Download or read book The Photoplay Writer Classic Reprint written by Leona Radnor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Photoplay Writer Now, in everyone's life, there is at least one good story. In every little village, there is a score of romances and comedies. If one of them is not sufficient to fill out a photoplay of the desired length (from fifteen to twenty minutes), take incidents from several and weave them to gether. If the incidents are humorous, so much the better. Every producer is anxious to get hold of humorous plays. There is a great scarcity of them. The sort of humor want ed is not the rough variety - not an attempt to make people laugh at cruel jokes nor at accidents that mean injury to someone, nor at mere foolishness. The incidents must be of humorous situations that are innocently funny. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Photoplay Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Photoplay Classic Reprint written by James A. Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Photoplay The impression your synopsis makes upon the scenario editor who reads it determines to a large extent whether your plot merits consideration. The synopsis is written solely for the information of the editor and serves the purpose of apprizing him of your theme and the action incident to its unraveling. It may also be used in advertising the play, if produced. For obvious reasons the synopsis should be written after the plot has been completed and received final readjustments. It would manifestly be unwise to restrict the evolution of your theme to a brief summary which only describes it, and from which you should not feel at liberty to deviate, for the purpose of strengthening the action, as often as deemed desirable. While the theme is unraveling in the form of the plot, and its development is still fresh in your mind, an outline of the synopsis will suggest itself, but it is none the less important, and demands close study and frequent reconstruction. As in the construction of the plot, so in the writing of the synopsis, literary style is unimportant, and a strong, interesting description of the action is all that is required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technique of the Photoplay: Second Edition A series of incidents, closely connected, leading from a start to a definite ending, is a story when told in words. If it is. Told in dialogue form with appropriate action and gesture, it becomes a play. Done in action and gesture, but without words, it is a pantomime, but pantomime as it is understood on the stage, is not a photoplay. The pantomime of the stage employs a language of its own. Certain gestures mean certain things, and pantomime is told In a sort of sign language, not understood by many in America, but intelligible to most European theater goers Photoplay has no arbitrary gestures. The photoplayer who asks for food, stretches his hand toward the spread table and looks more or less appealing, according to the circumstances in which he finds himself. The pantomimist would Open his mouth and point down his throat with the first and second fingers of his hand. If it were drink that he desired, he would use the thumb, extending from his clenched fist, instead of his. Fingers. In - the early days, copying the work Of the French producers, this elementary language was employed in part in the making of the motion picture plays of that period, but as the art advanced, the stilted, arbitrary and unconvincing language of pantomime was replaced by natural gestures and actions. Photoplay, In a word, is not an adaptation Of another branch of literary work, but is possessed of a technique all its Own. There are, of course, the broad basic rules of literary construction and dramatic development, applicable to all forms of literature, whether written or verbally expressed, but in the past few years the art of writing photoplays has become possessed of a tech nique that is applicable only to the writing of picture plays and to no other form. Alvord is an advanced student of drama, A having been identified with educational dramatic: and professional work for many years. While in college she made a reputation as a dramatic reader and a student of dramatic construction. In 1913 she took up her residence on the Pacific Coast and established a studio of dramatic art in Port land, Oregon. In such connection she surrounded herself with much talent, including Lord and Lady fiberdeen, Marie Meyer, famous through her work at Oberamergau, and many others. Sufton Holdorne of Oxford at the University of California. When the war necessitated the closing of many private schools in every line of art, Mrs. Alvord moved to Los Alngeles and became interested in motion picture production. Her knowledge of dramatic literature, technique and values soon won for her recognition, and she accepted a position in the scenario department at the Metro Studios, where she made rapid advancement in her work until finally she was given full charge of the Research Department of that organiza tion. Recognizing her value, the palmer photoplay _corporation engaged her to organize its Department of Research, and this task she accomplished admirably. The advice contained in the following pages is indicative of the sound quality of common sense that characterizes all of Mrs. lvord's work.
