Book Machineries of Oil

Download or read book Machineries of Oil written by Katayoun Shafiee and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of the international oil corporation as a political actor in the twentieth century, seen in BP's infrastructure and information arrangements in Iran. In the early twentieth century, international oil corporations emerged as a new kind of political actor. The development of the world oil industry, argues Katayoun Shafiee, was one of the era's largest political projects of techno-economic development. In this book, Shafiee maps the machinery of oil operations in the Anglo-Iranian oil industry between 1901 and 1954, tracking the organizational work involved in moving oil through a variety of technical, legal, scientific, and administrative networks. She shows that, in a series of disagreements, the British-controlled Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC, which later became BP) relied on various forms of information management to transform political disputes into techno-economic calculation, guaranteeing the company complete control over profits, labor, and production regimes. She argues that the building of alliances and connections that constituted Anglo-Iranian oil's infrastructure reconfigured local politics of oil regions and examines how these arrangements in turn shaped the emergence of both nation-state and transnational oil corporation. Drawing on her extensive archival and field research in Iran, Shafiee investigates the surprising ways in which nature, technology, and politics came together in battles over mineral rights; standardizing petroleum expertise; formulas for calculating profits, production rates, and labor; the “Persianization” of employees; nationalism and oil nationalization; and the long-distance machinery of an international corporation. Her account shows that the politics of oil cannot be understood in isolation from its technical dimensions. Book Finders Keepers

  • Author : Terence Daintith
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-09-23
  • ISBN : 1136522832
  • Pages : 522 pages

Download or read book Finders Keepers written by Terence Daintith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginnings of the oil industry, production activity has been governed by the 'law of capture,' dictating that one owns the oil recovered from one's property even if it has migrated from under neighboring land. This 'finders keepers' principle has been excoriated by foreign critics as a 'law of the jungle' and identified by American commentators as the root cause of the enormous waste of oil and gas resulting from US production methods in the first half of the twentieth century. Yet while in almost every other country the law of capture is today of marginal significance, it continues in full vigour in the United States, with potentially wasteful results. In this richly documented account, Terence Daintith adopts a historical and comparative perspective to show how legal rules, technical knowledge (or the lack of it) and political ideas combined to shape attitudes and behavior in the business of oil production, leading to the original adoption of the law of capture, its consolidation in the United States, and its marginalization elsewhere.

Book Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Laws

Download or read book Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Laws written by Usman, Adamu Kyuka and published by Malthouse Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though predominantly on oil and gas law, this is nonetheless a veritable Reference Book on the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. It places before anyone interested in the oil and gas industry basic and critical oil and gas issues not in common circulation in existing texts on the subject. The book is arranged in such a chronological order, like reference books and dictionaries tend to be,that a lay person in going through it would now know how oil is explored and found, how oil fields may be onshore and offshore, how oil blocs are bidded for, how oil is drilled, including associated gas deposits, among others. The transportation of oil and gas, storage of oil and gas, refining of oil and processing of gas, marketing of oil and gas,the impact of oil and gas exploration, production and revenues on the Nigerian environment, politics and economy and a myriad of other issues are comprehensively covered. The book should prove most useful to the lawyer, petroleum geologist, petroleum engineer, policy makers, investors, local and international development agencies and bodies, lecturers and students specialising in wide ranging subjects as economics, development studies, engineering, management, public administration, insurance, marketing, accounting and finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consolidates the many different chemistries being employed to provide environmentally acceptable products through the upstream oil and gas industry This book discusses the development and application of green chemistry in the oil and gas exploration and production industry over the last 25 years — bringing together the various chemistries that are utilised for creating suitable environmental products. Written by a highly respected consultant to the oil and gas industry — it introduces readers to the principles and development of green chemistry in general, and the regulatory framework specific to the oil and gas sector in the North Sea area and elsewhere in the world. It also explores economic drivers pertaining to the application of green chemistry in the sector. Topics covered in Oilfield Chemistry and its Environmental Impact include polymer chemistry, surfactants and amphiphiles, phosphorus chemistry, inorganic salts, low molecular weight organics, silicon chemistry and green solvents. It also looks at sustainability in an extractive industry, examining the approaches used and the other methodologies that could be applied in the development of better chemistries, along with discussions about where the application of green chemistry is leading in this industry sector. Provides the reader with a ready source of reference when considering what chemistries are appropriate for application to oilfield problems and looking for green chemistry solutions Brings together the pertinent regulations which workers in the field will find useful, alongside the chemistries which meet the regulatory requirements Written by a well-known specialist with a combined knowledge of chemistry, manufacturing procedures and environmental issues Oilfield Chemistry and its Environmental Impact is an excellent book for oil and gas industry professionals as well as scientists, academic researchers, students and policy makers.
