Book Yes My Accent Is Real

Download or read book Yes My Accent Is Real written by Kunal Nayyar and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Mindy Kaling’s bestseller Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? or Judd Apatow’s Sick in the Head, a collection of humorous, autobiographical essays from Kunal Nayyar, best known as Raj on CBS’s #1 hit comedy The Big Bang Theory. Of all the charming misfits on television, there’s no doubt Raj from The Big Bang Theory—the sincere yet incurably geeky Indian astrophysicist—ranks among the misfittingest. Now, we meet the actor who is every bit as loveable as the character he plays on TV. In this revealing collection of essays written in his irreverent, hilarious, and self-deprecating voice, Kunal Nayyar traces his journey from a little boy in New Delhi who mistakes an awkward first kiss for a sacred commitment, gets nosebleeds chugging Coca-Cola to impress other students, and excels in the sport of badminton, to the confident, successful actor on the set of TV’s most-watched sitcom since Friends. Going behind the scenes of The Big Bang Theory and into his personal experiences, Kunal introduces readers to the people who helped him grow, such as his James Bond-loving, mustachioed father. Kunal also walks us through his college years in Portland, where he takes his first sips of alcohol and learns to let loose with his French, 6’8” gentle-giant roommate, works his first-ever job for the university’s housekeeping department cleaning toilets for minimum wage, and begins a series of romantic exploits that go just about as well as they would for Raj. (That is, until he meets and marries a former Miss India in an elaborate seven-day event that we get to experience in a chapter titled “My Big Fat Indian Wedding.”) Full of heart, but never taking itself too seriously, this witty collection of underdog tales follows a young man as he traverses two continents in search of a dream, along the way transcending culture and language (and many, many embarrassing incidents) to somehow miraculously land the role of a lifetime.

Book excerpt: Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending. Luna Rexroth is everyone's favorite wallflower. Sweet. Caring. Charitable. Quiet. Fake. Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants-namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language. Who taught her how to laugh. To live. To love. Knight Cole is everyone's favorite football hero. Gorgeous. Athletic. Rugged. Popular. Liar. This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street- Luna. But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn't need his protection anymore. When life throws a curveball at All Saints' golden boy, he's forced to realize not all knights are heroes. Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.

Book Everything Happens for a Reason

Download or read book Everything Happens for a Reason written by Kate Bowler and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A meditation on sense-making when there’s no sense to be made, on letting go when we can’t hold on, and on being unafraid even when we’re terrified.”—Lucy Kalanithi “Belongs on the shelf alongside other terrific books about this difficult subject, like Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air and Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal.”—Bill Gates NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY REAL SIMPLE Kate Bowler is a professor at Duke Divinity School with a modest Christian upbringing, but she specializes in the study of the prosperity gospel, a creed that sees fortune as a blessing from God and misfortune as a mark of God’s disapproval. At thirty-five, everything in her life seems to point toward “blessing.” She is thriving in her job, married to her high school sweetheart, and loves life with her newborn son. Then she is diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. The prospect of her own mortality forces Kate to realize that she has been tacitly subscribing to the prosperity gospel, living with the conviction that she can control the shape of her life with “a surge of determination.” Even as this type of Christianity celebrates the American can-do spirit, it implies that if you “can’t do” and succumb to illness or misfortune, you are a failure. Kate is very sick, and no amount of positive thinking will shrink her tumors. What does it mean to die, she wonders, in a society that insists everything happens for a reason? Kate is stripped of this certainty only to discover that without it, life is hard but beautiful in a way it never has been before. Frank and funny, dark and wise, Kate Bowler pulls the reader deeply into her life in an account she populates affectionately with a colorful, often hilarious retinue of friends, mega-church preachers, relatives, and doctors. Everything Happens for a Reason tells her story, offering up her irreverent, hard-won observations on dying and the ways it has taught her to live. Praise for Everything Happens for a Reason “I fell hard and fast for Kate Bowler. Her writing is naked, elegant, and gripping—she’s like a Christian Joan Didion. I left Kate’s story feeling more present, more grateful, and a hell of a lot less alone. And what else is art for?”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love Warrior and president of Together Rising

Book A Manual of Zoology

Download or read book A Manual of Zoology written by Richard Hertwig and published by . This book was released on 1912 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Zoology The favor with which the first and second American editions of Hertwig's Zoology have been received has led to a thorough revision of the whole with a close comparison with the latest German edition. In this there have been introduced many new features bringing the work up to date. These include a discussion of Mendelian inheritance, many modifications in the account of the theory of evolution, and a considerable enlargement of the Protozoa and especially of the pathogenic forms, making the volume of more value to the student of medicine. To have included these without changes elsewhere would have resulted in a much larger volume. But the demand in American colleges has been for a smaller work and so a reduction has been made in two ways. There has been a condensation by the elimination of unnecessary words and phrases and by the omission of considerable matter of minor importance. Then there has been the recognition of the fact that the book has two uses, one in the class room the other as a reference work. The two classes of matter have been distinguished by difference of type. No attempt has been made to bring the systematic names into accord with the latest vagaries of the systematists. No useful and could be served by changing or transferring the well-known names of Echidna, Coluber, Amia, Homarus, Unio, Holothuria, Am ba, etc., while the confusion this would introduce would be enormous. It should be understood that while the revision is based upon the German edition of Professor Hertwig, he should not be held responsible for any changes introduced. The whole responsibility for these rests upon the American reviser.

Download or read book Good Teams Win Great Teams Cover written by Pat Hagerty and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I will teach you how to win more bets, but first a story... I was hungover. I had spent the previous night in an Italian bar trying to convince naïve girls that I was Jason Sehorn of the New York Giants. This was my move. It wasn't particularly effective, but it was the best I had... The next morning I found myself on a train going from Bologna to Rome. I was young, and this would be my first visit to the ancient city. As luck would have it, I was seated next to Evelyn O'Reilly. Evelyn was a stunning foreign exchange student from Dublin, and we hit if off. We hit if off so well that when she got to her stop in Florence she invited me to join her for the weekend. In a moment of sheer madness, I politely declined. I had the next few hours to contemplate what had just happened, and I became paralyzed by my own stupidity. What the hell was wrong with me? I had an amazing opportunity, but I was too damn dumb to realize it. This exquisite creature exited my life forever, only to revisit every now and again as a memory... This same scenario plays out EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND of the football season. Beautiful opportunities are out there, but most bettors can't see them. They aren't trained on what to look for, and when they finally do discover a gem, they are too scared to act. Taking advantage of situational opportunities is what separates the sharps from the stiffs. "Good Teams Win, Great Teams Cover" is a collection of betting advice that WILL make you a sharper sports bettor. My strategy of situational betting in college and pro football is a time-tested method for beating the sportsbook. I highlight over twenty situational opportunities where the bettor will gain an advantage over the house. Included are detailed examples from past football seasons which will allow the reader to gain a firm understanding of the concepts that can make your betting very profitable. I also mix in candid and embarrassing personal stories that makes this a highly entertaining read while providing valuable insight that will educate all levels of degenerate gamblers. If you are sick of praying for backdoor covers, if countless bad beats have made your betting life miserable, if you are reloading your gambling account way too often - then this book is for you. About the Author: Pat Hagerty is the luckiest SOB out there. He gambles the way he lives life, and he tries to get a little better every day. This has led to abundant success in his personal, professional and his gambling life. Besides being a degenerate gambler, Pat is the host of Club Shaw's Draft Party. He has written three other books on a subject you don't care about. He shot 67 at Red's, and leads his beer hockey league in penalty minutes. You can check out his weekly picks at fishyfive.com. Book A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud

Download or read book A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud written by Brian May and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer and autumn of 2006 I read several interviews with Brian May in which he mentioned his desire to complete the PhD that he had abandoned in 1974. I looked up the papers he had published while a PhD student, which were on spectroscopic studies of the motion of the dust responsible for the zodiacal light, and felt that there was a basis for a thesis. Since he had been a student at Imperial, I knew, as Head of the Astrophysics Group at Imperial, that it would be good for the Group if he came and worked with us. I got in touch with him by email and suggested he come and talk about it. He replied enthusiastically and said that he was working on typing up what he had completed by 1974. I gradually realized that I was the only staff member at Imperial who had previously worked on zodiacal dust, so that I would have to act as his supervisor. Eventually we met and I tried to assess whether he would be able to find time for the huge amount of work that finishing off a thesis involves, particularly if it has not been touched for over 30 years. Since some of Brian’s emails were coming from the recording studio I knew there was strong competition for his time.

Book Inclusive Conversations

Download or read book Inclusive Conversations written by Mary-Frances Winters and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is impressive is not only how Winters builds a case for the urgency and need for bold, inclusive conversations but that she also gives specific strategies and competencies to turn her theory into practice.” —Dr. Sheila Robinson, publisher and CEO, Diversity Woman Media Effective dialogue across different dimensions of diversity, such as race, gender, age, religion, or sexual orientation, fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion, which in turn leads to greater productivity, performance, and innovation. Whether in the workplace, faith communities, or educational settings, our differences can tear us apart rather than bring us together if we do not know how to communicate. Recognizing our collective responsibility to earnestly address our differences and increase understanding and empathy will not only enhance organizational goals but will also lead to a healthier, kinder, and more compassionate world. Award-winning diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant Mary-Frances Winters has been leading workshops on what she calls Bold, Inclusive Conversations for years. In this book she offers specific dialogue strategies to foster greater understanding on the following topics: • Recognizing the importance of creating equity and sharing power • Dealing with the "fragility" of dominant groups--their discomfort in engaging with historically subordinated groups • Addressing the exhaustion historically marginalized groups feel from constantly explaining their different lived experience • Exploring how to build trust and create psychologically safe spaces for dialogue This guide is comprehensive for anyone who wants to break down the barriers that separate us and facilitate discussions on potentially polarizing topics.
