Book excerpt: Workshop Calculus: Guided Exploration with Review integrates a review of basic pre-calculus concepts with the study of concepts encountered in a traditional first semester calculus course - functions, limits, derivatives, integrals, and an introduction to integration techniques. This two-course sequence is designed for students who are not prepared to enter Calculus I, but who need to develop mathematical skills for further study in the social sciences, natural sciences, or mathematics. The primary goal of the course is to help students develop firm conceptual understandings of the fundamental ideas in calculus, thereby enabling them to use calculus in other disciplines. Essential elements of Workshop Calculus include the emphasis on applications to enhance student motivation and the use of computers amd graphing calculators to help explore mathematical ideas.

Book Calculus I with Precalculus A One Year Course

Download or read book Calculus I with Precalculus A One Year Course written by Ron Larson and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2008-06-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carefully developed for one-year courses that combine and integrate material from Precalculus through Calculus I, this text is ideal for instructors who wish to successfully bring students up to speed algebraically within precalculus and transition them into calculus. The Larson Calculus texts continue to offer instructors and students new and innovative teaching and learning resources. The Calculus series was the first to use computer-generated graphics, to include exercises involving the use of computers and graphing calculators, to be available in an interactive CD-ROM format, to be offered as a complete, online calculus course, and to offer this two-semester Calculus I with Precalculus text. Every edition of the series has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. Two primary objectives guided the authors in writing this book: to develop precise, readable materials for students that clearly define and demonstrate concepts and rules of calculus and to design comprehensive teaching resources for instructors that employ proven pedagogical techniques and saves the instructor time. Book Making the Connection

Download or read book Making the Connection written by Marilyn Paula Carlson and published by MAA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume convey insights from mathematics education research that have direct implications for anyone interested in improving teaching and learning in undergraduate mathematics. This synthesis of research on learning and teaching mathematics provides relevant information for any math department or individual faculty member who is working to improve introductory proof courses, the longitudinal coherence of precalculus through differential equations, students' mathematical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and students' understanding of fundamental ideas such as variable and rate of change. Other chapters include information about programs that have been successful in supporting students' continued study of mathematics. The authors provide many examples and ideas to help the reader infuse the knowledge from mathematics education research into mathematics teaching practice. University mathematicians and community college faculty spend much of their time engaged in work to improve their teaching. Frequently, they are left to their own experiences and informal conversations with colleagues to develop new approaches to support student learning and their continuation in mathematics. Over the past 30 years, research in undergraduate mathematics education has produced knowledge about the development of mathematical understandings and models for supporting students' mathematical learning. Currently, very little of this knowledge is affecting teaching practice. We hope that this volume will open a meaningful dialogue between researchers and practitioners toward the goal of realizing improvements in undergraduate mathematics curriculum and instruction.

Book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning

Download or read book Transformational Change Efforts Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning written by Wendy M. Smith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this handbook is to help launch institutional transformations in mathematics departments to improve student success. We report findings from the Student Engagement in Mathematics through an Institutional Network for Active Learning (SEMINAL) study. SEMINAL's purpose is to help change agents, those looking to (or currently attempting to) enact change within mathematics departments and beyond—trying to reform the instruction of their lower division mathematics courses in order to promote high achievement for all students. SEMINAL specifically studies the change mechanisms that allow postsecondary institutions to incorporate and sustain active learning in Precalculus to Calculus 2 learning environments. Out of the approximately 2.5 million students enrolled in collegiate mathematics courses each year, over 90% are enrolled in Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses. Forty-four percent of mathematics departments think active learning mathematics strategies are important for Precalculus to Calculus 2 courses, but only 15 percnt state that they are very successful at implementing them. Therefore, insights into the following research question will help with institutional transformations: What conditions, strategies, interventions and actions at the departmental and classroom levels contribute to the initiation, implementation, and institutional sustainability of active learning in the undergraduate calculus sequence (Precalculus to Calculus 2) across varied institutions?

Book Mathematicians and Education Reform 1989 1990

Download or read book Mathematicians and Education Reform 1989 1990 written by Naomi Fisher and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational issues are receiving a great deal of attention in the mathematical sciences community, as concern rises over the quality of instruction in the nation's schools, colleges, and universities. Insuring a mathematically literate population and increasing the number of students pursuing careers in mathematics, science and engineering are high on the list of priorities. Mathematicians can make important contributions to the educational reform process. The present volume is the second in the series Issues in Mathematics Education, launched in 1990 by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences and published by the AMS and the Mathematical Association of America. The purpose of the series is to stimulate the flow of information among mathematical scientists, education specialists, and teachers, about innovative efforts to revitalize mathematics education. Compiled and edited by the directors of the Mathematicians and Education Reform (MER) Network, this book contains papers by speakers and participants in MER workshops and special sessions over the last three years. Like the first volume, which also grew out of an MER workshop, this book is organized into two sections, Projects and Issues and Reactions, providing a balance between descriptions of successful existing projects and more in-depth discussion of problems and issues in mathematics education reform. With contributions by some of the major leaders in this area today, this book will likely be of interest to a broad segment of the mathematical sciences community.

Download or read book Bold Ventures written by S. Raizen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents comprehensive results from case studies of three innovations in mathematics education that have much to offer toward understanding current reforms in this field. Each chapter tells the story of a case in rich detail, with extensi ve documentation, and in the voices of many of the participants-the innovators, the teachers, the students. Similarly, Volume 2 of Bold Ventures pre sents the results from case studies of five innovations in science education. Volume 1 provides a cross-case analysis of all eight innovations. Many U.S. readers certainly will be very familiar with the name of at least if not all of the mathematics innovations discussed in this volume-for one example, the NCTM Standards-and probably with their general substance. Much of the education community's familiarity with these" arises from the pro jects' own dissemination efforts. The research reported in this volume, however, is one of the few detailed studies of these innovations undertaken by researchers outside the projects themselves.
