This checklisttherefore will be useful to all professionals working with vegetationand for students in agriculture, botany, ecology, forestry and othersciences. Book excerpt: Although Xanthoparmelia chlorochroa was identified as the putative etiology in the death of an estimated 400-500 elk (Cervus canadensis) on the Red Rim-Daley Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) in Wyoming during the winter of 2004, there is little information regarding X. chlorochroa and the biological activity of its secondary metabolites. Based on in vivo studies, laboratory experiments and field observations, it was determined that (1) toxicity of X. chlorochroa varies by location and/or time of year, (2) (+)-usnic acid is not the toxic component of X. chlorochroa directly responsible for the syndrome observed in lichen poisoned animals, (3) ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectroscopy (UPLC-MS-MS) results show differences in the concentration of salazinic and usnic acids among lichen samples collected from locales associated with lichen poisonings, (4) mice may be useful as a research tool for identifying possible toxin(s), because they respond similarly to lichen-affected ruminants, and (5) field cases are not uncommon and urine from affected animals may be a promising diagnostic sample.
