Download or read book The Chinese Short Story written by Patrick Hanan and published by Harvard Univ Asia Center. This book was released on 1973 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the centuries of its popularity, early Chinese vernacular fiction was never adequately preserved or even documented. The great popular appeal of the short stories saved them from oblivion, but it was only in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that they were first collected and published. Mr. Hanan's erudite study is the first thorough attempt to uncover the history of the Chinese short story. Using a variety of techniques, but principally that of stylistic analysis, the author solves the fundamental problem of dating the stories in terms of periods. He is able to place each story in one of three broad categories, early (ca. 1250-1450), middle (ca. 1400-1575), and late (ca. 1550-1627), and to assign some of them to the earlier or later part of the time span. In many cases he offers evidence of sources and influences, place of origin, and possible or probable authorship. On the basis of the author's research, it is possible to see in minutely researched detail how the short story developed in China, what kind of men composed it, its relationship to other kinds of literature, and the main social preoccupations with which it deals. The results of Mr. Hanan's study are vitally important to all scholars of Chinese literature. Historians and linguists will also find it valuable as a model of the innovative use of stylistic analysis.

Download or read book The Age of Beloveds written by Walter G. Andrews and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Beloveds offers a rich introduction to early modern Ottoman culture through a study of its beautiful lyric love poetry. At the same time, it suggests provocative cross-cultural parallels in the sociology and spirituality of love in Europe—from Istanbul to London—during the long sixteenth century. Walter G. Andrews and Mehmet Kalpakli provide a generous sampling of translations of Ottoman poems, many of which have never appeared in English, along with informative and inspired close readings. The authors explain that the flourishing of Ottoman power and culture during the “Turkish Renaissance” manifested itself, to some degree, as an “age of beloveds,” in which young men became the focal points for the desire and attention of powerful officeholders and artists as well as the inspiration for a rich literature of love. The authors show that the “age of beloveds” was not just an Ottoman, eastern European, or Islamic phenomenon. It extended into western Europe as well, pervading the cultures of Venice, Florence, Rome, and London during the same period. Andrews and Kalpakli contend that in an age dominated by absolute rulers and troubled by war, cultural change, and religious upheaval, the attachments of dependent courtiers and the longings of anxious commoners aroused an intense interest in love and the beloved. The Age of Beloveds reveals new commonalities in the cultural history of two worlds long seen as radically different.

Download or read book Offensive to a Reasonable Adult written by Robert Cetti and published by Robert Cettl. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly researched and fully APA referenced chronological history of film censorship and classification in Australia. Case by case histories of banned films punctuate a detailed account of the evolution of the Australian Film Classification system and the concurrent development of the Australian adult XXX industry, culminating in the establishment of the Australian Sex Party. Former SAR Research Fellow at Australia’s National Film & Sound Archive Robert Cettl gained exclusive access to both the national collection and the highly restricted Australian adult industry archive, the Eros Collection, at the Flinders University of South Australia Library to piece together the complete history of film censorship in Australia. Progressing through individual banned and censored films – including works by such internationally renowned directors as Hitchcock, Whale, Bunuel, Forman, Godard, Oshima, Pasolini, Hopper, Lyne, Breillat, Noe, Brass, Bertolucci, Fellini, Ford, Clark, Despentes, Winterbottom, Von Trier – Cettl maps out the specification of “offensive” material in parallel to the emergence of Australia’s adult XXX industry and the Christian morals-driven pressure groups that advocate tighter censorship restrictions. In a country that has the dubious honor of being the most censorial of Western democracies, film censorship is based on the principle of “offense to a reasonable adult”, an undefined refrain that religious minorities have used to manipulate censorship decisions in their favor. The history of these groups and the political support for their right-wing Christian agenda – driven by what Australians term “Wowserism” – makes Australian film censorship unique in its delineation of :the “aesthetics of offense” as grounds for the suppression of free dissemination, to the point of seeking mandatory ISP Internet filtering and Internet blacklisting of all material classified RC (or “refused classification”), much of which is available for dissemination throughout Europe and the USA, in violation of UN Human Rights Article 19. In this comprehensive study of the socio-political ideology surrounding the censorship of primarily sexually explicit material (“pornography”), Cettl delineates the aesthetic construction of “offense” as a transgressive genre and charts the morality-driven religiosity behind their construction as Other to a civilized society, questioning whether the categorization of such material as other makes of it legitimate discourse. With extensive case histories, never-before-published government censorship reports, press clippings and secret internal memos between some of Australia’s most powerful and influential politicians, Offensive to a Reasonable Adult exposes the quagmire of Australian censorship law and the morals-cabal of “wowsers” that dominate the censorship agenda in the so-called “Clever Country”.
