Book Yaw Card Influence on Stability and Yaw Growth for Spin Stabilized Projectiles

Download or read book Yaw Card Influence on Stability and Yaw Growth for Spin Stabilized Projectiles written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an impulse or Dirac delta approach, the stability and growth of yaw for a spin-stabilized projectile as it transits a yaw card range is investigated. The card-induced changes in the complex yaw arm amplitudes and phases are expressed as difference equations. For a yaw card range with uniform spacings, the solutions to the general difference equations yield the magnitude and phase values for the complex yawing arms as a function of the card index number. A stepwise encounter with a yaw card reduces the epicyclical phase values across the yaw card. The parameters for the solution include encounter phase value at the entrance of the range, the characteristics of the yaw card, and the distance between the cards. Critical curves separating stable and unstable flight are presented as a function of yaw card spacing and a stability parameter that depends upon both the flight characteristics of the projectile and the card material and thickness. Quasi-universal curves of a transformed epicyclical phase encounter value versus a normalized epicyclical phase reduction value are graphically presented.

Book A Comparison Between Theory and Experiment for the Yaw Moment Induced by a Loose Internal Part

Download or read book A Comparison Between Theory and Experiment for the Yaw Moment Induced by a Loose Internal Part written by William P D'Amico (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spin stabilized projectiles often employ internal parts that are loose. Typical examples are safety mechanisms within fuzes, payload components, or submunitions. A series of tests were conducted where a loose internal part was driven by the rotor of a freely gimballed gyroscope. The motion of the loose part is not identical to that of the gyroscope and will cause the gyroscope yaw to grow. The gyroscope yaw history and the orbital motion of the loose part were measured to determine the phase angle between the motion of the loose part and the yawing motion of the gyroscope. The experimental data were used as input parameters to a theory that predicts moments (and, therefore, the yaw growth rate) induced by a loose internal part. Where the assumptions of the theory were appropriately modeled by the experiment, comparisons of theoretical and experimental yaw growth rates were consistent. Keywords: Flight stability.

Book The Effect of Yaw Cards on the Pitching and Yawing Motion of Symmetric Projectiles

Download or read book The Effect of Yaw Cards on the Pitching and Yawing Motion of Symmetric Projectiles written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an improved method for analysis of the effect of yaw cards on the determination of the pitching moment coefficient of symmetric missiles. Several comparisons of the present method axe made with spark photography range results obtained for the same projectiles, and a proper treatment of yaw-card data is shown to significantly improve the agreement between the two techniques.

Book The Effect of a Sub Caliber Cylindrical After body on the Behavior of Spin Stabilized Projectiles

Download or read book The Effect of a Sub Caliber Cylindrical After body on the Behavior of Spin Stabilized Projectiles written by L. C. MacAllister and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Range, wind tunnel, and instrumented free-flight tests have shown that a subcaliber boom at the base of a spin-stabilized projectile will produce significant changes at both small and large yaws. Almost all properties, but in particular the static and magnus moments, are affected. These aerodynamic changes, together with the inertial properties of the shell, are shown to affect both the static and the dynamic stability adversely. (Author).

Book Influence of Gravity and Applied Side Forces on the Stability of a Spinning Projectile

Download or read book Influence of Gravity and Applied Side Forces on the Stability of a Spinning Projectile written by K. H. Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The non-linear equations of motion of a spinning projectile are linearised by a method different from that traditionally used. This results in extra terms being retained, giving a more complete description of the shell behaviour and revealing some new information on stability. The resulting equations are solved as an eigenvalue problem, since this method of solution is the least tortuous and produces a good insight into the dynamic behaviour of the shell. It is found that the stability of the precessional and nutational modes is influenced by gravity and applied side forces. Results of numerical simulations which confirm these conclusions are given. (Author).

Book The Effect of Yaw Upon Aircraft Gunfire Trajectories

Download or read book The Effect of Yaw Upon Aircraft Gunfire Trajectories written by Theodore E. Sterne and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the analysis by Fowler, Gallop, Lock and Richmond of the motion of a spinning projectile, equations are derived for the computation of the trajectories, influenced by yaw, of bullets fired from moving aircraft. The equations are applicable to bullets whose processional and nutational damping rates are equal, and thus to all small arms bullets whose damping rates have been experimentally determined, as well as to 37mm shell. An algebraic formula is derived for the amount of windage jump, and procedures are described for the computation of aircraft firing tables. (Author).

Book Spin Yaw Lockin of an Elastic Finned Projectile

Download or read book Spin Yaw Lockin of an Elastic Finned Projectile written by Charles H. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersonic finned projectiles carrying very long dense metallic rods have been observed to have significantly large flexing motion. The appropriate Lagrangian for a pitching, yawing, rolling, and flexing missile is derived and the powerful finite element method used to construct differential equations for finite element parameters. These differential equations for constant spin are used to calculate frequencies and damping rates of transient motion and trim response motion to missile-fixed inertia and aerodynamic forcing terms associated with inelastic deformations. The results agree with earlier results based on a much more difficult iterative integration of a complex differential equation with unusual boundary conditions. Only three elements were necessary for reasonable accuracy, although codes for five and seven elements have been prepared and exercised. The finite element ordinary differential equations allowed calculation of the time history of missile motion with varying spin and demonstrated the occurrence of spin-yaw resonance at the aerodynamic frequency and at the lowest elastic frequency.
