Book X ray Diffraction Study of the Effects of Uniaxial Plastic Deformation on Residual Stress Measurements

Download or read book X ray Diffraction Study of the Effects of Uniaxial Plastic Deformation on Residual Stress Measurements written by A. L. Esquivel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uniaxial plastic deformation has been known to produce anomalies in residual stress measurements based on x-ray diffraction techniques. This study was undertaken to determine the magnitude of the effects, if any, on residual stress calculations from various materials subjected to UPD. An x-ray diffraction study using the two-exposure method was made on several iron, aluminum, and titanium alloys before and after these alloys were deformed plastically by bending on a U-bend test fixture. The x-ray peak shifts were recorded and the x-ray stress factors calculated by three different methods. These results are discussed together with observations on the additivity of residual and applied stresses, and the per cent differences in the stress measurements based on stress factors calculated by three different methods. Book X Ray Diffraction Studies on the Deformation and Fracture of Solids

Download or read book X Ray Diffraction Studies on the Deformation and Fracture of Solids written by Kazuyoshi Tanaka and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers current research findings and engineering applications of X–ray methods by the Japanese X–ray group members. The first part of the volume deals with fundamental problems in the methods for X–ray stress measurement. Phase stresses in the constituent phases of ceramic composites and ceramic-fiber reinforced metal-matrix composites are separately measured by X–rays, while three-dimensional stresses and thermal stresses in composites measured by X–rays are compared with the theoretical and numerical analyses. This work will therfore provide significant information for designing high-performance composites. Other topics covered include synchrotron X–ray radiation and the analysis of X–ray data by the Guassian curve method. Part two is devoted to the application of X–ray diffraction methods for various engineering purposes, the residual stress and half-value breadth (the full width at half the maximum) of the diffraction profiles being the two main X–ray parameters utilized in those applications. Chapters are included on X–ray fractography, a powerful technique for failure analysis, which is applied to the brittle fracture of ceramics and to the fatigue fracture of steels under various service conditions.

Book Investigations and Applications of Severe Plastic Deformation

Download or read book Investigations and Applications of Severe Plastic Deformation written by Terry C. Lowe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material processing techniques that employ severe plastic deformation have evolved over the past decade, producing metals, alloys and composites having extraordinary properties. Variants of SPD methods are now capable of creating monolithic materials with submicron and nanocrystalline grain sizes. The resulting novel properties of these materials has led to a growing scientific and commercial interest in them. They offer the promise of bulk nanocrystalline materials for structural; applications, including nanocomposites of lightweight alloys with unprecedented strength. These materials may also enable the use of alternative metal shaping processes, such as high strain rate superplastic forming. Prospective applications for medical, automotive, aerospace and other industries are already under development.

Book Non destructive Quantification of Plastic Deformation in Steel

Download or read book Non destructive Quantification of Plastic Deformation in Steel written by Shannon P. Farrell and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of an alloy, such as steel, reveals, among other properties (ex., phase composition, crystal structure), information about the strain state, crystallite (domain) size and dislocation density. While well-established non-destructive methods are available to quantify elastic strain (and residual stress); dislocation density has proven to be a particularly elusive quantity to evaluate non-destructively. Dislocation density provides important information about the state of a material and the extent to which it was deformed. This has a strong influence on the mechanical behaviour of a material during and after deformation. The goal of this work is to examine the underpinning science behind XRD peak broadening analysis and develop a methodology for evaluating plastic deformation in ferromagnetic steel alloys. An overview of the principles of XRD, how the crystallographic structure of steel accommodates stress and how X-rays interact with steel structures are documented. A historical perspective on XRD peak broadening analysis is provided. Two approaches, the modified Williamson-Hall and Warren-Averbach, have been identified to enable quantification of dislocation density and crystallite size. Both approaches that account for strain anisotropy are believed to offer the best potential for success.

Book Diffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials

Download or read book Diffraction Analysis of the Microstructure of Materials written by Eric J. Mittemeijer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview of diffraction methods applied to the analysis of the microstructure of materials. Since crystallite size and the presence of lattice defects have a decisive influence on the properties of many engineering materials, information about this microstructure is of vital importance in developing and assessing materials for practical applications. The most powerful and usually non-destructive evaluation techniques available are X-ray and neutron diffraction. The book details, among other things, diffraction-line broadening methods for determining crystallite size and atomic-scale strain due, e.g. to dislocations, and methods for the analysis of residual (macroscale) stress. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and supplies readers sufficient information to apply the methods themselves.

Book Electron Backscatter Diffraction in Materials Science

Download or read book Electron Backscatter Diffraction in Materials Science written by Adam J. Schwartz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystallographic texture or preferred orientation has long been known to strongly influence material properties. Historically, the means of obtaining such texture data has been though the use of x-ray or neutron diffraction for bulk texture measurements, or transmission electron microscopy or electron channeling for local crystallographic information. In recent years, we have seen the emergence of a new characterization technique for probing the microtexture of materials. This advance has come about primarily through the automated indexing of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns. The first commercially available system was introduced in 1994, and since then of sales worldwide has been dramatic. This has accompanied widening the growth applicability in materials scienceproblems such as microtexture, phase identification, grain boundary character distribution, deformation microstructures, etc. and is evidence that this technique can, in some cases, replace more time-consuming transmission electron microscope (TEM) or x-ray diffraction investigations. The benefits lie in the fact that the spatial resolution on new field emission scanning electron microscopes (SEM) can approach 50 nm, but spatial extent can be as large a centimeter or greater with a computer controlled stage and montagingofthe images. Additional benefits include the relative ease and low costofattaching EBSD hardware to new or existing SEMs. Electron backscatter diffraction is also known as backscatter Kikuchi diffraction (BKD), or electron backscatter pattern technique (EBSP). Commercial names for the automation include Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIMTM) and Automated Crystal Orientation Mapping (ACOM).
