Book Workshops in Bile Acid Research

Download or read book Workshops in Bile Acid Research written by L. Barbara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 7th International Bile Acid meeting held in Cortina d'Ampezzo. , Italy, during March 1982, there were two important Workshops dealing with recent advances in two areas of bile acid metabolism - Serum Bile Acids i,n Health and Disease and The Pathophysiology of the Enterohepatic Circulation. These Workshops complemented the broad range of topics in bile acid metabolism which were presented formally as part of a Postgraduate Course. The proceedings of these formal presentations have already been pub lished by MTP Press under the title Bile Acids in Gastroenterology but in view of the exciting, important, new information which emerged during both Workshops, the organisers of the meeting felt that it would be valuable to record and edit the proceedings of the Work shops, which form the basis of this volume. The advent of new techniques for measurement of total and indi vidual bile acids in serum now means that accurate and reliable 7 PREFACE measurements of bile acids in peripheral circulation are available to all. This has resulted in a veritable explosion of information in the serum bile acid field and, therefore, the appearance of a critical evalu ation of the technical and basic scientific and clinical aspects of measuring serum bile acids is indeed timely.

Those colleagues from time to time at International Meetings which are often held in attractive parts of the world. The 7th International Symposium on bile acids 'Bile Acids in Gastroenterology' was no exception. It took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the heart of the Italian Dolomites, from 17th-20th March 1982. This meeting was organised by a Scientific Committee, with representatives from Italy, the United States and Great Britain, in collaboration with the Italian Society of Gastroenterology. The format of the meeting was somewhat different from that of previous years. In addition to the free communications (verbal and poster presentations) which characte rise many scientific meetings, there was also an Advanced Postgraduate Course on bile acids given by a distinguished international panel of experts. Their contributions form the basis for this timely volume which should be of interest both to basic scientists and to clinical investigators alike. The editors are indebted to Dr Gian Germano Giuliani, Gipharmex SpA, Milano, whose generous support made the meeting possible. They also thank Mr P. M. Lister, Managing Editor, MTP Press Limited and Mrs Veronica Cesari, Italian Society of Gastroenterology for help with the publication of these proceedings. R. Download or read book Bile Acids in Liver Diseases written by G. Paumgartner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-12-31 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bile acid research has attracted increasing attention from both basic scientists and clinical hepatologists over the last decade. Experimental studies have expanded our knowledge of the role of bile acids in liver disease, and well-designed clinical trials have documented beneficial effects of bile acid treatment for a number of hepatobiliary diseases. Bile Acids in Liver Diseases, the proceedings of an International Falk Workshop held in Munich, January 1995, provides insights into current concepts in bile acid chemistry, bile acid synthesis and metabolism, and transport of bile acids across the hepatocyte. The role of bile acids in bile formation, cholestasis and hepatotoxicity are discussed. Finally, the book addresses experimental studies and hypotheses about the putative mechanisms of action of ursodeoxycholic acid in cholestatic liver diseases, and summarizes the clinical applications of bile acid treatment on the basis of controlled clinical trials.

Book The Bile Acids Chemistry Physiology and Metabolism

Download or read book The Bile Acids Chemistry Physiology and Metabolism written by K.D.R. Setchell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a decade has elapsed since the last volume in this series was published. At that time we considered that we had comprehensively covered all aspects relating to bile acid chemistry and physiology. However, major strides have been made in our understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of bile acids, due largely to the great advances which have taken place in analytical technology. As a result, the need to document these advances was felt acutely, and therefore this volume is devoted to methodologies in bile acid analysis and their applications. This volume includes twelve chapters written by prominent scientists in the field of bile acid research. The initial chapter discusses techniques of extraction and isolation of bile acids from biological fluids. It is followed by descriptions of physical methods of analysis and discussions of the way these techniques have been applied in the field of bile acid research. Of practical value is the inclusion of a comprehensive list of spectra obtained for refer ences by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry . These chapters are followed by reviews of biological methods of immuno assay and bioluminescence. Specific applications of these techniques are then addressed in contributions relating to bile acid analysis of tissue, serum, urine, and feces. With this integrated approach we have attempted to provide a volume which represents a comprehensive review of the analytical field of bile acids, while also serving as a useful reference book for those workers involved in bile acid analysis.

Leading world experts attempt to define its mechanism of action, and the current role of other non-surgical treatments in biliary disease. The physiology and pathogenesis of cholestatic and alcoholic liver disease and cholesterol gallstone disease is also examined.

Book Bile Acid Biology and its Therapeutic Implications

Download or read book Bile Acid Biology and its Therapeutic Implications written by G. Paumgartner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-03-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of the 18th International Bile Acid Meeting, held as the Falk Symposium 141 in Stockholm, Sweden, on June 18–19, 2004. The International Bile Acid Meetings have become some of the most important meetings in the bile acid field worldwide since Herbert Falk decided to sponsor these Symposia in biannual sequence in 1970. The 17 International Bile Acid Meetings in the past have been a great stimulus for new ideas and methods as well as the development of therapeutic applications of bile acids. They have always been a forum where basic scientists and clinicians interact. Many novel results of bile acid research were first presented at these meetings. The meeting in Stockholm again attracted a large number of basic and clinical scientists interested in bile acid and biliary research from all over the world. Knowledge about the regulation of bile acid synthesis, bile acid transport and enterohepatic circulation in health and in disease has increased considerably during recent years. Accordingly, bile acid research is alive as ever. A new chapter of bile acid research was opened by the finding that bile acids are ligands of nuclear receptors which regulate synthesis, metabolism and transport of bile acids and steroids. A large part of the book is devoted to these topics. The 18th International Bile Acid Meeting was again a truly interdisciplinary symposium at the highest scientific level. Its participants enjoyed hearing the latest reports on bile acid research in the city where so many seminal studies on bile acids were performed. It is hoped that the readers of this book will share the enjoyment.

Book excerpt: Bile acids are increasingly being seen as extremely important carcinogenic agents in cancers of the bile duct, liver, colon, rectum, and oesophagus. They are essential agents involved in lipid digestion and absorption in mammals, however, they also play wide-ranging roles in a variety of disease states ranging from diabetes to cancer. They have evolved exquisite mechanisms for controlling their own synthesis and to ensure that they are produced at correct concentrations and also kept in the correct anatomical environment. It is only when these fine levels of controls are breached that Bile aci.

Book Bile Acids and Pregnancy

  • Author : U. Leuschner
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2002-12-31
  • ISBN : 9780792387824
  • Pages : 106 pages

Download or read book Bile Acids and Pregnancy written by U. Leuschner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-12-31 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pregnancy represents an allograft in so far that half of the antigens are foreign to the mother. Therefore, a bidirectional interaction between the maternal and the fetal immune systems must exist, which could be disturbed by preexisting autoimmune liver diseases. Since nowadays autoimmune liver diseases are increasingly detected as early stage diseases due to modern diagnostic procedures, e.g. in women of childbearing age, and since the number of posttransplant pregnancies has become an issue due to improved survival, questions concerning regnancy, autoimmune liver disease and treatment options with bile acids and/or immunosuppressants are of an ever-increasing interest. This book, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop held in Freiburg, Germany, on June 2, 2002, is certainly unable to give any definite answers to any of the hundreds of still remaining questions in this fascinating field, but hopefully it will help to stimulate and initiate cooperation among immunologists, bile acid researchers, gynaecologists and internists.
