Book excerpt: Few figures have had an impact as important on our understanding of artistic production after the turn of the millennium as Wade Guyton, whose practice has widely prompted reconsiderations of longstanding models of medium-specificity, appropriation, and critical engagement--and, perhaps more provocatively, performativity and readymade gesture--in art. This volume takes stock of critical perspectives on Guyton's work over the course of the artist's career, assembling both expansive, scholarly essays and more concise, journalistic assessments by an international array of authors including Daniel Baumann, Kirsty Bell, Bettina Funcke, Tim Griffin (editor), and John Kelsey.Just as significantly, this book holds up a mirror to the rapidly changing context for Guyton's work, which in a few short years shifted from discussions of the widespread use of modernist motifs in art during the early 2000s to others revolving around the artwork, anticipating its continuous circulation as digital media became ubiquitous in art and culture alike.Published with the Kunsthalle Zrich. This book is part of the JRP Ringier Documents series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wade Guyton, Petzel, New York, 1.16.14 - 2.22.14 is the long-awaited volume that documents a one night only performance hosted at Petzel Gallery as part of Guyton’s seminal 2014 exhibition, in which the artist made long horizontal black paintings stretched to precisely fit the gallery walls. In 2007, Guyton showed a series of black paintings made with his Epson 9600 printer and covered the gallery’s concrete floor with a facsimile of his studio’s plywood floor. For the 2014 exhibition, he made five new works on linen using the same digital file from 2007, this time enlarged to accommodate the increased width of an Epson 11880. The works were turned on their sides, hung horizontally and stretched to fit the gallery walls. Two of them were jammed in a corner. In addition to the five paintings, he presented a new wood and concrete sculpture that took its form from the coat check counter at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, where concurrently he had installed four paintings for the International. On February 17, 2014 the gallery hosted performances by James Campbell, I.U.D., and Blondes. Wade Guyton, Petzel, New York, 1.16.14 - 2.22.14 features over 400 illustrated pages of documentary footage from that performance and includes an essay by art historian Bettina Funcke entitled “Guyton’s Rooms.” The book was designed by Wade Guyton, Joseph Logan, and Zach Steinman.

Book excerpt: Founded in 2004, Guyton\Walker--the artist duo of Wade Guyton (born 1972) and Kelley Walker (born 1969)--is a partnership that has remained virtually without parallel in contemporary art, in that both artists work and exhibit individually. This volume examines all facets of their output, both singly and together. Essays by Sam Pulitzer and Quinn Latimer discuss individual authorship and joint techniques, while Jack Bankowsky's text examines Guyton\Walker within a broad art-historical context. Yilmaz Dziewior's introductory essay outlines the distinctive concept of the Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition this book accompanies, and addresses the relationship between individual and joint artistic practices. Each section on the three artistic positions features photographs of the installation in Kunsthaus Bregenz.

Book excerpt: The alienation between modern high culture and its public is a fundamental conflict of art. This book develops a theory of contemporary art in response to our moment, when artists and critics must respond to art's unprecedented popularity. Close readings of Friedrich Nietzsche, Jacques Rancière, Theodor W. Adorno, Clement Greenberg, Benjamin Buchloh, and Boris Groys provide the theoretical framework to comprehend a dialectic of art propelled by tension between the enduring history of art and the domineering presence of mass culture. "In dialogue with some of the most interesting modern and contemporary philosophical figures, Bettina Funcke traces the divisions and alternations in twentieth-century art between high and low engagements with popular forms. She reveals fascinatingly how twentieth-century artists not only seek to engage the people but also problematize 'the people' as a political and cultural construct." -- Michael Hardt, co-author of Empire and Multitude "In this far-ranging, muscular book, Bettina Funcke persuasively argues for a renewed attention to the dialectical relationship between high culture and mass culture. Against the notion that the two domains have become wholly indistinguishable, Funcke posits a stubborn, even agonistic sphere still discernable between them; in her account, it is the praxis of 'contemporary art' that both embodies and reflects upon this condition. Skillfully delivering a complex history of the longstanding, slippery debates around hierarchical and repressive structures of culture, Funcke moves through two centuries of philosophical and art historical discourse. Tending to canonical--and often contradictory--premises by authors including Buchloh, Derrida, Foucault, and Greenberg and to still-ambiguous and heavily debated artistic practices like those of Beuys and Warhol, Funcke's analysis extends, with great implication, into the philosophical and artistic details of our own moment. In Pop or Populus, Funcke delivers a cohesive, suggestive narrative that takes up the central issues of contemporary culture and refuses to consider any history a closed case." --Johanna Burton, art historian and critic, Associate Director and Senior Faculty, Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, New York Bettina Funcke studied philosophy, art history, and media theory at the Hochschule für Gestaltung/ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany, and has lectured at Bard College, Columbia University, Yale University, and the ZKM. Her writings have been published widely, both in artist monographs and magazines including Afterall, Artforum, Bookforum, Public, and Texte zur Kunst. A co-founder of The Leopard Press and the Continuous Project group, Funcke has worked as an editor at Dia Art Foundation and recently as Senior Editor U.S., Parkett. Book excerpt: The first large-scale exhibition exploring contemporary abstract painting. In a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, director Jeffrey Deitch considers the reemergence of abstract painting among a broad range of artists whose work is as diverse conceptually as it is aesthetically. Looking back to Andy Warhol’s seminal Shadow, Oxidation, and Rorschach paintings as among the many touchstones that underwrite the contemporary impulse to abstraction, the show features artists such as Julie Mehretu, whose large-scale works densely layer maplike markings; Josh Smith, whose lush canvases often explore a single theme repeatedly, such as his signature; and Tauba Auerbach, whose highly formal explorations of materials challenge conventional modes of perception. Additional artists include Rudolf Stingel, Christopher Wool, Glenn Ligon, Urs Fischer, Mark Bradford, Wade Guyton, Kelley Walker, Seth Price, Kerstin Brätsch and Adele Röder, and Sterling Ruby. The exhibition catalogue features a roundtable discussion between Jeffrey Deitch, art historian Johanna Burton, and curators James Meyer and Scott Rothkopf.

Book excerpt: Variations on the face: downtown legend Kenny Scharf's permutational exploration of character This new book by cult artist Kenny Scharf (born 1958) debuts his latest body of work, MOODZ. Comprising more than 330 circular paintings of faces--each one different--this ensemble gives form to a population of moods, feelings, expressions and colors. Scharf explains that the characters reflect aspects of his own personality: some days he needs to release his aggressive energy and they may reflect his anger; other faces reflect his exuberance and love of painting. Organized chromatically, the publication gathers the entire series of MOODZ, as well as exhibition views and documentation related to the project. It features an essay by American gallerist and cultural figure Jeffrey Deitch. A poster (28 x 21.5 inches)--on which all the faces are reproduced together as if to form a color chart--accompanies the publication.

Book excerpt: For this artist's book, Wade Guyton decided to print a large-format painting on a 1:1 scale. Flipping through the 360 pages, one looks at the fragments of a unique work, which could potentially be reconstructed by joining the pages together. In a sense, this book is a reflection on the questions of reproduction, the original, the source, and re-formation at the heart of Guyton's practice. If it could be said that Guyton's minimalistic "paintings," which connect directly to abstraction's history, conjure a restructuring of Modernist art and decor, this book offers a mise en abyme of these procedures.(Quelle: www.jrp-ringier.com).

Book excerpt: For the exhibition at the Josef Albers Museum the artist created four paintings, which are integrated into the presentation of works by Josef Albers starting a dialogue with them. Guyton's work is connected with the tradition of Modernism, which culminated in the paintings of the ,New York School' and in Minimal Art. With sparse vocabulary he is examining the different possibilities of a visual language. At the same time Wade Guyton is testing the idea of artistic authorship: the creative process is disconnected from the artist's own hand, his paintings are programmed on a computer and then printed on classical canvas to give them a physical form.00Exhibition: Josef Albers Museum Quadrat, Bottrop, Germany (23.11.2014 - 15.02.2015).

Book Wade Guyton Drawings for a Big Picture

Download or read book Wade Guyton Drawings for a Big Picture written by Wade Guyton and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
