Book The Politics of Fresh Water

Download or read book The Politics of Fresh Water written by Catherine M. Ashcraft and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water scarcity is not simply the result of what nature has to offer but always involves power relations and political decisions. This volume discusses the politics of the freshwater crisis, specifically how access to water is determined in different regions and historical periods, how conflict is constructed and managed, and how identity and efforts to control water systems, through development, technologies, and institutions, shape one another. The book analyzes responses to the water crisis as efforts to mitigate water insecurity and as expressions of collective identity that legitimate, resist, or seek to transform existing inequalities. The chapters focus on different processes that contribute to freshwater scarcity, including land use decisions, pollution, privatization, damming, climate change, discrimination, water management institutions and technology. Case studies are included from North and South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and New Zealand.

Book Sedimentation and Sustainable Use of Reservoirs and River Systems S dimentation et Utilisation Durable des R servoirs et Syst mes Fluviaux

Download or read book Sedimentation and Sustainable Use of Reservoirs and River Systems S dimentation et Utilisation Durable des R servoirs et Syst mes Fluviaux written by ICOLD CIGB and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICOLD Bulletin 147 discusses the upstream and downstream fluvial morphological impacts of reservoir sedimentation and possible mitigation measures. The current state of and possible future sediment deposition in reservoirs have been investigated globally with the aid of the ICOLD Register on Dams. The global mean reservoir sedimentation rate was found to be 0.8 % of the original storage capacity per year. The book also investigates the impacts of dams on the ecology related to fluvial morphological changes, and guidelines are proposed to mitigate the impacts on the downstream river morphology. Finally an economical model is presented which considers a life cycle approach for reservoir conservation.

Book Dam Breach Modeling Technology

Download or read book Dam Breach Modeling Technology written by V.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dams are constructed for economic development, and their construction involves large investments of money, and natural and human resources. Of the various types of dams constructed around the globe, earth dams are the most common type and constitute the vast majority of dams. When adam fails, it culminates in the sudden release of artificially stored water which, in turn, becomes a potential menace to virtually everything downstream. The dam failure may result in loss of life and property. In recent years, instances of dam failure in the world have been too many, and the resulting loss too high. As a result, dam safety pro grams have been developed in most countries of the world since the beginning of the nineteenth eighties. · Earth dams are more susceptible to failure than other types. The cause of failure is often either overtopping or piping. The modeling of dam breaching due to either or both of these causes is of fundamental importance to development of dam-safety programs. This book is, therefore, an attempt to present some aspects of earth-dam breach modeling technology. It is hoped that others will be stimulated to write more comprehensive texts on this subject of growing interest and importance. The book is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter is introductory and discusses some aspects of dams and dam failures in the world.
