Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New England colonial pastor and theologian Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) was well aware of the threat that Deist philosophy posed to the unity of the Bible as Christian Scriptures, yet remarkably, his own theology of the Bible has never before been examined. In the context of his entire corpus this study pays particular attention to the detailed notes Edwards left for "The Harmony of the Old and New Testament," a "great work" hitherto largely ignored by scholars. Following examination of his "Harmony" notes, a case study of salvation in the Old Testament challenges the current "dispositional" account of Edwards's soteriology and argues instead that the colonial Reformed theologian held there to be one object of saving faith in Old and New Testaments, namely, Christ.

Book excerpt: Throughout his adult life Jonathan Edwards kept a series of personal theological notebooks on a wide variety of miscellaneous subjects. This volume includes the notebook entries written during the eventful and tumultuous years 1740-1751, when Edwards was plagued by a series of bitter controversies with his Northampton congregation that culminated in his dismissal. This was also the period during which he witnessed, documented, and pondered the surprising revivals of the Great Awakening, as well as their precipitous decline.

Book The Federal Theology of Jonathan Edwards

Download or read book The Federal Theology of Jonathan Edwards written by Gilsun Ryu and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christ-centered exegesis of Jonathan Edwards Jonathan Edwards is remembered for his sermons and works of theology and philosophy--but he has been overlooked as an exegete. Gilsun Ryu's The Federal Theology of Jonathan Edwards explores how exegesis drove Edwards's focus on the headship of Christ as second Adam--and likewise formed a foundation for his broader theological reasoning and writing, especially on Christ and the covenants. Edwards's distinctive emphases on exegesis, redemptive history, and the harmony of Scripture distinguish him from his Reformed forebears. Ryu's study will help readers appreciate Edwards's contribution as an exegetically informed Reformed theologian.

Book Jonathan Edwards and Scripture

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards and Scripture written by David P. Barshinger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long, scholars have published new research on Edwards without paying due attention to the work he took most seriously: biblical exegesis. Edwards is recognized as an innovative theologian who wielded tremendous influence on revivalism, evangelicalism, and New England theology. What is often missed is how much time he devoted to studying and understanding the Bible. He kept voluminous notebooks on Scripture and died with unrealized plans for major treatises on the Bible. More and more experts now recognize the importance of this aspect of his life; this book brings together the insights of leading Edwards scholars on this topic. The essays in Jonathan Edwards and Scripture set Edwards' engagement with Scripture in the context of seventeenth-century Protestant exegesis and eighteenth-century colonial interpretation. They provide case studies of Edwards' exegesis in varying genres of the Bible and probe his use of Scripture to develop theology. The authors also set his biblical interpretation in perspective by comparing it with that of other exegetes. This book advances our understanding of the nature and significance of Edwards' work with Scripture and opens new lines of inquiry for students of early modern Western history.

Book Jonathan Edwards and the Psalms

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards and the Psalms written by David P. Barshinger and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Jonathan Edwards studies is only beginning to wrestle with his vast corpus of writings on the Bible, and David Barshinger addresses this gap by providing a close study of his engagement with the book of Psalms. Barshinger explores materials that have received little attention to date, including Edwards's notebooks on the Bible and dozens of handwritten sermon manuscripts. Barshinger shows that Edwards approached the Psalms not merely from a typological or Christological viewpoint, but that the history of redemption provided the theological framework within which he interpreted, preached, and sang the Psalms. At a time of increasing attacks on the Bible, Edwards appropriated the book of Psalms as a divinely inspired anchor to proclaim the gospel. In his reading of the Psalms Edwards treated various theological themes, including God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, revelation, humanity, sin, the gospel, Christian piety, the church corporate, and the eternal dwellings of all people, connecting all of these themes through the redemptive-historical framework that guided his vision of the Bible.

Book Jonathan Edwards and Justification by Faith

Download or read book Jonathan Edwards and Justification by Faith written by Michael McClenahan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is widely regarded as North America's most influential theologian. Throughout the early decades of his ministry he engaged in a public and sustained debate with 'Arminian' theology, a crusade that contributed significantly to the events of the Great Awakening. This book investigates the contours and substance of this theological war. In establishing a clearer historical context for this polemic, McClenahan seeks to overturn the scholarly consensus that Edwards' own theology was a twisting of the Reformed tradition. By demonstrating that Edwards' interlocutor was the dead English Archbishop, John Tillotson, McClenahan provides the hermeneutical key for many of Edwards' most significant works. Justification by faith is one of the most contested doctrines in contemporary theology and Jonathan Edwards, referred to as America's Augustine, wrote extensively on this area. His is a voice that many people are keen to hear.
