehanna," and" Orion," andBermuda in its various Epidemics.--Also Lisbon in 1856-57.--The potential factor seems to be diffused in a form which does not cause Yellow lever in persons exposed to it, and it is only after it undergoes further development in a foul bilge, or in a damp spot on shore, that it becomes capable of exciting that Disease. Though the literature of yellow fever be very extensive, and highly controversial, the questions discussed in it are but few, the chief being whether it be a highly contagious disease, propagated from man to man, and always imported from some locality where it was already in existence to that in which it newly appears, or, whether it be dependent on causes...

Book excerpt: "The Mosquito Wars is a fascinating chronicle of the history of mosquito control in Florida over the past century. It details the positive contributions made by the profession's many managers and scientists. This work thoroughly describes how this profession has helped make Florida habitable and also puts the environmental controversies of mosquito control in the proper perspective."--Douglas Carlson, Indian River Mosquito Control District "The Mosquito Wars is an entertaining, accurate description of how mosquito control has developed in Florida to its current state."--Dennis Moore, editor-in-chief, Wing Beats The Mosquito Wars presents a comprehensive and insightful analysis of the development of human efforts to wage war on mosquitoes in 20th-century Florida. Drawing on archival records, interviews, and published records, Gordon Patterson provides readers with a context for understanding how mosquito control has shaped the environment of contemporary Florida. Patterson reveals how the discovery that yellow fever, malaria, and dengue fever were mosquito-borne diseases had a profound impact on Florida's development in the first half of the 20th century. State agencies organized campaigns from Pensacola to Key West against the disease-bearing insects. World War II opened a new era in mosquito control; the United States Department of Agriculture pioneered the use of DDT as an insecticide, and by 1944 army and navy pilots were regularly flying anti-mosquito missions. The 1950s ushered in a new objective--to reduce not only disease-bearing mosquitoes but also pest and nuisance mosquitoes. The growing problem of chemical resistance, however, led to the use of new and more powerful pesticides, raising concerns about the environmental impact of these chemicals on biologically sensitive wetlands. The ensuing controversy resulted in the rewriting of mosquito control laws in 1986. The continuing occurrences of encephalitis and the recent arrival of the West Nile virus, both transmitted by mosquitoes, dictate that mosquito control will continue to play a vital role in protecting the public's health and welfare. The Mosquito Wars presents a balanced, entertaining, and informative examination of this often heroic and sometimes tragic history of the battle to control mosquitoes in Florida. Gordon Patterson is professor of history at the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne.

Book excerpt: "In the nineteenth century, New Orleans was stigmatized by an extremely high mortality rate . One of the major causes of this frightening annual death roll was yellow fever. The sporadic arrival of fever caused tens of thousands of citizens to flee; while at the same time, anxious neighbors in nearby towns tracked the fever's movement. The severity of yellow fever epidemics was erratic and puzzled physicians. In some years thousands of people perished; at other times only a handful died. This ghastly phenomenon appeared in the summer and remained until late autumn and marked New Orleans as a dangerous place. For decades the laymen in New Orleans determined the first frost was the sign that the fever was quickly fading, and for that reason residents hoped and prayed for this meteorological blessing" -- back cover.
