Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xenophon of Athens was a pupil of Socrates and a philosopher in his own right. He wrote two of the texts included in this volume, the Hiero (On Tyranny) and the Constitution of the Spartans. The third, the Constitution of the Athenians, is found under Xenophon's name alongside the other two in the manuscripts. The works represent three distinct types of government (the rule of one man in tyranny and kingship, the rule of law in the mixed constitution of the Spartans, and the rule of the masses in the Athenian democracy), but there are common features throughout. This volume presents an introduction discussing Xenophon's views on government in the context of his general political thought, drawing particularly on his Socratic work Memorabilia, and a commentary on the Greek text of each work aimed primarily at advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

Book Xenophon and the Athenian Democracy

Download or read book Xenophon and the Athenian Democracy written by Matthew R. Christ and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to understand Xenophon as an elite Athenian writing largely for an elite Athenian audience in the first half of the fourth century BC. It argues that Xenophon calls on men of his own class to set aside their assumptions of superiority based on birth or wealth and to reinvent themselves as individuals who can provide effective leadership to the democratic city and serve it as good citizens. Xenophon challenges, criticizes, and sometimes satirizes the Athenian elite, and seeks to instruct them concerning the values, knowledge, and practical skills they will need to succeed as civic leaders. Xenophon is thus best understood not as an aristocratic dinosaur who is out of place in a democratic setting, as some have assumed, but as a thoughtful and pragmatic reformist who seeks to ensure that meritorious members of the elite step forward to lead within the democracy.

Book Xenophon Ethical Principles and Historical Enquiry

Download or read book Xenophon Ethical Principles and Historical Enquiry written by Christopher Tuplin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xenophon’s personal history was exceptional for its combination of Socratic education and the exercise of military leadership in a time of crisis. His writings provide an intellectually and morally consistent response to his times and to the issue of ethical but effective leadership, and they play a special role in defining our sense of the post-Athenian-Empire Greek world. Recent Xenophontic scholarship has established the general truth of these claims. The current volume will not only reinforce them but also contribute to greater understanding of a voice that is neither simply ironic nor simply ingenuous and of a view of the world that is informed by an engagement with history.

Book Xenophon and the Graces of Power

Download or read book Xenophon and the Graces of Power written by Vincent Azoulay and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of classical Greece's most worldly and lucid writers, Xenophon across his many works gave a restless criticism of power: democratic, oligarchic and autocratic. From military campaigns (in which he took part), through the great powers of his day (Sparta, Persia, Athens) to modes of control within the household, he observed intimately and often with partisan passion. In this work a leading French Hellenist, Vincent Azoulay, analyses across Xenophon's diverse texts the techniques by which the Greek writer recommends that leaders should manipulate. Through gifts and personal allure, though mystique, dazzling appearance, exemplary behaviour, strategic absences - and occasional terror, Xenophon analyses ways in which a powerful few might triumphantly replace the erratic democracies and self-indulgent oligarchies of his day. First published in French (in 2004) to international acclaim, this book is here translated for the first time, revised and updated.

Excerpt: ... in, plundered every thing they could find, while Xenophon, standing at the gates, kept as many of the heavyarmed men as he could without; because other bodies of the enemy appeared on some eminences strongly fortified. Not long after there was a cry heard within, and the men came flying, some with what they had seized, and others also wounded. On this there was great crowding about the gates. Those who got through, being asked what the matter was, said there was a fort within, from which the enemy sallied, and wounded our men who were in the place. Xenophon hearing this, ordered Tolmides the crier to publish that all who desired to partake of the plunder should go in; many therefore prepared themselves to enter, and rushing in, drove back those who were endeavoring to get out, and shut up the enemy again within the fort. The Greeks plundered and carried off every thing they found without it; while the heavy-armed men stood to their arms, some round the palisades, and others on the road that led to the fort. Then Xenophon and the captains considered whether it were possible to take it; for in that case they secured their retreat, which otherwise would be exceeding difficult: but on consideration the fort was found to be altogether impregnable. On this they prepared for their retreat, and each of the men pulled up the palisades that were next to him; then the useless people, together with the greater part of the heavy-armed men, were sent out to get plunder; but the captains retained those in whom each of them confided. As soon as they began their retreat the enemy sallied on them in great numbers, armed with bucklers, spears, greaves, and Paphlagonian helmets; while others got on the houses on each side of the street that led to the fort, ..

Book Xenophon the Athenian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fresh study of the fourth century B.C. Greek adventurer, writer, and student of Socrates, Xenophon. An innovating author of many guises, an important source for the history of his time, a wit and a philosopher, he no longer enjoys the reputation he once did. Suggesting that such a radical de-valuation is more a reflection on nineteenth- and twentieth-century attitudes and scholarship than on the worth of Xenophon, the author in this book attempts to reassert Xenophon's rightful position by offering a close, literary-historical reading of all of Xenophon's writings and by focusing in this process on the alluring reticence and ironic subtlety many have often failed to appreciate before offering what turn out to be their too hasty criticisms. It is hoped that this study will help to bring about the realization that Xenophon, when properly read and read without preconceptions, may yet prove an invaluable guide to the development of Greek thought in general and the world of fourth-century Greece in particular. Xenophon emerges as one of the last great representatives of that civilization which reached its height in Athens, and it is in this context that he is best understood, not, as so often previously, against the Peloponnesian and especially Spartan background where he had friends and where he spent a long exile.
