Book excerpt: I am not exaggerating when I say I get at least 8-9 messages over all social media platforms every single month asking me, how to write. "I love to write but I don't know how to begin doing it formally.""Can you give me tips on writing?""Who will read me when nobody knows me?""Is publishing a book very traumatising a process?""Why don't you take online classes teaching how to write?"These are just a few of the questions people ask me and while I really want to help them, I am never sure where do I begin from. Writing is such a vast activity on its whole and I believe no one can really be taught how to write. But all of us can learn to write better. In this book, I wanted to address questions about writing, editing, hiring an editor, and even, how to promote a book without spending a bomb. Many people remain confused and unaware of how none of this is too difficult if done the correct way.If you look hard and carefully, you might spot some errors in this book. I have not edited this book in the manner I run a fine-tooth comb through manuscripts of my clients. The reason for this is that I want to stress on an important point I keep telling all authors. The writer of the piece looks at it from the writer's eyes. The editor's eyes can spot things a writer's eye might not. Of this book, I am (only) the author.I hope this book helps you. I know publishing is not a smooth experience. I cannot help you get published, but I hope I can help you with a few other things that come up in the process. I'd love to know what you think. Do mail me, I have mentioned my email id at the beginning of the book.

Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Book Adorno Foucault and the Critique of the West

Download or read book Adorno Foucault and the Critique of the West written by Deborah Cook and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alliance of critical theory between Frankfurt and Paris Adorno, Foucault and the Critique of the West argues that critical theory continues to offer valuable resources for critique and contestation during this turbulent period. To assess these resources, it examines the work of two of the twentieth century's more prominent social theorists: Theodor W. Adorno and Michel Foucault. Although Adorno was situated squarely in the Marxist tradition that Foucault would occasionally challenge, Deborah Cook demonstrates that their critiques of our current predicament are complementary in important respects. Among other things, these critiques converge in their focus on the historical conditions-economic in Adorno and political in Foucault-that gave rise to the racist and authoritarian tendencies that continue to blight the West. Cook also shows that, when Adorno and Foucault plumb the economic and political forces that have shaped our identities, they offer remarkably similar answers to the perennial question: What is to be done?

Book The Subversive Copy Editor

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carol Fisher Saller
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2009-08-01
  • ISBN : 0226734102
  • Pages : 151 pages

Download or read book The Subversive Copy Editor written by Carol Fisher Saller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year writers and editors submit over three thousand grammar and style questions to the Q&A page at The Chicago Manual of Style Online. Some are arcane, some simply hilarious—and one editor, Carol Fisher Saller, reads every single one of them. All too often she notes a classic author-editor standoff, wherein both parties refuse to compromise on the "rights" and "wrongs" of prose styling: "This author is giving me a fit." "I wish that I could just DEMAND the use of the serial comma at all times." "My author wants his preface to come at the end of the book. This just seems ridiculous to me. I mean, it’s not a post-face." In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller casts aside this adversarial view and suggests new strategies for keeping the peace. Emphasizing habits of carefulness, transparency, and flexibility, she shows copy editors how to build an environment of trust and cooperation. One chapter takes on the difficult author; another speaks to writers themselves. Throughout, the focus is on serving the reader, even if it means breaking "rules" along the way. Saller’s own foibles and misadventures provide ample material: "I mess up all the time," she confesses. "It’s how I know things." Writers, Saller acknowledges, are only half the challenge, as copy editors can also make trouble for themselves. (Does any other book have an index entry that says "terrorists. See copy editors"?) The book includes helpful sections on e-mail etiquette, work-flow management, prioritizing, and organizing computer files. One chapter even addresses the special concerns of freelance editors. Saller’s emphasis on negotiation and flexibility will surprise many copy editors who have absorbed, along with the dos and don’ts of their stylebooks, an attitude that their way is the right way. In encouraging copy editors to banish their ignorance and disorganization, insecurities and compulsions, the Chicago Q&A presents itself as a kind of alter ego to the comparatively staid Manual of Style. In The Subversive Copy Editor, Saller continues her mission with audacity and good humor.

Book The Write Crowd

Download or read book The Write Crowd written by Lori A. May and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing may be a solitary profession, but it is also one that relies on a strong sense of community. The Write Crowd offers practical tips and examples of how writers of all genres and experience levels contribute to the sustainability of the literary community, the success of others, and to their own well-rounded writing life. Through interviews and examples of established writers and community members, readers are encouraged to immerse themselves fully in the literary world and the community-at-large by engaging with literary journals, reading series and public workshops, advocacy and education programs, and more. In contemporary publishing, the writer is expected to contribute outside of her own writing projects. Editors and publishers hope to see their writers active in the community, and the public benefits from a more personal interaction with authors. Yet the writer must balance time and resources between deadlines, day jobs, and other commitments. The Write Crowd demonstrates how writers may engage with peers and readers, and have a positive effect on the greater community, without sacrificing writing time.

Book Everyone Can Write

Download or read book Everyone Can Write written by Howard Gelman and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone Can Write is an easy-to-understand, practical, 'how to write' book that is accessible to everyone from a business executive wanting to polish his reports to a retiree wanting to chronicle her family history. It solves the problems that beginning writers struggle with by giving them an easy-to-follow and simple set of rules that allows them to write rapidly and clearly. The book outlines the three forms of non-fictionwriting: report, narrative and essay. Each one is dissected and a set of rules applied to each structure. The rules are easily put into practice and vary for each structure. For example, in report writing, two easy-to-apply rules are: 25 words to a sentence and 3 or 4 sentences in a paragraph. The author has also developed a foolproof method of structuring your writing, so that you make effective use of your time. It's based on the easy-to-remember three step formula: Pre-write, Free-write, Re-write. Pre-write refers to researching the necessary information. Free-write refers to getting the information onto the computer screen. Re-write refers to the essential task of editing the writing into clear readable text. This technique allows writers to become the editors of their own writing, thereby dramatically improving its quality. The essentials of grammar and punctuation, easily confused words and other useful tips for writers are also covered.
