Book Evacuation of Sediments from Reservoirs

Download or read book Evacuation of Sediments from Reservoirs written by Rodney White and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2001 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with one of the methods of removing sediments from reservoirs, namely the flushing of sediments through purpose built outlet works within the dam. This technique can be applied to existing dams, with adaptation of the engineering works, and to new dams. The book gives practical guidance on the necessary hydrological, hydraulic, sedimentological and topographical features for successful flushing. In this book the author draws together his wealth of experience of working in this field.

Book excerpt: The International Committee on Large Dams (ICOLD) held its 27th International Congress in Marseille, France (12-19 November 2021). The proceedings of the congress focus on four main questions: 1. Reservoir sedimentation and sustainable development; 2. Safety and risk analysis; 3. Geology and dams, and 4. Small dams and levees. The book thoroughly discusses these questions and is indispensable for academics, engineers and professionals involved or interested in engineering, hydraulic engineering and related disciplines.

Book Dams and Development

    Book Details:
  • Author : World Commission on Dams
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-05-13
  • ISBN : 1134897987
  • Pages : 446 pages

Download or read book Dams and Development written by World Commission on Dams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the year 2000, the world had built more than 45,000 large dams to irrigate crops, generate power, control floods in wet times and store water in dry times. Yet, in the last century, large dams also disrupted the ecology of half the world's rivers, displaced tens of millions of people from their homes and left nations burdened with debt. Their impacts have inevitably generated growing controversy and conflicts. Resolving their role in meeting water and energy needs is vital for the future and illustrates the complex development challenges that face our societies. The Report of the World Commission on Dams: - is the product of an unprecedented global public policy effort to bring governments, the private sector and civil society together in one process - provides the first comprehensive global and independent review of the performance and impacts of dams - presents a new framework for water and energy resources development - develops an agenda of seven strategic priorities with corresponding criteria and guidelines for future decision-making. Challenging our assumptions, the Commission sets before us the hard, rigorous and clear-eyed evidence of exactly why nations decide to build dams and how dams can affect human, plant and animal life, for better or for worse. Dams and Development: A New Framework for Decision-Making is vital reading on the future of dams as well as the changing development context where new voices, choices and options leave little room for a business-as-usual scenario.

Book Dam Breach Modeling Technology

Download or read book Dam Breach Modeling Technology written by V.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dams are constructed for economic development, and their construction involves large investments of money, and natural and human resources. Of the various types of dams constructed around the globe, earth dams are the most common type and constitute the vast majority of dams. When adam fails, it culminates in the sudden release of artificially stored water which, in turn, becomes a potential menace to virtually everything downstream. The dam failure may result in loss of life and property. In recent years, instances of dam failure in the world have been too many, and the resulting loss too high. As a result, dam safety pro grams have been developed in most countries of the world since the beginning of the nineteenth eighties. · Earth dams are more susceptible to failure than other types. The cause of failure is often either overtopping or piping. The modeling of dam breaching due to either or both of these causes is of fundamental importance to development of dam-safety programs. This book is, therefore, an attempt to present some aspects of earth-dam breach modeling technology. It is hoped that others will be stimulated to write more comprehensive texts on this subject of growing interest and importance. The book is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter is introductory and discusses some aspects of dams and dam failures in the world.

Book Arch Dams

Download or read book Arch Dams written by Jose O. Pedro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume provides a comprehensive understanding of the modern criteria, models and methods of analysis of arch dams, for normal operation conditions and under exceptional loads. This information is important for all those involved in the evaluation of the behaviour and condition of arch dams and other large structures, either for design or monitoring purpose.

Book Sedimentation and Sustainable Use of Reservoirs and River Systems S dimentation et Utilisation Durable des R servoirs et Syst mes Fluviaux

Download or read book Sedimentation and Sustainable Use of Reservoirs and River Systems S dimentation et Utilisation Durable des R servoirs et Syst mes Fluviaux written by ICOLD CIGB and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICOLD Bulletin 147 discusses the upstream and downstream fluvial morphological impacts of reservoir sedimentation and possible mitigation measures. The current state of and possible future sediment deposition in reservoirs have been investigated globally with the aid of the ICOLD Register on Dams. The global mean reservoir sedimentation rate was found to be 0.8 % of the original storage capacity per year. The book also investigates the impacts of dams on the ecology related to fluvial morphological changes, and guidelines are proposed to mitigate the impacts on the downstream river morphology. Finally an economical model is presented which considers a life cycle approach for reservoir conservation.

Book Laying the Foundations

  • Author : Marcus J. Wishart

Download or read book Laying the Foundations written by Marcus J. Wishart and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dam safety is central to public protection and economic security. However, the world has an aging portfolio of large dams, with growing downstream populations and rapid urbanization placing dual pressures on these important infrastructures to provide increased services and to do it more safely. To meet the challenge, countries need legal and institutional frameworks that are fit for purpose and can ensure the safety of dams. Such frameworks enable dams to provide water supplies to meet domestic and industrial demands, support power generation, improve food security, and bolster resilience to floods and droughts, helping to build safer communities. Laying the Foundations: A Global Analysis of Regulatory Frameworks for the Safety of Dams and Downstream Communities is a systematic review of dam regimes from a diverse set of 51 countries with varying economic, political, and cultural circumstances. These case studies inform a continuum of legal, institutional, technical, and financial options for sustainable dam safety assurance. The findings from the comparative analysis will inform decisionmakers about the merits of different options for dam safety and help them systematically develop the most effective approaches for the country context. By identifying the essential elements of good practices guided by portfolio characteristics, this tool can help identify gaps in existing legal, institutional, technical, and financial frameworks to enhance the regulatory regime for ensuring the safety of dams and downstream communities.
