Book World Technology and Human Destiny Classic Reprint

Download or read book World Technology and Human Destiny Classic Reprint written by Raymond Aron and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from World Technology and Human Destiny Raymond Aron conceived, prepared, and directed the Basel-Rheinfelden conference. The need for it had become increasingly clear in the course of the preceding conferences organized under the presidency of Michael Polanyi. The over-all title given them was "Tradition and Evolution." The technical revolution is spreading throughout the world; new techniques are revolutionizing our way of life. But does the industrial society dictate to the mind - to the point of imposing a determined ideology upon it - or do our moral values allow us to impress various forms on this society? Necessity and liberty, the one and the many, instrumental values and ultimate values present questions of a philosophical nature that Raymond Aron felt should be discussed by philosophers, but not in an abstract way. The originality of the Basel-Rheinfelden conference lies in the fact that eminent theoreticians and specialists have been called upon to make concrete predictions and give their opinions on a wide range of subjects. It was practically impossible to include within the limits of a single volume the richness of the Rheinfelden conversations. In any event, much had to be condensed, therefore much sacrificed. But the cutting was also extremely uneven. As was to be expected, the discussions grew animated and strayed far from the main subject, and, although these were often the most interesting and fruitful exchanges, they had to be eliminated for the sake of unity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technology and Civilization Everywhere in modern life, about us, in us, with us, beside us, is felt the influence of scientific art acting as an agent and as companion, whose ceaseless service we never realize until for a moment it fails us. Commonplace though this be, still it seems to me that in the cultured world and perhaps in the narrower circles of scientific men, this truth is too slightly valued. The value of scientific technology in its true character as producer and promoter of civilization, is too little recog nized. Download or read book Nonzero written by Robert Wright and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2001-04-20 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his bestselling The Moral Animal, Robert Wright applied the principles of evolutionary biology to the study of the human mind. Now Wright attempts something even more ambitious: explaining the direction of evolution and human history–and discerning where history will lead us next. In Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny, Wright asserts that, ever since the primordial ooze, life has followed a basic pattern. Organisms and human societies alike have grown more complex by mastering the challenges of internal cooperation. Wright's narrative ranges from fossilized bacteria to vampire bats, from stone-age villages to the World Trade Organization, uncovering such surprises as the benefits of barbarian hordes and the useful stability of feudalism. Here is history endowed with moral significance–a way of looking at our biological and cultural evolution that suggests, refreshingly, that human morality has improved over time, and that our instinct to discover meaning may itself serve a higher purpose. Insightful, witty, profound, Nonzero offers breathtaking implications for what we believe and how we adapt to technology's ongoing transformation of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's History and Its Makers, Vol. 4 There is some difficulty, when the subject is treated historically, in separating philosophy from science on the one hand, and from theology on the other. For in the early growth and development of human knowledge these three instruments of progress are so intertwined and inter dependent, have such closely related causal connections, and are made one, at least functionally, by nexi which can not be severed without fatality to all, that we are perforce required to take account of all when examining each. Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestseller The Inevitable— a sweeping vision of technology as a living force that can expand our individual potential In this provocative book, one of today's most respected thinkers turns the conversation about technology on its head by viewing technology as a natural system, an extension of biological evolution. Kevin Kelly offers a dozen trajectories in the coming decades for this near-living system. And as we align ourselves with technology's agenda, we can capture its colossal potential. This visionary and optimistic book explores how technology gives our lives greater meaning and is a must-read for anyone curious about the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of to-Day: Studies in Conscience and Character Says Christ is dead, Paul says He is alive, and the difference between these statements means the difference between heaven and hell. Every sin ful thought, word and deed; every sinful era or movement in social or political life; every im moral book, error and superstition comes from the belief that Christ is dead; and every noble life, true thought, word and deed, and advance ment of truth and holiness in the nation, Church and individual, in science, art and literature, flows from the bhlief that Christ is alive. God is not dead. A belief in the omnipresence of God has been the mainspring of civilization. From the beginning human thought has been haunted by the presence of God. We are in touch with the Invisible. He is more real than our dearest companion. The visible things are shadowy-time things which must pass away, but the unseen is permanent and eternal. The invisible forces in the world and in man are persistent and will be dominant. We cannot see the invisible forces of thought, passion, memory and imagination in the person nearest to us. God can touch human hearts so faintly that we alone can tell, yet He holds the world so firmly that a bird's nest will not fall to the ground.
