Book Cataloging Collaborations and Partnerships

Download or read book Cataloging Collaborations and Partnerships written by Rebecca L. Mugridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cataloging Collaborations and Partnerships provides the reader with many examples of successful methods in which libraries have collaborated with each other to achieve common goals. Addressing a variety of cataloging and managerial challenges in national, public, academic, and international libraries and other organizations, it will be enlightening to readers who are investigating new ways of meeting their patrons’ needs. The collaborative efforts described in this book fall into a number of broad categories: cooperative cataloging and authority initiatives, cataloging partnerships, merging and migrating online catalogs, development of training and documentation, and collaborative approaches to special projects. Included are four chapters that address collaborative projects in Europe, the West Indies, the Galapagos Islands, and South Sudan. Catalogers, managers and administrators will find inspiration in these important, and in some cases, historic collaborations. They will understand how collaborations and partnerships in cataloging will help them achieve more by sharing resources and expertise, sharing the burden of new projects and initiatives, and fostering innovation and new ways of thinking. This book was published as a triple special issue of Cataloging and Classification Quarterly.

Book Transforming Acquisitions and Collection Services

Download or read book Transforming Acquisitions and Collection Services written by Michelle Flinchbaugh and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of case studies as well as useful analysis of the benefits and challenges of each. By supporting each other’s acquisitions services in a consortium, libraries leverage size to get better prices, and share systems and expertise to maximize resources while minimizing costs. Within libraries, the acquisitions function can be combined with other library functions in a unit with more than one purpose, or acquisitions can develop a close working relationship with another unit to support their work. This book surveys practice at different libraries and at different library consortia, and presents a detailed description and analysis of a variety of practices for how acquisitions units support each other within a consortium, and how they work with other library units, specifically collection management, cataloging, interlibrary loan, and the digital repository, in the form of case studies. A final section of the book covers fundamentals of collaboration.

Book Integration of Public and Technical Services Functions

Download or read book Integration of Public and Technical Services Functions written by B. J. Busch and published by Washington, D.C. : Office of Management Studies, Association of Research Libraries. This book was released on 1986 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores current trends and practices in functional integration based on site visits to six Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries selected on the basis of their responses to a Fall 1984 ARL questionnaire. The responses indicated that, for all six libraries, some integration of functions existed, staff reorganization was underway or complete, cataloging was taking place in public areas, and professional librarians were participating in both public and technical services functions. The current situation of the six libraries and their decisions to reorganize are summarized, and the following developments and issues are considered: (1) collection management and service to users; (2) impact of automation; (3) organizational climate; (4) flexible use of staff; (5) staff morale; (6) reporting relationships; and (7) recruitment and training. Increased information delivery and an expansion outward in client-centered groupings are identified as possible future trends for public service areas, along with the continuing compression of massive technical services departments, and it is concluded that leadership and staff participation, as well as a clear sense of where the institution is going, are vital ingredients in successful organizational change. Notes and a 61-item selected bibliography are provided, and a listing of the issues addressed is appended. (KM)
