Book Working with Spirit

Download or read book Working with Spirit written by Jo Thobeka Wreford and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current model of health dispensation in South Africa there are two major paradigms, the spirit-inspired tradition of izangoma sinyanga and biomedicine. These operate at best in parallel, but more often than not are at odds with one another. This book, based on the author’s personal experience as a practitioner of traditional African medicine, considers the effects of the absence of spirit in biomedicine on collaborative relationships. Given the unprecedented challenge of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country, the author suggests that more cooperation is vital. Taking a critical look at the role of anthropology in this endeavor, she proposes the development of a “language of spirit” by means of which the spirit-inspired aetiology of izangoma sinyanga may be made comprehensible to academic scientists and applicable to medical interventions. The author discusses white izangoma in the context of current debates on healing and hybridity and insists that there exists a powerful role for izangoma in the realm of societal healing. Above all, the book constitutes a start in what the author hopes will develop into an ongoing intellectual conversation between traditional African healing, academe, and biomedicine in South Africa.

Book Let Your Spirit Guides Speak

Download or read book Let Your Spirit Guides Speak written by Debra Landwehr Engle and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Live without your spirit guides and you miss out on an enormous support system that could make your life infinitely easier and more enjoyable." This is a clear and thoughtful introduction to building relationships with your spirit guides. It shows readers how helpful spirit guides and angels can be in everything from the simplest to the most challenging of life decisions and how easy they are to connect with, too. Our spirit guides help us to: Fulfill our purpose Make decisions that will move us forward faster Stop sabotaging ourselves as well as judging ourselves and everyone else Remember that we are more than our job or house or relationship See ourselves as beautiful and everything in life as a gift Give ourselves and everybody else a break Keep growing until the day we leave our bodies behind Go beyond the life we hoped for and onto the life we never even imagined And they do all of these things when we're ready and not a nanosecond before. They also often come quietly. As the author states: "If we expect help from Spirit to arrive with the sound of trumpets and blinding light, we'll overlook all the nuanced help that's delivered in small ways every day."

Download or read book Work in the Spirit written by Miroslav Volf and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-04-27 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the rise of modern industrial society, work has come to pervade and rule the lives of men and women. Although there have been many popular books and church documents on on the Christian understanding of work, this is the first scholarly effort to articulate a developed Protestant theology of work. In Work in the Spirit, Miroslav Volf interprets work from a new perspective - in terms of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He exhaustively explores the nature of work in both capitalist and socialist societies and considers a variety of work, including industrial, agricultural, medical, political, and artistic work. Examining the importance of alienation in work in industrial and information societies (particularly in the relation of workers to management and technology), he analyzes various forms of such alienation, and elucidates the character of humane work. On the basis of the ÒpneumatologicalÓ theology of work that he develops, Volf rejects the traditional Protestant understanding of work as vocation, and takes the concept of charisma as the cornerstone for his theological reflection on work. He denies that one is ÒcalledÓ to do a particular work irrespective of one's inclinations, and asserts, instead, that it is our privilege to do the kind of work for which God's spirit has gifted us. All human work done in accordance with the will of God, Volf argues, is cooperation with God in the preservation and transformation of the world.

Book The Spirit of Our Work

  • Author : Cynthia Dillard
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2021-11-16
  • ISBN : 0807013870
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book The Spirit of Our Work written by Cynthia Dillard and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of how engaging identity and cultural heritage can transform teaching and learning for Black women educators in the name of justice and freedom in the classroom In The Spirit of Our Work, Dr. Cynthia Dillard centers the spiritual lives of Black women educators and their students, arguing that spirituality has guided Black people throughout the diaspora. She demonstrates how Black women teachers and teacher educators can heal, resist, and (re)member their identities in ways that are empowering for them and their students. Dillard emphasizes that any discussion of Black teachers’ lives and work cannot be limited to truncated identities as enslaved persons in the Americas. The Spirit of Our Work addresses questions that remain largely invisible in what is known about teaching and teacher education. According to Dillard, this invisibility renders the powerful approaches to Black education that are imbodied and marshaled by Black women teachers unknown and largely unavailable to inform policy, practice, and theory in education. The Spirit of Our Work highlights how the intersectional identities of Black women teachers matter in teaching and learning and how educational settings might more carefully and conscientiously curate structures of support that pay explicit and necessary attention to spirituality as a crucial consideration.
