A cross between a yacht and a Scottish whaler, she was the creation of James Lamont, a Scottish member of Parliament and a man of some wealth. Lamont had earlier travelled north to Spitzbergen and had published a book about his adventures there. This had fuelled his interest and he consequently commissioned the building of the Diana; designed specifically for yachting in the Arctic Seas, and resigned his hard-won seat in the House of Commons to pursue this activity. A prime example of the popular conception of a gentleman hunter and explorer, Lamont and his crew, with no particular scientific agenda in mind, voyaged to Novaya Zemlya and the Kara Sea, the Barentz Sea and Franz Josef Land and Spitzbergen. This enabled him to 'enjoy months of exciting hunts, and days and nights, never to be forgotten, in earnest contemplation of some of the grandest and most interesting phenomena of nature'. The book includes many plates taken straight from their sketches and is an engaging travelogue from one of the earliest Arctic Tourists.

An account of ice and currents to the north, northeast, and north-west of Novaya Zemlya having already been incorporated with a description of the north part of that country, to complete the knowledge of the seas between Novaya Zemlya and Spitzbergen prior to 1869, it is only necessary to mention the voyages of Hudson, William de Vlamingh, and Wood.1 To the present narrative of the first voyage of exploration in late years, in the north of this Barentz Sea, and the attempt to penetrate the Polar pack between Novaya Zemlya and Spitzbergen, an allusion to the only voyages undertaken previous to it may form an appropriate preface. All these three men sailed with the same object, to reach the North Pole, and were alike unsuccessful. Hudson sailed directly from the Thames, and met the ice in lat. 75 29', on June 9th, 1608. Failing to make any way through it, he followed the edge of the ice without finding any opening in it till he sighted Novaya Zemlya at 72 25' north. 1 Barentz sailed from Bear Island to Novaya Zemlya, but kept always south of the 75 parallel; even then they were often 'forced with great peine and labour to lauere out of the ice.' William de Vlamingh in 1664, finding the north coast of Novaya Zemlya and the Kara Sea in its vicinity almost totally free from ice, at last directed his ship to the north-west, and, it is said, reached the latitude of 82 10', where he found the water getting gradually smoother, approaching, as we now conjecture, the lee of Franz Josef Land. Again, Wood, in June 1676, came in sight of the Polar pack in lat. 75 59', having sailed through an open sea about midway between Spitzbergen and Novaya Zemlya. Examining the ice like Hudson, it conducted him in a similar...

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Arthur Herman’s How the Scots Invented the Modern World comes a narrative that charts the remarkable—yet often overlooked or misidentified—Scottish contribution to Arctic exploration The search for the Northwest Passage is filled with stories of tragedy, adventure, courage, and endurance. It was one of the great maritime challenges of the era. It was not until the 1850’s that the first one-way partial transit of the passage was made. Previous attempts had all failed, and some, like the ill-fated attempted by Sir John Franklin in 1845 ended in tragedy with the loss of the entire expedition, which was comprised of two ships and 129 men. Northern Lights reveals Scotland’s previously unsung role in the remarkable history of Arctic exploration. There was the intrepid John Ross, an eccentric hell-raiser from Stranraer and a veteran of three Arctic expeditions; his nephew, James Clark Ross, the most experienced explorer of his generation and discoverer of the Magnetic North Pole; Dr. John Richardson of Dumfries, who became an accidental cannibal and deliberate executionaer of a murderer as well as an engaging natural historian; and Orcadian John Rae, the man who first discovered evidence of Sir John Franklin and his crew’s demise. Northern Lights also pays tribute and reveals other overlooked stories in this fascinating era of history: the Scotch Irish, the whalers, and especially the Inuit, whose unparalleled knowledge of the Arctic environment was often indispensible. For anyone fascinated by Scottish history or hungry for tales of Arctic adventure, Northern Lights is a vivid new addition to the rich tradition of polar narratives.
