Book Writing on the Clouds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Writing on the Clouds Classic Reprint written by Arthur Newman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing on the Clouds Luke as an educated man knew this, and there fore he thus begins his book. The reader was not to question whether Luke was right. He was only to concern himself to understand what he wrote and to know the Christ whom he portrayed. It need not be said that this therefore is a unique preface. N o ordinary man in his senses could write such words and make such amazing claims. The writer would not have said this as he began a treatise on medicine. Flesh and blood present ed mysteries then as now to the ablest minds. But Luke does not hesitate to affirm that his following account of a far transcendent mystery, the Word made flesh was absolutely true. This preface implies that Theophilus needed such a book and had a right to it as a seeker after truth. Will we allow that Theophilus was a privileged person; that he had claims on the All wise and All-gracious Father more than we have; that he had needs really differing from ours? The very fact that this book has been saved out of the wreck of ages, and that it comes down to us prao tically unchallenged as the Gospel Luke wrote, is an answer. We need such a book as much as this man did. Traditions are as unreliable now as then. Opinions of men still are tinged with error. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book Feet in the Clouds

Download or read book Feet in the Clouds written by Richard Askwith and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 10 years after its first publication, Aurum are re-issuing this classic running book which has defined a genre. It includes an introduction from bestselling author Robert Macfarlane and an epilogue from Richard Askwith. The concept of fell-running is simple: it’s a sport that involves running over mountains – sometimes one, sometimes many. It’s also immensely demanding. While running uphill is a stamina-sapping slog, running pell-mell down the other side requires the agility – and even recklessness – of a mountain goat. And there’s the weather to contend with. It may make the sports pages only rarely, but in areas like the Lake District and Snowdonia fell-running is the basis of a whole culture – indeed, race organisers sometimes have to turn competitors away so that fragile mountain uplands are not irrevocably damaged by too many thundering feet. Fixtures like the annual Ben Nevis and Snowdon races attract runners from all over Britain, and beyond. Others, such as the Wasdale and Ennerdale fell runs in the Lakeland valleys – gruelling marathons of more than 20 miles – remain truly local events for which the whole community turns out, with many of the runners back on the same fells the next day tending sheep. Now, Richard Askwith explores the world of fell-running in the only legitimate way: by donning his Ron Hill vest and studded shoes to spend a season running as many of the great fell races as he can, from Borrowdale to Ben Nevis: an arduous schedule that tests the very limits of one’s stamina and courage. Over the months he also meets the greats of fell-running – like the remarkable Joss Naylor, who to celebrate his fiftieth birthday ran all 214 major Lakeland fells in a single week; Billy Bland, the combative Borrowdale man whose astounding records still stand for many of the top races; and Bill Teasdale, a hero of the sport’s earlier, professional days, whom he tracks down to his tiny cottage in the northern Lakes. And ultimately Askwith’s obsession drives him to attempt the ultimate challenge: the Bob Graham Round – a non-stop circuit of 42 of the Lake District’s highest peaks to be completed within 24 hours. This is a portrait of one of the few sports to have remained utterly true to its roots – in which the point is not fame or fortune but to run the ancient, wild landscape, and to be a hero, if at all, within one’s own valley. Feet in the Clouds is a chronicle of a masochistic but admirable sporting obsession, an insight into one of the oldest extreme sports, and a lyrical tribute to Britain’s mountains and the men and women who live among them.

Download or read book Dew Drops From the Rifted Clouds Classic Reprint written by J. M. Humphrey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dew Drops From the Rifted Clouds In view of the fact that inspiration has so much to say about the clouds, the writer does not deem it improper to carefully study them and thereby obtain some helpful spiritual lessons. The clouds would no doubt have a greater significance to us if we would reflect and call to mind the many times they are mentioned in the scriptures, for they are there spoken of not less than one hundred and one times. We remember that God led the children of Israel forty years with a pillar of cloud (Exd. 13:21). He also proclaimed to them the fiery law on Sinai's burning brow, from a thick cloud. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
