SHOW NO MERCY Gabriel Jones left his longtime career as a CIA operative and joined Black Ops, Inc., a private security and espionage firm that specializes in jobs the military and the CIA won’t touch. Now stationed in Argentina, he is known as the Archangel because of the cold steel Arc-Angel butterfly knife he keeps strapped to his hip. When American journalist Jenna McMillan innocently steps into an assassination plot Gabe is trying to foil in Buenos Aires, Gabe saves her life but is injured. And, there’s unfinished business between Gabe and Jenna—grudging professional admiration and sexual attraction—from when they brought down an Argentinian neo-Nazi months ago… TAKE NO PRISONERS Amid the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas, twenty-seven-year-old Abbie Hughes, part-time accounting student and full-time blackjack dealer in a major casino, is trying desperately to convince herself that her brother, Cory, finally has his act together. But Cory, who she’d expected back from one of his frequent trips to Honduras where he buys native crafts for resale in the states, was due back in Vegas two days ago and she hasn’t heard a word from him. She’s starting to worry. Unknown to her, Cory is a middleman in a gem-smuggling ring…and Abbie, as Cory’s sister, is now in danger... WHISPER NO LIES Las Vegas casino security expert Crystal Debrowski met sexy, heroic Johnny Reed in Honduras, where she helped him save her friend Abbie Hughes and Sam Lang (the protagonists of Take No Prisoners), but after the rescue, they went their separate ways. After Crystal spurns the advances of an older, mysterious Asian man at the casino one night, bad things start to happen. Then she remembers the man she rebuffed, Tran Hoang, who is an Asian mafia crime lord. Johnny and Crystal are soon mired in not only a steamy love affair but in a human trafficking/prostitution, arms-trading ring, and a counterfeiting scheme that could bring down the US economy.

To the best of my recollection, in nearly forty years, I had shot guns twice in my life. Returning home from a family vacation, I suddenly felt compelled to take a risk and try something completely new. So, I joined my recently retired father in playing the cowboy action game. Competing under the alias “Fret Maverick,” I was introduced to a slice of Americana I would have never known otherwise. The Cowboy Year is a quirky and beautiful, Midwest-set, father-and-son memoir. But ultimately, The Cowboy Year is a story about having the courage to tell new stories.

Download or read book Cowboy Christians written by Marie W. Dallam and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowboy Christians examines the long history of cowboy Christianity in the American West, with a focus on the present-day cowboy church movement. Based on five years of historical and sociological fieldwork in cowboy Christian communities, this book draws on interviews with leaders of cowboy churches, traveling rodeo ministries, and chaplains who serve horse racing and bull riding communities, along with the author's first-hand experiences as a participant observer. Marie W. Dallam traces cowboy Christianity from the postbellum period into the twenty-first century, looking at religious life among cowboys on the range as well as its representation in popular imagery and the media. She examines the structure, theology, and perpetuation of the modern cowboy church, and speculates on future challenges the institution may face, such as the relegation of women to subordinate participant roles at a time of increasing gender equality in the larger society. She also explores the cowboy Christian proclivity for blending the secular and the sacred in leisure environments like arenas, racetracks, and rodeos. Dallam locates the modern cowboy church as a descendant of the muscular Christianity movement, the Jesus movement, and new paradigm church methodology. Cowboy Christians establishes the religious significance of the cowboy church movement, particularly relative to twenty-first-century evangelical Protestantism, and contributes to a deeper understanding of the unique Christianity of the American West.
Download or read book We Who Work the West written by Kiara Kharpertian and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Who Work the West examines literary representations of class, labor, and space in the American West from 1885 to 2012. Moving from María Amparo Ruiz de Burton's representations of dispossessed Californio ranchers in the mid-nineteenth century to the urban grid of early twentieth-century San Francisco in Frank Norris's McTeague to working and unemployed cowboys in the contemporary novels of Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry, Kiara Kharpertian provides a panoramic look at literary renderings of both individual labor--physical, tangible, and often threatened handwork--and the epochal transformations of central institutions of a modernizing West: the farm, the ranchero, the mine, the rodeo, and the Native American reservation. The West that emerges here is both dynamic and diverse, its on-the-ground organization of work, social class, individual mobility, and collective belonging constantly mutating in direct response to historical change and the demands of the natural environment. The literary West thus becomes more than a locus of mythic nostalgia or consumer fantasy about the American past. It becomes a place where the real work of making that West, as well as the suffering and loss it often entailed, is reimagined.
Download or read book Lone Star Suburbs written by Paul J. P. Sandul and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that nearly 90 percent of the Texan population currently lives in metropolitan regions, but many Texans still embrace and promote a vision of their state’s nineteenth-century rural identity? This is one of the questions the editors and contributors to Lone Star Suburbs confront. One answer, they contend, may be the long shadow cast by a Texas myth that has served the dominant culture while marginalizing those on the fringes. Another may be the criticism suburbia has endured for undermining the very romantic individuality that the Texas myth celebrates. From the 1950s to the present, cultural critics have derided suburbs as landscapes of sameness and conformity. Only recently have historians begun to document the multidimensional industrial and ethnic aspects of suburban life as well as the development of multifamily housing, services, and leisure facilities. In Lone Star Suburbs, urban historian Paul J. P. Sandul, Texas historian M. Scott Sosebee, and ten contributors move the discussion of suburbia well beyond the stereotype of endless blocks of white middle-class neighborhoods and fill a gap in our knowledge of the Lone Star State. This collection supports the claim that Texas is not only primarily suburban but also the most representative example of this urban form in the United States. Essays consider transportation infrastructure, urban planning, and professional sports as they relate to the suburban ideal; the experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos in Texas metropolitan areas; and the environmental consequences of suburbanization in the state. Texas is no longer the bastion of rural life in the United States but now—for better or worse—represents the leading edge of suburban living. This important book offers a first step in coming to grips with that reality.
