Book The Nihilism of Thomas Bernhard

Download or read book The Nihilism of Thomas Bernhard written by Martin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the nihilistic basis of Bernhard's writing, and traces developments in the author's nihilistic stance throughout his career. In the first period of his prose fiction (1963-1975), nihilism is reluctantly accepted by Bernhard's fictional characters as a necessary response to a world perceived as meaningless. Various possible sources of transcendence are explored, and rejected. The autobiographical texts (1975-1982) then represent a sustained attempt by the author himself to transcend his own essentially nihilistic state. The apparent success of this attempt is quickly revealed to be illusory in the prose fiction of the second period (1978-1986), and it becomes apparent that nihilism is a no less necessary response to Austrian social reality than to the (more purely) personal problems which first motivated Bernhard's writing.

  • Author : Ashley Curtis
  • Publisher : Kommode Verlag
  • Release : 2021-10-01
  • ISBN : 3905574918
  • Pages : 95 pages

Download or read book Error and Loss written by Ashley Curtis and published by Kommode Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Error and Loss digs out and exposes a fundamental assumption deeply buried both in common thought and in materialist philosophy: that reason transcends its evolutionary pedigree, allowing us to speak coherently of a reality divorced from all experience. As we have moved from a religious to a scientific explanation of our cosmos this error has led directly to a terrible loss—the disenchantment that pervades our age. Yet when we dare to stare the error in the face all variants of materialism self-destruct, and the world we live in, the world of trees and rocks and stars and animals and other human beings, receives its once unquestioned magic back. Error and Loss is a philosophical work of play and parable and paradox, a detective story that uncovers what has deadened our connection to our universe, then offers up both restoration and a reconciliation with the thought of ages past.

Book 22 Things a Woman Must Know If She Loves a Man with Asperger s Syndrome

Download or read book 22 Things a Woman Must Know If She Loves a Man with Asperger s Syndrome written by Rudy Simone and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although having Asperger Syndrome (AS) can make romantic relations difficult, having a fulfilling relationship with an Asperger man is certainly not impossible. A woman in love with a man with AS may interpret his difficulties with communication and socialization as a lack of interest in the relationship. He may vacillate between being gentle and caring to seeming cold and distant. She may find his behaviour hard to understand, resulting in feelings of loneliness, isolation, and confusion. This book shows how to overcome these difficulties and maintain a loving relationship with an AS partner. From an unwillingness to show affection in public or even sleep in the same bed to problems holding down a job, this book looks at 22 common traits that women may discover when they are dating, living with or married to a man with Asperger's Syndrome. Rudy Simone explores the complications of Asperger's relationships with honesty and understanding, drawing on research and personal experience to inform and advise women with AS partners. She offers helpful tips for improving the relationship and finding fulfillment both individually and as a couple. This book will help women to understand the male Asperger's mind and, equally, it can help men with AS to see things from their partner's perspective. It will also be of interest to counsellors working with couples where the male partner has Asperger's Syndrome.

Drake's introductory essay place them in their biographical and historical context.

Book The Soundscape of Modernity

Download or read book The Soundscape of Modernity written by Emily Thompson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-09-17 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant history of acoustical technology and aural culture in early-twentieth-century America. In this history of aural culture in early-twentieth-century America, Emily Thompson charts dramatic transformations in what people heard and how they listened. What they heard was a new kind of sound that was the product of modern technology. They listened as newly critical consumers of aural commodities. By examining the technologies that produced this sound, as well as the culture that enthusiastically consumed it, Thompson recovers a lost dimension of the Machine Age and deepens our understanding of the experience of change that characterized the era. Reverberation equations, sound meters, microphones, and acoustical tiles were deployed in places as varied as Boston's Symphony Hall, New York's office skyscrapers, and the soundstages of Hollywood. The control provided by these technologies, however, was applied in ways that denied the particularity of place, and the diverse spaces of modern America began to sound alike as a universal new sound predominated. Although this sound—clear, direct, efficient, and nonreverberant—had little to say about the physical spaces in which it was produced, it speaks volumes about the culture that created it. By listening to it, Thompson constructs a compelling new account of the experience of modernity in America.
