Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questing was Sherlock Holmes’s business. He famously adopted the latest forensic techniques, channelled the Victorian passion for enquiry, kept abreast of the key scientific breakthroughs of his age, and conducted his investigations in an enigmatic and stylised manner. And the brains behind it all was, of course, the great Arthur Conan Doyle. In this deep dive into the contemporary world of Holmes and Conan Doyle, biographer Andrew Lycett explores all that encompasses the world of the great detective – tracing the infamous character’s own interests, personality and mythologised biography alongside that of his creator’s. From the Victorian crazes for detection and séance, to contemporary developments in science and psychology, Lycett weaves together everything that inspired Conan Doyle in creating the world’s most famous detective and one of fiction's most enduring, enigmatic and recognisable characters.

Download or read book World s Best Hobby written by Dave Bell W6AQ and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worlds Best Hobby is an unusual title for a memoir, which is exactly what this book is. Its my life in the fascinating hobby of Amateur Radio. Much of my professional life is spent producing documentary and reality programs for television (including more than a few about Ham Radio) where I learned that the purpose of a title is to attract an audience and if it was also true, all the better. The challenge with documentary films is to make them entertaining first and foremost, and informational if possible. Ive tried very hard to make this book entertaining, and from feedback Ive gotten (from Hams and wannabee Hams who found it posted online as I was writing it) Ive succeeded, at least to some extent. I tried to make the book fun because Ham Radio is fun. And Ham Radio has more facets than a cheap diamond, as youll discover as you dig into Worlds Best Hobby. Enjoy! PS. Let me know what you think of Worlds Best Hobby especially if you like it. 73, Dave Bell, W6AQ
Download or read book Words Between Worlds written by John Dominelli and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, when John Dominelli was twenty years old, he left his home in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, on what he originally thought would be a six-month “working holiday” in New Zealand. However, not long into his journey, feeling the seductive pull of the vast and mysterious world, what started as a planned sojourn eventually turned into an epic three-year spiritual odyssey, taking him from New Zealand to Australia, Asia, India, Europe, and many points between. John’s journey was interrupted and enriched by a psycho-emotional “meltdown,” two serious illnesses, a powerful psychedelic interlude with psilocybin mushrooms, and a mystical encounter with Nisargadatta Maharaj, the now well-known sage from Bombay. An epic coming-of-age memoir that is part love letter to a bygone age and part inspirational text, stirring a desire in readers to seek out a life less ordinary.
