This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prospectus of the Literary Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft Mr Bancroft was born at Granville, Ohio, in 1832. His parents were from New England, and he was early trained in all the stern doctrines of the Puritans. Working on the farm during summer, and attending school in winter, the time passed by, until in his sixteenth year he went to Buffalo, and entered the store of a bookseller. There he remained four years, until 1852, when he was sent by his employer to open a bookstore in California. The death of his patron disconcerted his plans, and it was not until 1856 that the business was begun on Montgomery street, in San Francisco. Though extremely fond of books, he was a diligent man of business, and applied himself early and late to place his establishment in the first rank on the Pacific Coast. His habits of industry never left him, and when he entered the field of letters, he carried with him not only the pecuniary means essential to the achievement of great results, but those common-sense views which spring from practical business experience, and which literary men so often lack. Book Literary Industries

Download or read book Literary Industries written by Hubert Howe Bancroft and published by Heyday.ORIM. This book was released on 2013-12-09 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An autobiography of the bookseller, library collector, man of letters, and historian of the American West edited by his great-great granddaughter. A bookseller in San Francisco during the gold rush, Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832–1918) rose to become the man who would define the early history of California and the West. Creating what he called a “history factory,” he assembled a vast library of over sixty thousand books, maps, letters, and documents; hired scribes to copy material in private hands; employed interviewers to capture the memories of early Spanish and Mexican settlers; and published multiple volumes sold throughout the country by his subscription agents. In 1890 he published an eight-hundred-page autobiography, aptly entitled Literary Industries. Literary Industries sparkles with the exuberance of nineteenth-century California and introduces us to a man of great complexity and wit. Edited for the modern reader and yet relating the history of the West as it was taking place—and as it was being recorded—Kim Bancroft’s edition of Literary Industries is a joy to read.

Book Tales of the Working Girl

Download or read book Tales of the Working Girl written by Laura Hapke and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Record numbers of women began entering the American labor force in the late 1800s, their experiences composed largely of the drudgery of the factory or the monotony of the sales floor. This feminine mass entry into the workplace sparked thirty-five years of debate, with proponents protesting employers' "moral corruption" of women and detractors arguing for a return to woman's "proper" sphere, the home - evidence of the late-Victorian desire to regulate female sexuality. Authors of fiction were quick to respond: Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, O. Henry, Theodore Dreiser, Anzia Yezierska - these and others portrayed working girls in forms as diverse as tenement tales, labor romances, and novels of upward mobility. By joining the period debate about the working girl, her literary imaginers helped shape it." "While modern treatments of labor fiction, including those by feminist scholars, have largely ignored these portrayals, Tales of the Working' Girl does not. Reevaluating both well-known and forgotten texts, this new study by Laura Hapke examines the myriad ways in which the working girl was envisioned by considering the artistic goals and strategies of those who depicted her. Hapke explores to what extent writers acknowledged women's own responses to the controversy, scrutinizes differences in male and female authors' portrayals, and traces the evolution of the working girl as fictional heroine from the slum melodramas of the 1890s to the strike fiction of the 1910s to the economic ascension novels of the 1920s." "Marked by lucid prose and graced by historical photographs and illustrations, Tales of the Working Girl is an important contribution to women's studies, American studies, and labor history."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
