Book Euclidean Quantum Gravity

Download or read book Euclidean Quantum Gravity written by G. W. Gibbons and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Euclidean approach to Quantum Gravity was initiated almost 15 years ago in an attempt to understand the difficulties raised by the spacetime singularities of classical general relativity which arise in the gravitational collapse of stars to form black holes and the entire universe in the Big Bang. An important motivation was to develop an approach capable of dealing with the nonlinear, non-perturbative aspects of quantum gravity due to topologically non-trivial spacetimes. There are important links with a Riemannian geometry. Since its inception the theory has been applied to a number of important physical problems including the thermodynamic properties of black holes, quantum cosmology and the problem of the cosmological constant. It is currently at the centre of a great deal of interest. This is a collection of survey lectures and reprints of some important lectures on the Euclidean approach to quantum gravity in which one expresses the Feynman path integral as a sum over Riemannian metrics. As well as papers on the basic formalism there are sections on Black Holes, Quantum Cosmology, Wormholes and Gravitational Instantons.

Book Lorentzian Wormholes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matt Visser
  • Publisher : American Institute of Physics
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 454 pages

Download or read book Lorentzian Wormholes written by Matt Visser and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 1995 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on pivotal work by Einstein, Wheeler, Thorne, Hawking, and others, Matt Visser charts the development and current state of Lorentzian wormhole physics. Dr. Visser shows that by pushing established physical theories to their limits, it is possible to deduce the true physics of such exotica as wormholes and time travel. The physical framework he uses is derived from one of the major research frontiers of modern theoretical physics: quantum gravity the intersection of classical Einstein gravity and quantum field theory. About the Author Matt Visser is Research Assistant Professor at Washington University, St. Louis. He has lectured in the United States and abroad on topics including wormhole physics, time travel, and the chronology protection conjecture. He has conducted postdoctoral research at both the University of Southern California and at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Book The Emergence of Spacetime in String Theory

Download or read book The Emergence of Spacetime in String Theory written by Tiziana Vistarini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of space and time is one of the most fascinating and fundamental philosophical issues which presently engages at the deepest level with physics. During the last thirty years this notion has been object of an intense critical review in the light of new scientific theories which try to combine the principles of both general relativity and quantum theory—called theories of quantum gravity. This book considers the way string theory shapes its own account of spacetime disappearance from the fundamental level.
