Book Byzantium and the Early Islamic Conquests

Download or read book Byzantium and the Early Islamic Conquests written by Walter E. Kaegi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-03-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of how and why the Byzantine Empire lost many of its most valuable provinces to Islamic (Arab) conquerors in the seventh century, provinces which included Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia, and Armenia. It investigates conditions on the eve of those conquests, mistakes in Byzantine policy toward the Arabs, the course of the military campaigns, and the problem of local official and civilian collaboration with the Muslims. It also seeks to explain how, after terrible losses, the Byzantine government achieved some intellectual rationalisation of its disasters and began the complex process of transforming and adapting its fiscal and military institutions and political controls in order to prevent further disintegration.

Book Black Diamonds

  • Pages : 478 pages

Download or read book Black Diamonds written by Mór Jókai and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1896 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are in the depths of an underground cavern. It is bad enough to be underground, but here we are all enveloped in black as well: the ceiling is black, so are the walls; they are made of blocks of coal. The floor is one great black looking-glass. It is a sort of pond, polished as steel. Over this polished surface glistens the reflection of a solitary light, the light of a safety-lamp shining through a wire net. A man guides himself over the pond in a narrow boat. By the doubtful light of the lamp he sees high pillars, which rise out of the depths below and reach to the very roof of the cavern-pillars slender, like the columns of a Moorish palace. These pillars are half white and half black; up to a certain point only are they coal black, beyond that they are light in color. What are these pillars?

Book The Nameless Castle Dodo Press

Download or read book The Nameless Castle Dodo Press written by Maurus Jokai and published by . This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mor Jokai, born Moric Jokay (1825-1904), outside Hungary also known as Maurus Jokai, was a Hungarian dramatist and novelist. On the re-establishment of the Hungarian constitution by the Composition of 1867, he took an active part in politics. As a constant supporter of the Tisza administration, not only in parliament, where he sat continuously for more than twenty years, but also as the editor of the government organ, Hon, founded by him in 1863, he became a power in the state, and, though he never took office himself, frequently extricated the government from difficult places. He was an archromantic, with an almost Oriental imagination, and humour of the purest, rarest description. He continued to devote most of his time to literature, and his productiveness after 1870 was stupendous, amounting to some hundreds of volumes. Stranger still, none of this work is slipshod, and the best of it deserves to endure. His works include: Dr. Dumany's Wife (1891), The Nameless Castle (1896), The Poor Plutocrats (1899), Halil the Pedlar: A Tale of Old Stambul (1901) and Manasseh: A Romance of Transylvania (1901).
