Book Harry Potter s World Wide Influence

Download or read book Harry Potter s World Wide Influence written by Diana Patterson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harry Potter series forms a single epic story that has been published in nearly 70 languages, and has been examined in a large number of disciplines. This collection of essays contributes to the scholarly discourse that forms Potter Studies. These essays take on the consideration of Rowling's work as being worthy of study as a phenomenon and influence, as well as a work of literary value. They add genuine statistical information about the reasons for the books' popularity, consider their effects on child readers, and examine some deep-rooted reasons for their having been manipulated in American publishing, in film adaptations, in musical complements, and in their thingification in popular culture around the world. Some of these essays take on the critics of the books' religion and considerations of psychological, as well as philosophical good and evil, and well as some stylistic anomalies. The fact that scholars from China, Germany, Poland, Romania, and Israel, in addition to English-speaking nations, have felt compelled to examine these books in detail testifies in part to Harry Potter's world-wide influence.

  • Author : Richard Corry
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Power and Influence written by Richard Corry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is a complex place, and this complexity is an obstacle to our attempts to explain, predict, and control it. In Power and Influence, Richard Corry investigates the assumptions that are built into the reductive method of explanation—the method whereby we study the components of a complex system in relative isolation and use the information so gained to explain or predict the behaviour of the complex whole. He investigates the metaphysical presuppositions built into the reductive method, seeking to ascertain what the world must be like in order that the method could work. Corry argues that the method assumes the existence of causal powers that manifest causal influence—a relatively unrecognised ontological category, of which forces are a paradigm example. The success of the reductive method, therefore, is an argument for the existence of such causal influences. The book goes on to show that adding causal influence to our ontology gives us the resources to solve some traditional problems in the metaphysics of causal powers, laws of nature, causation, emergence, and possibly even normative ethics. What results, then, is not just an understanding of the reductive method, but an integrated metaphysical worldview that is grounded in an ontology of power and influence.

Book SUMMARY Location Is Still Everything The Surprising Influence Of The Real World On How We Search Shop And Sell In The Virtual One By David R Bell

Download or read book SUMMARY Location Is Still Everything The Surprising Influence Of The Real World On How We Search Shop And Sell In The Virtual One By David R Bell written by Shortcut Edition and published by Shortcut Edition. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Our summary is short, simple and pragmatic. It allows you to have the essential ideas of a big book in less than 30 minutes. By reading this summary, you will discover the influence (sometimes counter-intuitive) that the real world has on how to search, buy and sell in the virtual world. You will also discover : why online shoppers have overlapping behaviors; why geographically distant buyers sometimes show strong similarities; why people who are different from their environment make high-potential buyers; the importance of sharing information offline about the growth of online business; how to use this knowledge to create a high-performing online business. According to Location Is (Still) Everything, a user's online activity is driven by their geographic location. There are three findings that justify the interest in location. First, two people living in different conditions and environments move in the virtual world in different ways, even if they are the same age, have the same salary and the same level of education. Secondly, a salesman will be more or less attractive to the customer depending on the distance between them. A natural offline effect, where the distance that separates the seller from the customer corresponds to the distance the customer has to travel to make his purchases. What is more counter-intuitive is that it exists online as well: a notice will be more or less important depending on where it comes from and buyers will be more inclined to make transactions with sellers who are located near them. This effect is reinforced by the cell phone: buyers are even less willing to travel when doing their research. Third, buying preferences and behavior are almost determined by where the customers live. What are the underlying origins of these real-world effects on how people search, buy and sell in the virtual world? *Buy now the summary of this book for the modest price of a cup of coffee!
