His research is impressive, prodigious, and carefully conceived. His findings are illuminating, disturbing, and hopeful. I predict that this book will remain definitive in its field for many years to come."" Robert Lee, San Francisco Theological Seminary, author of Stranger in the Land: The Church in Japan ""A helpful survey and source book for the understanding of the historical development of Christianity in Japan since 1945."" Masao Takenaka, Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan ""This is an illuminating and scholarly study of the churches in Japan since 1945, churches of special interest because they have faced momentous changes and in some cases have been in continuous ferment. This book has significance also because it is about churches in which there has been intensive theological and social activity as they have gained more and more independence of the west; they have become a relatively new and very distinctive arena of Christian life."" John C. Bennett, former president, Union Theological Seminary, New York James M. Phillips served for seventeen years as a church fraternal worker in Japan, teaching church history at Tokyo Union Theological Seminary. He also served as Visiting Professor of Church History at San Francisco Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union.
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Peace History written by Charles Howlett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Oxford Handbook of Peace History uniquely explores the distinctive dynamics of peacemaking across time and place, and analyzing how past and present societies have created diverse cultures of peace and applied strategies for peaceful change. The analysis draws upon the expertise of many well-respected and distinguished scholars from disciplines such as anthropology, economics, history, international relations, journalism, peace studies, sociology, and theology. This work is divided into six parts. The first three sections address the chronological sweep of peace history from the Ancient Egyptians to the present while the last three cover biographical profiles of peace advocates, key issues in peace history, and the future of peace history. A central theme throughout is that the quest for peace is far more than the absence of war or the pursuit of social justice ideals. Students and scholars, alike, will appreciate that this work examines the field of peace history from an international perspective and expands analysis beyond traditional Eurocentric frameworks. This volume also goes far beyond previously published handbooks and anthologies in answering what are the strengths and limits of peace history as a discipline, and what can it offer for the future. It also has the unique features of a state-of-the-field introduction with a detailed treatment of peace history historiography and a chapter written by a noted archivist in the field that provides a comprehensive list of peace research resources. It is a work ably suited applicable for classrooms and scholarly bookshelves"--
Download or read book Seeing All Things Whole written by Thomas John Hastings and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kagawa Toyohiko was one of the best-known evangelists and social reformers of the twentieth century. Founder of several religious, educational, social welfare, medical, financial, labor, and agricultural cooperatives, he was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature (1947 and 1948), and four times for the Nobel Peace Prize (1954, 1955, 1956, and 1960). Appealing to the masses who had little knowledge of Christianity, Kagawa believed that a positive interpretation of nature was a key missiological issue in Japan. He reasoned that a faith, which is rooted in the "downward movement" of Christ's incarnation, must support the scientific quest and meditate on the purpose or "upward movement" implicit in scientific findings. Through an anti-reductionist methodological pluralism that strives to "sees all things whole," this "scientific mystic" employed a wide range of Japanese and Western cultural resources to assert a complementary role for science and religion in modern society.
