Book How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse

Download or read book How Rory Thorne Destroyed the Multiverse written by K. Eason and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Princess Rory Thorne must use the fairy blessings gifted to her at birth to change the multiverse--or possibly destroy it--in the first book in a humorous new space opera duology. The Princess Rory Thorne--eldest daughter, amateur arithmancer, blessed by fairies--always imagined she'd inherit her father's throne and govern the interplanetary Thorne Consortium. Then her father is assassinated, her mother gives birth to a son, and Rory is betrothed to Prince Ivar of the Tadeshi Free Worlds as a peace offering. But when Rory arrives on the space station Urse, she uncovers a treacherous plot to unseat Ivar and usurp his throne... Vernor Moss, Minister of Energy in the Tadeshi Free Worlds, wants to be king. Having conspired to name himself Regent to the minor (and somewhat idiotic) prince, he anticipates that he will someday rule in all but name. But the Regent wasn't counting on Rory Thorne, a princess with thirteen fairy blessings, the most important of which is take no bullshit. With only her bodyguard and her arithmancer-Vizier, Rory must outmaneuver the Regent and rescue the Prince. But in order to succeed, she may just have to start a war."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: 'Frank has but one duty before him. He must marry money.' The squire of Greshamsbury has fallen on hard times, and it is incumbent on his son Frank to make a good marriage. But Frank loves the doctor's niece, Mary Thorne, a girl with no money and mysterious parentage. He faces a terrible dilemma: should he save the estate, or marry the girl he loves? Mary, too, has to battle her feelings, knowing that marrying Frank would ruin his family and fly in the face of his mother's opposition. Her pride is matched by that of her uncle, Dr Thorne, who has to decide whether to reveal a secret that would resolve Frank's difficulty, or to uphold the innate merits of his own family heritage. The character of Dr Thorne reflects Trollope's own contradictory feelings about the value of tradition and the need for change. His subtle portrayal, and the comic skill and gentle satire with which the story is developed, are among the many pleasures of this delightful novel. In this storybook for adults, you will meet Silly Gunkle, Momo, Grantie, GiGi and Gramps—all adults, mind you, and all real-life characters. Phil, the storyteller, is a middle-aged pastor experienced in imparting spiritual wisdom, whose life is disrupted and forever changed by a precocious three-year-old named Naomi, his granddaughter and the book's central character. Thursdays with Naomi is a wonderfully readable reflection in which both Gramps and Naomi have something keenly important to say. It is a gift to all who have forgotten to make time lately to stand still, to laugh at themselves, or even to crazy-dance. If that's you, read this book slowly, and then listen more closely to this little child, and expect to be amazed. ------------------------------------ "This book gets four stars from me." — Dr. Tony Campolo, Professor Emeritus, Eastern University "These heartwarming, endearing, and oh-so-relatable vignettes from a pastor's relationship with his young granddaughter provide wise metaphors for how God views each of us." — Carol Kent, author, When I Lay My Isaac Down

Book Epic and Empire in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Epic and Empire in Nineteenth Century Britain written by Simon Dentith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, epic poetry in the Homeric style was widely seen as an ancient and anachronistic genre, yet Victorian authors worked to recreate it for the modern world. Simon Dentith explores the relationship between epic and the evolution of Britain's national identity in the nineteenth century up to the apparent demise of all notions of heroic warfare in the catastrophe of the First World War. Paradoxically, writers found equivalents of the societies which produced Homeric or Northern epics not in Europe, but on the margins of empire and among its subject peoples. Dentith considers the implications of the status of epic for a range of nineteenth-century writers, including Walter Scott, Matthew Arnold, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, William Morris and Rudyard Kipling. He also considers the relationship between epic poetry and the novel and discusses late nineteenth-century adventure novels, concluding with a brief survey of epic in the twentieth century.
