Sir John did it gracefully and read books, though he said that books were foolishness, and that he would never have read them if he hadn't been married. He had married at forty. During the first forty years of his life ht. Had read next to nothing, and knew more about men and womenthan any one he ever came across. He even knew Lady Bexley. Therefore she had her own way. Jack never went to school; and, by the time he had worn twenty tutors to rags, and thrown one into the biggest pond they ha'd at Charteris, every one said he would go straight to the devil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idler, Vol. 6 T was far indeed from being my first book, for I am not a novelist alone. But I am well aware that my paymaster, the Great Public, regards what else I have written with indifference, if not aversion; if it call upon me at all, it calls on me in the familiar and indelible character; and when I am asked to talk of my first book, no question in the world but what is meant is my first novel. Sooner or later, somehow, anyhow, I was bound to write a novel. It seems vain to ask why. Men are born with various manias: from my earliest childhood, it 'was mine to make a plaything of imaginary series of events; anid'as soon as I was able to write, I became a good friend to the pa er-makers. Reams upon reams must have gone to the making' of Rathillet, The Pentland Rising, The King's Pardon (otherwisey'ark Whitehead), Edward Driven, A Country Dance, and A Vendetta in the W'est; and it is consolatory to remember that these reams are now all ashes, and have been received again into the soil. I have named but a few of my ill-fated efi'orts, only such indeed as came to a fair bulk ere they were desisted f'om; and even so they cover a long vista of years. Rathillet was attempted before fifteen, The Vendetta at twenty-nine, and the succession of defeats lasted unbroken till I was thirty-one. By that time, I had written little books and little essays and short stories; and had got patted on the back and paid for them - though not enough to live upon. I had quite a reputation, I was the successful man; I passed my days in toil, the futility of which would sometimes make my cheek to burn that I should spend a man's energy upon this business, and yet could not earn a livelihood: and still there shone ahead of me an unattained ideal although I had attempted the thing with vigour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idler, 1898, Vol. 13 One afternoon I rode out as usual, anticipating no more eventful a gallop than my usual daily excursion. I had not awaked that morning with any conscious ness or presentiment that this day would be a remarkable and memorable one in my life; it began like any other sum mer morning, in radiance of light and the singing of birds and in a million perfumes that burdened the soft air of June, but my heart was neither gladder nor less joyful than usual, and there was nothing to show me that this day was the greatest of all days for me: a day, indeed, from which I was destined to date all things from this time forward the real beginning of my existence, the red-letter day Of my life, upon which I first beheld my Douglas. I rode out, I say, as usual, taking one of my favourite roads, that which lay through the forest towards Hundeluft; and I had ridden a few miles when my pony Fritz suddenly did that for which he has felt remorse and shame ever since, as I firmly believe, though indeed I have thoroughly forgiven him, and thank the Lord daily for his fault. He shied madly across the road, brushed me up against a dense thorn-bush. Which caught my dress and pulled me out of the saddle, and him self rushed away at full gallop. The cause Of his sudden alarm was a great boar, which had appeared round the corner of the briar-bush, just as we approached it, but which, most fortunately, must have been at least as much startled as poor Fritz himself, for it instantly turned and fled squeaking and grunting in the Opposite direction, and was seen and heard no more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rambles of an Idler Speak the word idleness as harshly as you may, still it falls softly On the ear. Whisper work in your most dulcet tones and Still it is harsh. Idleness has its merit, therefore, but what Of its significance? Its persistently claimed pur port has been preached down so vigorously, that he is over - bold who would invite it to look up. It is true, nevertheless, that the average man labors that he may not labor. He looks to an earned idleness as his just reward. Why, in deed, should he not? It is a favorite, but not demonstrable doc trine, that idleness once attained, mischief follows. If so, one might well ask the value, to its possessor, of an average life. Then, too. Download or read book The Idler in Italy and Confessions of an Elderly Gentleman Classic Reprint written by Marguerite Blessington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idler in Italy and Confessions of an Elderly Gentleman The Lady of Loretto, like most other fine ladies, has had a vast expenditure assigned for her servitors, though she herself partakes of none of the good things provided. Her treasury, her cellar, and her spicery, like theirs, would indicate the physical wants of a mundane personage and the ample pro vision of these luxuries proves that she, no more than earthly women, is thought to be exempt from a partiality to them. What a coarse and vulgar notion to entertain of the pure and holy Madonna, that fair ideal of all that is most exquisite, is it, to believe her propitiated by jewels, fine clothes, gold lamps, spices, and rare wines?
