Book Alfred Raworth s Electric Southern Railway

Download or read book Alfred Raworth s Electric Southern Railway written by Peter Steer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Railway between 1923 and 1939 was the only British company to carry out a sustained programme of electrification which became known as the Southern Electric. Unlike many recent projects, each incremental step was completed on time and within budget. This successful project was more impressive as it was achieved during a period of economic stagnation (including the ‘great depression’) and despite government disapproval of the method of electrification. The driving force behind this endeavor was the railway’s general manager, Sir Herbert Walker, but at his side was his electrical engineer, Alfred Raworth, the man one journalist described as an ‘electrification genius’. Alfred Raworth’s career began working with his father the eminent consulting engineer and entrepreneur, John Smith Raworth. Following the collapse of his father’s business Alfred joined the railway industry and devised an ambitious and innovative electrification design. This was discarded when the railways of southern England were ‘grouped’ into the Southern Railway after which he took responsibility for the implementation of the electrification schemes. With Walker’s retirement in 1937, those who continued to support steam traction took the policy lead. A marginalised Raworth retired but was later to witness the fruition of many of his discarded ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British luxury rail travel was not just the domain of the Pullman Company. In fact, they were far from the only providers as railway companies in Britain were extremely active from late Victorian times competing for leisure business. Various railway operators were at the forefront of deluxe rail travel services across pre-grouping, Big Four and BR eras when first-class travel was increasingly adapted for the needs of the business community. Recently Britain's railway heritage has been responsible for kick-starting a modern tourist spectacle as specialist operators run luxury day excursion, sleeping-car and fine-dining trains. Martyn Pring has carried out considerable research tracing the evolution of British luxury train travel weaving railway, social and travel history threads around a number of Britain's mainline routes traditionally associated with glamorous trains. Drawing on contemporary coverage, he chronicles the luxury products and services shaped by railway companies and hospitality businesses for Britain's burgeoning upper and middle-classes and wealthy overseas visitors, particularly Americans, who demanded more civilized and comfortable rail travel. By Edwardian times, a pleasure-palace industry emerged as entrepreneurs, hotel proprietors, local authorities and railway companies all collaborated developing upscale destinations, building civic amenities, creating sightseeing and leisure pursuits and in place-making initiatives to attract prosperous patrons. Luxury named trains delivered sophisticated and fashionable settings encouraging a golden age of civilized business and leisure travel. Harkening back to the inter-war years, modern luxury train operators now redefine and capture the allure and excitement of dining and train travel experiences.

Download or read book Lost Railways of Devon written by Stan Yorke and published by Countryside Books (GB). This book was released on 2007 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devon's railway history began when the main line from London reached Exeter in 1844. Links were soon built with Plymouth in 1848 and Barnstaple in 1854. On top of this, in the heyday of railway age, Devon also boasted over 400 miles of branch lines and sidings - nearly all of them to disappear by the end of the 20th century. At a time when horse-drawn coaches and farm carts were the only alternative, the railways transported people and goods to their destinations much more quickly. Sadly, the good times were not to last and by the 1930s competition from road transport led to closures which continued into the 1960s when the Beeching Act finished off all but the main lines. Todaytwo preservation societies, the Plym Valley Railway and the Dart Valley Railway, are keeping the county's railway history alive. In this excellently written and well researched book, author Stan Yorke tells the story of the lost lines - the reason for their construction and for their closure. Modern otographs accompany those taken when Devon's lines were open and bustling. Due in 8th October
